Confirmed with Link: [PIT/MTL] Jeff Petry and Ryan Poehling for Mike Matheson and 4th PIT 2023

Lest we forget, Petry gave up UFA in 2015 to sign w Habs because his wife fell in love w Mtl, and again signed an extension because wife & kids were very happy in Mtl.

Shouldn’t be lost w all the noise…
I cannot emphasize this strongly enough.

Before last season, Petry's family and their immersion in the community was pretty much what you should hope for with every good player that's signing here.

The treatment they've got in return last season was not only despicable, but also asinine from long-term perspective.

Dvorak is already gone IMO

Hughes, when asked about why he agreed to include Poehling in the deal: «We feel pretty confident down the middle with Suzuki, Dach and Jake Evans»..

Dvorak will not start the season in MTL..
I didn't watch the presser, but everyone who repeated what Hughes said put Dvorak into the list of centers.

Not at all what he said. He said with the acquisition of Kirby Dach and with already having Suzuki, Dvorak and Jake Evans.

It is right there at 8:50

The major risk in this trade is that Poehling finally figures it out in Pittsburgh, but, eh, shit happens. Even if he does make something of himself, I don't expect him to become anything that you can't find on free agency.
Maybe the trade wouldn’t have happened without Poehling? Team culture appears to be important to Hughes and clearly, he wasn’t willing to wait to get a better return on Petry by starting the season with him.

Poehling is an enigma. Has interesting tools but doesn’t often show them. When a guy needs too much prodding, never a good sign. Sad to see another 1st rounder sent off but there are players with a bigger motor and faster waiting in the wings and one of them will be ready to take his place.

It's pretty eerie how quickly and ruthlessly HuGo have dismantled the Bergevin-image Habs

While Bergevin rode his predecessor's players for as long as possible.

Goes to show who was left the more useful inheritance
Indeed, Hughes didn't quite inherit the same base as Bergevin did.

Bergevin had a much better built team with lots of good players when he started + some young ones. Hughes started with a badly build team with overpaid players and a few very young promising players.

Before last season nobody knew his wife was a conspiracy nut.

I think Hughes was worried Petry would be unhappy.

While I was hoping to get good futures for Petry, clearly the market isn't there right now. So either you hang on to Petry, or you trade him for someone that hopefully brings in futures when the market is right, and who is happy here in the meantime. Hopefully Matheson is that guy.

The more I look into Matheson, the more I'm content. I was looking for cap relief but Hughes was looking for a NHL body with experience.

Matheson is basically where Petry was at age 28. Similar body size, skating, and mobility. Hughes don't want to expose the young D so you can't fault him for this move too much.

Matheson can play the right side.

But here is what Hughes said about trading Petry:

1 - He doesn't want to retain in the trade. Check.
2 - He said if he does trade Petry, he'll bring in a vet D to take up those minutes. He ended up doing it in the same deal. Check.

This doesn't block the young D because as Hughes has said:

3 - He doesn't want to put his young D in roles they're not ready for. So this way, it allows the Habs to be patient with their young D and they will grow into those roles and will eventually replace the guys there now. Some sooner than others.

It makes logical sense in the end. Matheson is a NHL body who is just reaching full maturity and he can move the puck and also shoot it. Not going to turn the needle defensively so I guess that works for the tank and also helps us at exposing the younger guys in a 20+ min role.

I don't think Poehling is worth more than a 4th - he's no longer waiver exempt next year and he was unlikely to make the Habs out of camp.

He's a NHL 4th line forward and if he has that modest growth, he might turn into a decent bottom 6F. That's worth more than a 4th but you can't force his value onto someone else.

Pens were trading someone who looks like Petry did at the age of 28 so there is a 6 year age gap. They requested Poehling in the deal and I'm sure Hughes tried to get something better than a 4th added on but they didn't budge. With the cap space in the NHL, we had little leverage to hold out for a better deal.

Agreed. I don't follow defensemen much unless they appear capable of 50+ points so I knew nothing about Matheson. I would have cheered if Ty Smith was the d acquired and I would likely have been wrong because according to Devils fans he can't skate but Matheson is apparently a very good skater.

This thread is hilarious. Before the trade most were thinking Habs would eat salary, take on bad players or give premium pick/prospect to move Petry.

10 minutes later, move Petry for a younger, top 4 D, from Montreal who’s a PMD coming off his best year and this is the worst trade in the world, ever. Were you all expecting to get Makar back in the trade? Lol.

Never stop HF boards. Never stop.
I mean, many poster put the bar whey to high and thought we where getting a 1st + prospect for Petry. Normal they are disappointed after...
