I disagree, clearly, Matheson was a targeted player by this management.

I hope so.

But Hughes said in his presser that they were going to have take back a contract. It may have been Hughes that negotiated to have Matheson in play, but he was in fact the best contract in play, given the situation which is they were going to have to take back a contract.

There is literally an article on RDS where Hughes said that he insisted on Matheson. There is no debate.

Hughes said he wanted to sign/get a D to replace Petry so he managed to kill two birds with one trade.

He could have signed a D on the ufa market without giving up assets after trading Petry for futures.

The bird he missed is getting the futures in the transaction. But hopefully Matheson, like Eddy, provides good mentorship for the youth and then is moved for good futures.

Or perhaps Matheson works out really well and he's here excelling for 10 years. We'll find out...

But I'd feel more comfortable if we moved the Matheson and Anderson contracts for futures, instead of risking them being albatross contracts next to Gallagher.

I understand that Petry had to go ASAP but even if he is making 6.25M$ we are taking 4.875M$ with a additional year so this isn’t a cap dump situation + we are giving them a 23yo that will play in their bottom 6… Regardless how useless Poehling was in MTL, PIT are top heavy that bottom 6 is pretty bad he will have a spot especially since he make .75M$… a 4th round pick Just doesn’t make up for Petry > Matheson + Poehling… I understand that the situation right now is pretty bad and that those player didn’t have a future in MTL but if they are playing else where they have some value… I think retaining 50% and getting better pick would have been better for the future and the tank + it would have clear more cap space in the next 3 years and would not have the 4th year… let hope that the situation will change and we will be able to flip Matheson in the next 3 years. I don’t think the Petry requesting a trade screw us as much has is 15 team no trade, which probably left us we very few option. Because if you remove most of the team that have cap space you probably have 5 teams or less that could be looking the add Petry( Dal, Det, Car, LA, Pit) everyone probably can’t make it fit at all Which doesn’t help getting value.

Ah so because one person can do it, another can? That's such a crock of shit. And it was also a lot longer then the playoff run, and Petry's kids were a fair bit younger. The youngest was just 2. And his wife was pregnant and he couldn't be there to help her and the 3 other children.

Calling a person toxic for that is just so ridiculous.
However, his wife could have been vaccinated and stayed in Montreal she made the choice or they did as a family for her to return to the states due to their beliefs. I am sure she had plenty of help in Montreal the bottom line is he wanted out and he is lucky that KH was willing to mke it work.

Gudbranson at 4X4? Or Chiarot at 4X4,75?

I'll take Matheson any day of the week.

None of their other family was there - they're all in the US. I don't know anything about their vaccination status (and if you check the threads, I'm very pro vaccination - hell, I still wear a mask into stores because it's just a minor inconvenience to me when others are clearly still worried about the virus). His wife had also posted a few times about discrimination towards her in recent months (before going back the US) about being treated poorly due to not speaking French.

Petry is a hockey player who is away a lot. They had 3 kids. She was pregnant. It made complete sense for her to want to be closer to family. Maybe Jeff thought he could handle it at first, but realized he couldn't after they made the decision.

Petry never threatened to stop showing up. He never threatened to quit. He never threatened any of that. He requested a trade so that he could be closer to his family. I'm sure he does feel lucky and grateful that Hughes was able to do that. And if Hughes wouldn't have been able to do that, Petry would have been here for training camp. Pretty simple.

My ''hot takes'' are just a normal view of the trade by someone following the nhl overall. Not my fault if you don't look outside your own backyard when you watch hockey.
You don't even take one second to objectively dissect trades!

You're the master of kneejerk reaction on this board.

The worst is that even after having time to think about it you usually have a too big ego to admit that you were completely wrong.

This is a disgustingly bad trade. Folks were talking about a 1st for Petry just a few weeks ago. Got Matheson instead, and just gave away Poehling. Gross.

The crazy thing too is Mathesons contract is worse than Petrys.
Nah, they got a 4th for him. Which is more than they would have got when he went on waivers in a few months.

Yeah, there were some crazy contracts given out. And then Brent Burns, Petry, and McDonagh basically go for free...

I always thought, one of our best trade chips to try to get good furtures was Petry (50% retained) + Edumundson. That gives the acquiring team an excellent 2nd (or even 1st) pair.

Wonder if the Pens would have given up Owen Pickering + their 2023 1st for that package if we took back Petterson and also gave them Poehling? We could still take Matheson's contract if the pens want...

i like the move. Matheson is going to be a very good mentor for the young dmen and i hope that they will get a better a more appropriated nightlife, then what we have seen last decades

...I watch every team and watch on my two TV set-up in my Man Cave every night until the wee hours, as I don't sleep much (Severe Chronic Pain sufferer), as I've stated on this Forum on numerous occasions...my family jokes constantly that I should be paid to watch hockey because that's pretty much all I do watch...I'm retired, all I have is time...and you still haven't updated your avatar, btw...

The trade hinges on Matheson being good and Poehling not panning out (I for one haven't thrown in the towel yet).

We'll see how these two things work out... Matheson seems like a risk to me and there was no need to include Poehling, unless they were already going to move him for nothing anyways given we have too many forwards.

Matheson had a great year last year. So let's hope for the best.
