Phillip Broberg

This has been beaten to death. Broberg wanted out of Edmonton and there was no way the oilers could have matched. They did not have the cap space
technically after the Ceci trade we did have the cap space if they wanted to match, but as Stan said in his press conference the value at the time was off and way over paid for what he showed to that point.

Oilers fans are happy he is gone because he is so bad.
Blues fans are happy he is there because he has been so good.
That should be a lot of happy people. Why does nobody in this thread seem so?
Newsflash: Fans are toxic AF, especially online when you can post whatever you like while being anonymous.

Imo all of Broberg's demand to be traded was that his career was being stifled here. Bouchard would have done the same thing if we didn't trade Barrie and give him his top 4 spot, or if we kept him in the AHL as long as we did with Broberg. It's not like Bouchard's promotion was all merit. I was one of his biggest supporters here while many here said he was in bust territory. Very similar to Broberg. If we would have made a firm commitment to having Broberg stapled to Nurse for this season and paid him a bit more to reflect that, he would have stayed here happily. He would have likely been on the rotation for that #4 spot with Kulak and Stecher, and likely would have emerged as the far superior option there.

Ultimately the cash is what kept him away, likely because Broberg felt it was a reflection of the team's lack of commitment to him. It's no different than Holloway in this regard. He wanted out after we signed Skinner, and offered him league min. Our plan was to keep him as a bottom six player and he worried his development curve was better away from the Oilers.

All of that sounds spot on.

Dylan Holloway - 9 goals 8 assists in 28 games, +7. Tied for 1st in goals on his team and also career highs in 28 games.

Philip Broberg - 2 goals 10 assists in 16 games, +6. Career highs after 16 games.

Both look to be breaking out immediately
kind of says the oilers developed them properly, doesn't it.

They are getting an opprotunity they would not be getting in Edmonton, so that definitely help. St Louis was and is in a position to give these guys bigger roles. Holloway and Broberg would be no where near the PP in edmonton and that would affect their numbers. They went from playing 0.6 and 0.19PP/g to 1.21 and 1.04 respectively and that thier PP points equal 16% and 17% of thier point total. So good for them, but thats an opportunity they wouldnt have had in Edmonton.

also anyone who hates them for signing an offersheet is just stupid.

Broberg is a skilled young D-man. He is a good 2-way defenseman that is good defensively and offensively but I am hoping the Oilers can get someone stronger defensively then him at the deadline. He would get very little offensive opportunities on the Oilers and he isn't good enough defensively right now to invest 4.6 million in, at least for the Oilers. He is a great fit for a building team like St. Louis.

Broberg didn’t have his best game last night, and it may have been one of his worst games of the season. But it still wasn’t even that bad, so that basically shows you how good he has been.

Holloway was excellent.

But this is the fun thing about sports. Oilers fans can get their jabs in right now, no hurt feelings here. But when it comes to two players who are 23 years old and already looking very promising, they have long careers ahead of them and will have plenty of opportunities to burn the Oilers in the future. The next matchup(s) should be fun.

Broberg's advanced stats are interesting to look through. It seems he's struggling quite a bit in an elevated top 4 and at times top pairing role. His gf/ga results have been good, but seem to be driven by a really high PDO while having poor possession, shots and scoring chance metrics, but he actually does have pretty good high danger chance differential. Not necessarily a bad thing, but rather showing he's probably not ready for that role.

Will be interesting to see how his season progresses.

Holloway on the other hand seems to be very deserving of his production and is playing a really solid 2-way game.

The Blues problem is they are never bad enough to draft top end talent like the Oilers do all the time. In the past 30 years, only a few teams have made the playoffs more than the Blues.

Note to League: if you want your best chance to beat the Blues every night. Just boo the emotionally sensitive Broberg and he’ll cough up the puck all night. Anyone can get in on this one NHL life hack, not just Oilers fans.

Well if that’s their “problem” then maybe they should have embraced their mediocrity and gone into tank mode this summer instead of poaching players via offer sheets. But I’m guessing this isn’t actually a “problem,” and instead you were looking for some device to remind us that the Oilers did tank. So, uh, mission accomplished. Super relevant to the topic of discussion (Broberg).

Yah the blues have a long storied history of making the playoffs since coming into the league and only 1 Stanley cup to show for it.

Nope, by signing Broberg and Holloway, they just sped up their rebuild. The Blues don’t believe in tanking.

Winning the cup isn’t easy. The Blues had numerous teams that were good enough to win, but it just didn’t happen for many reason.

It's all good until you remember Troy Stecher is your 4D.

One game obviously doesn't matter, but I do find it kind of funny reading some of the posts downplaying how bad Broberg was last night. He had 3 horrible turnovers that all led directly to grade A scoring chances and he's lucky Binnington bailed him out or he'd have been a -3 tonight in a 7-2 game. The McDavid goal was the least concerning of his gaffes. Perry pickpocketed him and sent Hyman in alone while he had time and space to break the puck out, and Draisaitl did the same thing leading to a breakaway.

He was a turnover machine last night.

I just want this f***ing thread to die. Be locked. Disappear into the f***ing abyss for all I care. Because at this point, it's being used to spew bullshit because apparently, some non-Oilers fans have your team rent-free in their heads and apparently, you can't tell the difference between those fans and actual Blues fans.
have you considered clicking the “ignore thread” button?

I'm sure Oiler fans have been downplaying his successes all year as well, right? All players have off nights from time to time and you'd think a fan base that regularly watches Nurse and Bouchard would realize that. Congrats on the win, but it's just one game.

I'm genuinely interested in how the rest of his season will go tbh. He's put up good point totals on GF/GA results, but he's still getting caved in on possession/shot/scoring chance metrics. He is breaking even on high danger chance differential though so that's a good sign at least.

I agree though it is just one game, but let's call it what is was a terrible performance. No need to downplay it and say things like "he didn't even play that bad". Of course every player has games like this every once in a while.
