Speculation: 2024-2025 General Discussion III: 4 nations, 4th line scoring

I'm not big on some of these huge UFA names who have either already won their cup and/or are looking to cash in massively. Plus, I don't see us making someone the new highest paid player on the team, which is what a player like Rantanen would become.

If we're trying to add another truly high level player, I'd rather do it via trade and shell out the assets for someone who has some term and a cap hit that doesn't exploit the increased ceiling, i.e a Thompson/Pettersson(Edit: just realized Pettersson is 11+, thought he was 9.5 for some reason) instead of a Rantanen or Marner. Sheer examples here, not saying I'd pursue.

I would check in on Jamie Benn to see if he'd take a short term deal at a decent rate, chase a cup type of thing.

I wonder what he's up to.

Pettersson is asscheeks, Tage is someone we could use but he just screams injury issues and rapid decline at that size.

I would definitely take the risk with Thompson, his contract is absurd in a good way. This guy is borderline elite and in his prime. Wasn't implying any interest in Pettersson, but asscheeks is a bit harsh.

Elias Pettersson since he signed his 11.6/year contract on March 3rd, 2024:

82 games
17 goals
37 assists
54 points

Asscheeks is understating it, Nick Paul has 5 more goals and 4 less points then him this year at 1/4th the cost.

If we're going for a big name in free agency or in a trade it needs to be a defenseman. Our forward group is young enough to keep playing well for a while, but if Hedman or Mcdonagh falls off a cliff we're just f***ed.

Saw this on the Athletic and thought it could be an option for us. Idk how good they actually are, but they're at least producing at a decent rate. Would give us decent depth.

Paul is a pretty good player though. Pettersons production/caphit is asscheeks. I think we all know what both of you are saying.

Point per game last season and 100+ before that, true #1 center without a doubt. Acting like he's not a good player is pretty wild, despite selecting a rough stretch of his career. That will change in a hurry. "Asscheeks", lol. Didn't endorse adding Pettersson but these extremes are hilarious.

Only 4 players in the league have a higher cap hit then him and he's scoring at Nick Pauls rate. Acting like his contract isn't a significant risk with over 1 seasons worth game sample is rather dense.

"Didn't endorse adding Pettersson" only just brought him up via trade a couple posts up lmao.

Adding Evans would allow Paul to move into the top 6 and Evans would be the 3C. Amazing on the PK and would be a great bottom 6 piece this year and hopefully long term as well

His shooting percentage is way too high and unsustainable. He's currently at almost 20% and has 11 goals playing on average 15:32 a game. Is he better than our bottom 6 for production right now? Sure, but only if he holds up that shooting percentage long term which is for sure not going to happen. If the goal is get his defensive game, well...we have a Top 10 PK and Top 5 in GA in the league. Like I don't see how he helps over what we have. I like him as a player, but I really don't see the improvement right now. In the off season as a replacement for Glendenning, Essyimont, Atkinsons, for sure make a run at him since he is a UFA.
