It's a jazz band. They want to buy new tubas.

Paul Giblin ‏@PaulGiblinAriz

@sundevilfan1224 The NHL brass is still meeting with potential ownership groups.

Running silent, running deep...

Hoo's there! ;)

But, our The Bad Cactus Brass Band already has a tuba!

The NHL is probably turning over all the stones in the case they find someone dumb enough to invest their money in Glendale as a hockey market.

Ya, and man thats brutal. Right underneath Giblin goes on to tweet with "schedule your heart attacks, house fires & car wrecks for somewhere other than Glendale next year" as the Fire Department & EMT's are $850,000 short on their budget requirements. Either close a station or revolve daily station closings like power brown outs when the grids are low on reserves. I sure as Hell hope someone points things like that out to the NHL should they leave town for good. Sure, the foolish past Council & Mayor voted to approve those ridiculously massive expenditures to the league but c'mon here, a Grifts a Grift a Grift.

Yeah, after today's budget presentation, more property tax increases coming... :shakehead

But...
According to the document posted by CasualFan, the NHL has to renew their AMUL deal 5 days after the season is over but must submit info 3 days before that day. So they have until monday.

If they don't:
-Their AMUL deal is then void. The new owner would need to deal with COG. But they already started an AFU, so the new owner would need to either apply or deal something with new arena manager.
-Or CoG cave in (doubtful) and decide to provide a subsidy. In this case, the whole circus starts again with votes, and GWI and whatnot. I doubt this will happen.
-Or NHL don't/won't/can't sell the Coyotes and they are paying the bill for 2013-14 but need to deal with the new arena manager.

If they do:
-They will either need to find an owner or not, but then the circus starts again.

Am I missing something? Can the NHL renew their AMUL and sell the team? Do they have any penalties if they do that?

All of this is on a tight timeline as a relocation needs to be announced in about a month to give time to the hosting city, the time it needs to get ready.

BUT....

As I pointed out the NHL worked out a modification to the AMUL with Glendale to run on a month-to-month basis this past season. I'm presuming that was because of Jamison's attempt to negotiate his AMF with Glendale, but there's been no document available to say how long that arrangement was to last or if it's still in effect.

This is what I read into this as well.

You think so? I think not. The NHL must now be aware that they can't afford to waste much time looking for owners in Glendale, otherwise there won't be enough time for Plan B (QC or I suppose possibly Seattle). And they must also be aware that no one wants the team without a huge public subsidy (indeed, nobody wanted it WITH a huge public subsidy), and there will be no more huge public subsidy coming. My guess is the NHL is already focusing on Plan B.

Property tax income took a major dive when the housing market tanked (by as much as 50%). Glendale isn't the only city that has had to raise the tax rates since and most tax bills are still less than 2005.

Ya has just got to be brutal if you own in Glendale. The market crashes, your house losing goodness knows how much in value in comparison to what you paid for it yet your left holding on paying a massive monthly on the mortgage, then its assessed at whatever new reality your facing in the - columns, and if that wasnt bad enough, the screws are now turned on your tax rates in order to make up the shortfall's in the citys' budgets. I really feel for people caught in that kind of a situation. Some are forced into either mortgage or tax default because they cant pay both, its one or the other, credit facilities are still difficult to obtain, puts a Hell of a lot of stress on people, marriages, families.

This is how I tracked it http://hfboards.mandatory.com/showpost.php?p=58946453&postcount=273

It's possibile terms were change during the extensions but council meetings in last few months have made it sound like it was AMUL with no AMOA. Also, substantive changes would probably require council approval.

As always CF.... very nice job.

The two AZ Republic articles you linked in that post do mention a 31 day extension made by the NHL last July.

Can't remember where I saw it (possibly in a twitter feed) but I recall CM Martinez a few weeks later making a comment about a month-to-month deal with the NHL on the arena and it wasn't costing the city anything. But that's where that trail ended.

For now though I'm going with your interpretation that there's still an renewal deadline on the AMUL next week.

Ya, in effect it appear's the NHL's simply been extending the AMUL on a month to month basis since last May/June. Jamisons never-ending never-closing sale precipitating such. Like renting a hotel room by the hour, then another hour, another & so on & so forth. Then contemporaneously of course weve got a lockout so any action's not available anyway. Its just bizarre. Eccentric. Arcane. Like something Errol Flynn, Howard Hughes or Elvis wouldve gotten up to. Combination short-con game where the deals gonna close in the next 30 days, Jamison working the long-con and of course coming up short January 31st, 2013.... and then meanwhile, for reasons I cant fathom, theres $20M bucks left sitting in escrow. You cant make this stuff up.

Makes one how soon big news will be coming out, if this is the calm before the storm, or just a calm from one of the many doldrums in this saga (doldrums, AKA the Horse Latitudes, where people used to eat the dead horses. :deadhorse). Today's the last home game, tomorrow's the season ender, not that anyone in AZ will notice (thanks to the game not being televised there), the NHL needs to announce the AMUL renewal by Monday if they intend to stay. If this is the finale of the effort to keep the team in Phoenix, I will be somewhat disappointed. It's had so many wild moments.
