Really frustrating night. It is what it is. Isles have been a kryptonite matchup for them. They come to play their Cup, play zero mistake hockey, interfere beyond belief and the NYR outside of Fox don't seem to have a pulse.

I'll rest my head easy on the pillow with how the NYR have played post TDL and even the #s tonight weren't bad. But it's extremely frustrating no way around it.

It totally is but I would much rather be in our position both this year and long term.

The game the isles play where they obstruct and interfere and get away with it, is a perfect matchup against us.
They play a heavy game and those two things together are just things that guys like mika and panarin struggle with.
Kakko and laf are actually the type of guys who should probably thrive in a game like tonight.

It's so frustrating that Hunt keeps getting a top 9 spot. This guy kills any chance of offense on whatever line he is on. He is just a terrible terrible player in the offensive zone. I don't understand how Gallant doesn't see this. Injuries or not, you keep him on the 4th line, promote Motte if you need to.

In fairness Motte isn't any good offensively either. He has speed, pks and is physical for his size. That's about it.

Still puts up much better numbers over the last few years than Hunt while playing strictly on a 4th line, while Hunt has been somehow on the 2nd line with one of the best wingers in the league.

But yes, I don't want Motte there either, but at this point I would take him there over Hunt.

Hopefully Strome is back next game. That moves Copp to RW and Hunt down to the 4th. Then Kakko and Rooney come back sometime next week.

What's the record for the earliest a coach has pulled the goalie from an NHL game? Is there some sort of secret bet amongst the coaches to see who can pull the goalie the earliest each season?

I like Gallant but to do that with 7+ minutes left in the game only to go back to playing with the goalie in the net just looks silly. We didn't even have a power play when he did that. Team looked like garbage the whole night so there's no way adding an extra skater to the ice at even strength was going to spark a 3 goal comeback.

I know there’s gonna be some stinkers and let down games but can we for once not play down to this group of over the hill bums and beat their asses?

Just a game you throw out.

Positive is McKegg and Reaves should be the first two forwards scratched when healthy.

There is no fixing that third d pair though, fortunately in the playoffs in close games they will be playing 8-10 minutes.
I would have had Gauthier and Brodz in that game in lieu of McKegg and to give Hunt a break . Reaves has to fight somebody in a game like this .....get rid of him and find a guy that is willing for half the price even if he wins or loses....at least he shows up . Kreider could hit a couple of Isles on the boards and change the atmosphere in a game like this quick enough....but he could play these days without shoulder pads ...he is a goal scorer now .

Checks notes.
Goalie didn't play like prime Hasek.. check
Powerplay didn't score.. check
Yup, that looks like a loss.
Isles were all over Rangers pointmen the whole game....our team did not adapt to that...tried same stuff every time....it just stifled our offense . One does not have to be an NHL coach to watch that on the game tape today.

Game was whatever. Boring. Rare occasion where Igor got outplayed by his opponent.

Why would Gallant pull Igor with eight minutes left but than not do it when we had good possession in the zone with three minutes left?

Also, I know Laf has looked good the past few games but I still can't wrap my head around exactly what we're doing with him long term on LW when he has one of the league's best goal scoring LW'ers and one of the league's best LW'ers period on long term contracts blocking him. What's the long term plan here? He played 13 minutes tonight.
It's obvious....Panarin shifts back to his natural side . He is good enough to handle it . Kreider likely could as well....Lafreniere is the last one that needs to make that shift .

Statistically speaking, if you’re a big enough underdog, you should pull the goalie before the game even starts.

That said, that game can eat a dick. The Islanders, when in their game, play an insanely effective defensive game a la the Lemaire Devils. I have zero interest in watching that on ice product. It was boring then and is boring now.

Tough game, that Martin goal was a killer. Let the Islanders play exactly the suffocating boring game they wanted to.
