Confirmed with Link: [PIT/MTL] Jeff Petry and Ryan Poehling for Mike Matheson and 4th PIT 2023

Poehling did get shifts with Suzuki and Caufield and the results weren't conclusive enough to warrant making that a line.

Also, that wasn't HuGo who decided not to play Poehling up the line-up, that was MSL. Marty surely didn't see anything in Poehling that was worth the promotion up the line-up.

These days management work as a group...

At one point Poehling was moving up the lineup. Then he got a concussion. When he came back he was back on the 4th line.

At any rate he's a powerful skater but his frame is on the slighter side. I think he needs to add muscle to avoid injury.

That would still have left them with Matheson, who's 6 years older and $4M more expensive than Ty Smith.

I agree that Petry for Marino would have been nice.

Matheson had better offensive numbers than Marion last year, and the analytics guy on Tony's sick podcast yesterday said they didn't come from playing on the pp.

What makes you think Marino is better than Matheson?

Poehling got good enough to be a serviceable depth guy on an NHL team, but it does look like he's plateaued a bit. In the end, he was getting buried in the chart and was pretty expandable, even more so with Dach coming in. He didn't get to the 100 NHL games mark though so it's still early for him, there's a possibility he could still get better. It's a risk, but IMO it's not a big one. At least we got something for him when he still had some value.

6’2, skilled, great passer, great skater. Ya, total bum.

The guys had two seasons derailed by injuries. Last year was his first full year in the league. Limited minutes with limited line mates and still showed potential.
Great passer, great skater lol. We are using the term “great” a bit loosely here. His lack of skill and more importantly, his low IQ are preventing him from becoming a full time NHLer. His skills can be worked on, his IQ isn’t improving at this stage of the game. He was always overhyped here. Voted our number 1 prospect by our HF scouting gurus haha.

I can't be disgruntled about this trade. Doesn't Petry have NMC and NTC? This would certainly limit the options. Is it just a coincidence that Pittsburgh is not too far from Michigan? Isn't that where Petry lives? Other options would have been Chicago and Detroit I suppose. But Pittsburgh maybe has a little more left in the tank. And then of course there is the COVID stuff.

Matheson is younger and has the potential to get better.

Good riddance, Petry!

I remember reading that too (that Petry’s wife was annoyed with all the restrictions we had here).

I can’t remember where so… might not be true (from good source).
Because she couldn’t get her mother up from Texas to help w kids - who its was insinuated wasn’t vaccinated

Lest we forget, Petry gave up UFA in 2015 to sign w Habs because his wife fell in love w Mtl, and again signed an extension because wife & kids were very happy in Mtl.

Shouldn’t be lost w all the noise…

Anavar and lots of milk!

Marino is a legitimately good two-way defenseman that is still young, has good term and money on his contract and plays on the right side, which would allow us to better balance the pairings.

Matheson? Let's just say he's had some issues.

Ah ok that makes sense. I was wondering because people travel to and back from USA constantly without issues. I forgot about the unvaxed.

Doesn't look like a good trade for us, but I'm ok with it. We had to trade Petry, he put the habs in a sucky situation. Matheson is solid, and he's still pretty young. Just very far from what we'd have gotten if we'd traded Jeff last summer.

He has his qualities, but Poehling didn't earn his way to play on the top line.

This thread is hilarious. Before the trade most were thinking Habs would eat salary, take on bad players or give premium pick/prospect to move Petry.

10 minutes later, move Petry for a younger, top 4 D, from Montreal who’s a PMD coming off his best year and this is the worst trade in the world, ever. Were you all expecting to get Makar back in the trade? Lol.

Never stop HF boards. Never stop.

Definitely agree.

I don't understand a lot of the comments in this thread.

I can't believe Poehling has this many defenders, must be those who voted him above Suzuki in our prospect poll.
I mean it is par for the course. Habs fans love their 4th liners and 6th defencemen. I will never not remember the outrage on this board when they traded Diaz...like we gave up on Bobby Orr or something. He was back in Europe 2 years later lol.

It’s probably the same people that can’t let go not selecting Wright… 😄😄
