Pierre Luc Dubois - What's the allure?

Not defending him here but I also think his skating stride doesn't do him any favors

Even when he's actually hauling ass I don't think he has any movement above the knees haha
Yeah, he's one of those guys that doesn't look like he's skating hard, even when he's going fast. We fans like dudes who flail around and perform to the rafters that they're working hard.

He sure is playing like that this season.:naughty:
I’ll place a bet on the Kings making the play offs and PLD firimg up. He wanted to get there and he’ll fire up in that situation. Whenever people discuss effort , I think that there’s a huge gap between having a mental issue and an attitude issue. The feeling that I’ve gotten so far from PLD leans to the attitude side of it. If the Kings make the PO’s, he’ll be a force to reckon on.

Yep you pretty much nailed it. He has a ton of physical gifts but he doesn't have the natural talent or IQ to let him rack up points while half-assing shifts. For him to put up points he has got to be using his physical gifts to their fullest and be scratching and clawing out there for every point. When he is not going all out it shows. Most top point producing NHL players have that x factor that lets them cruise at 80% from time to time and still be putting up points, this happened on the Jets with Connor and even on the Kings with Fiala both of whom have bad games where they are not all there but end the night with 2 points. PLD doesn't have that "easy point producing" ability, when he is putting up points esp at 5v5 he has to work and go as close to a 100% as possible and scratch and claw out there which he sometimes doesn't do.

I think that is why he frustrates fans, when he going all out he looks like a top level 1C in the league, but he is either unwilling unable to do that for big chunks of the season and when he's not doing that he looks like a pretty mid 2 C.

If Kings can keep him motivated or help him find that level esp during the critical portions of the post season they'll get good value from the player.
I dont know if Connor has another 90 point season in him without Dubois. Dubois does a lot to make room on the ice for other players. The Jets were able to put anyone on the other wing and it didn't matter that was their best line. They made Svechnikov look like a NHL player.

Stylistically they're nothing alike, but he reminds me of Petr Nedved who was very overhyped in his day as a great player, when he was almost always between ok to good and sometimes very good.

PLD looked good with KFC as his winger for most of the first half last year averaging a point per game mostly before he fell off the earth in January.

I believe him to be a 25-30 goal scorer (60-70 point) that can draw more penalties than he takes with physical play and can be a much more effective defensive player than he has been so far in his career.

Not sure that is worth 8m/year but it is not terrible production with cap going up.

As a Jet Fan I like PLD and was sorry he wanted out of Winnipeg. But now after seeing the Jets with the edition of the LA players in the trade for PLD, the Jets look like a much better overall team and this with Vilardi out for the least few weeks. So right now I am very happy with the trade and I agree with others that PLD's contract is about $1M to high.

If he becomes a point per game player in the future then he may earn his contract but I'm not sure he has the will or desire to get there.

I can best describe Dubois as having Keith Primeau syndrome. A big center with untapped offensive potential, draft pedigree of a 3rd overall pick, bounced around a bit and an exaggerated reputation based partially around a beastly playoff performance vs Toronto.

The problem has persisted around him ever since his draft.

Once his contract expires he's going to go home to Montreal, where he clearly always wanted to play.

The stride doesn't lie. NHL edge stats have PLD as below league average for top speed for forwards this season and slower than all Kings regular forwards except Kopitar. JAD was also slower than PLD in his one game this year. PLD is more than 1 mph slower than last year and the year before that. Is that slow LA ice, injury, effort, combos of those, or player tracking instrument issues? I don't know.

I def don't mean to suggest he's got a high top speed or anything. Only that when he IS (relatively) hauling ass/full speed/full motor it doesn't look much different than when he's coasting other than the carrying two dudes on his back on the way to the net.

Again not to defend him at all

Torts yelled at him

His feelings are still but hurt

He never fails to give 60-70%

Pure Cancer
Apparently he actually likes Torts. So much so that before the Jets hired Bowness, Dubois went to management and lobbied for them to go after Torts.
