Apparently I'm the only person that doesn't hate the trade😆
We get a younger defenseman with a lower AAV that's coming off a career year, meanwhile Petry's coming off his worst season since he hit his 30's. Not to mention he was absolutely brutal to watch the majority of the year.
So what is the justification for giving them Poehling? He’s gonna be a 20+ goal scorer, we could have made a power forward winger out of him.

I still don't understand why not retain 50% at this point. I understand they wanted a vet but they could just have signed a cheap 1 for a year.

Now get Dubois to replace Petry toxicity back.

The only good news is that Matheson is beyond worse than Petry and will help for the tank.

Poehling is a nothing piece I won't worry much about that loss.

petry for matheson is bad though. Unless they think playing in his hometown will help Matheson reach another level.
I think they're bracing for a Edmundson trade in the next year

Petry was on the verge of being untradeable. His age and caphit made him a dangerous asset to hold onto.

Glad we got rid of that.

Matheson is more easily dealt with. Maybe he will surprise, maybe he won’t and will continue being a 2nd pairing guy, but he won’t be as much of declining asset when it comes time to trade.

I don’t love the trade but you have to keep in mind Petry’s age, awful season, and cap hit for three more years.

MAGA asshat Poehling is the sweetener necessary to push this over the edge. Petry had next to no trade value.

This trade isn't nearly as bad as people are portraying, nor is it really any good. It's some cap savings with both Petry and Poehling gone and a warm veteran body who can play acceptably. A bleh trade that was needed. It only becomes awful if you were still holding out hopes of a 1st+ for Petry in this market.
My guess is Poehling probably moved the draft pick up slightly instead of waiving him and losing him for nothing.

The way Petry played last year and the way he was going to likely play this year if forced to play here... Matheson will be an upgrade.

Why people upset over this ? Petry 34 and mike is 28. Mike is great skater ! He from Montreal and won’t demand a trade like the American petry.

Mike is good player guys. I always liked him , we did good
We’re pissed about Poehling, we don’t care about Petry.

Remembering what Pacioretty and Burns got traded for makes this deal look a but better.

Worst case (and most likely) scenario is this helps the tank so. Can live with it but not a good look.

They must be very low on poehling...

Matheson for Petry 1:1 is a good deal for both sides imo, but Poehling I would've thought worth more than a (likely to be late) 4th...

I bet Petry puts up monster numbers this year with the pens. That's a great landing spot for him.

I mean Matheson is not Petry, but I like him and Habs are rebuilding. Happy they found a good fit and also happy they traded Poehling who I think would have trouble making the team next year and needed to be re-signed
