These are the worst playoff losses in my life. As I’ve gotten older I don’t let them bother me as much
By far the worst loss in Eagles history. You could almost hear a pin drop in that stadium when Barber was taking the clinching interception the other way.

That team would have beaten the Raiders and won it all imo. It felt like they were a team of destiny.

32 degrees. Even then I didn’t take things like that seriously. Something never happens until it does. How you play in the present is a much greater factor than games that happened in the past

His OBP is over .340 which is very good. I should rephrase he is good at the plate. Nick's is .311. Terrible.
But he puts no pressure on the defense once he gets on base. That’s something that actual good leadoff hitters do, and that he will never do. He’s not going to steal second or go first to third on a single to right, or score on a double in the gap. He doesn’t distract the pitcher when he’s on first. Leadoff hitters should do those things consistently. Those are some of the little things that good teams do.

Fair enough, but the all power nothing else off-season with hoskins already on the team was highly questionable imo
Sure. It goes deeper than that though. They haven't been able to develop homegrown hitters so they have to add them through free agency. For a team that wants to spend, you're at the mercy of what the market has to offer for that particular year. Schwarber and Castellanos were two of the top hitters that year. They are obviously flawed, one more than the other, but that's the nature of free agency in baseball.

Sad part is it probably would have worked with a few fluke hits.

When doe Nick ever do anything positive? I think your perception of where he bats confuses how he actually performs at the plate. Who on this team should leadoff currently? This is 2023. Maybe Stott if he walks more which I think he will eventually do.

Yep, very true. Stott and bohm are decent but not looking like true plus hitters at this point

His BABIP is over 0.400 and he doesn't walk much. He could be due for a big sophomore slump with his bat, but that glove still plays.

I’m not defending Nick at all. I want both of them gone. Although Nick is at least serviceable in the field.

I mean when the other team is scared to death of you taking them deep to start a game that they walk you on four straight pitches, I'd say that's a decent option at the top of the lineup. I know you're old school and will never buy into this but the team lost for many reasons. Schwarber hitting leadoff was not one of them.

You mean Rojas or Marsh? Im typing about Schwarber.

Nick is a terrible fielder (all the numbers year after year back this up as well as the eye yest)) and has a terrible approach batting. If Kyle just plays DH he is fine. When he has to play left field that is when trouble arises. Him as DH is ok. They really need to trade Nick this offseason, but I doubt it.

Looking back, that team had some very bad receivers. And the Tampa Defense just destroyed them.

This loss is by far one of the most embarrassing losses in Philadelphia sports history. At least the Eagles lost their super bowls to elite quarterbacks and great coaches. Losing a 2-0 lead to an 84 win Diamondbacks team is pretty brutal. I thought for sure this series was done after game 5.

But that’s the only time they’re scared of him, when he’s standing in the box. He can do that hitting cleanup. Maybe he provides some protection for Harper. Yes, I’m old school but I‘ve seen leadoff hitters with power who could also pressure a defense once they got on base. Hell, Turner would do that batting leadoff.

Whoops, totally thought you were talking about Rojas.

For those wanting to move on from Nola, I guess you'll have to hope that the Phillies get lucky with international signings. Otherwise, I have no clue how they'll come up with those innings.

Rojas may not hit, but you have to remember he came up straight fom AA. That's a huge jump for a guy that wasn't exactly a top 100 prospect (some mentioned him at the tail end tbf). He's always been a good bat-to-ball guy, but he'll definitely have to add some strength if he's ever going to be a true threat at the plate.

I think Bohm is what he is at this point. A slightly above average hitter without the game power or plate discipline to be more than that. Stott with more power is an All-star. He does everything else at a high level. That's a big ask though.

Ironically they drove in the only two runs of the game.

Nick is also terrible in the field. It's just that he makes a few sliding catches that stick in our minds. These are catches that are often caught without a dive by average outfielders.

=====================

I do laugh at the lineup discourse though. Wasn't the beef with Gabe that he changed the lineup too much. Typical Philly fan shit. Attacking the lowest hanging fruit.

I think both will end up being plus hitters, postseason struggles notwithstanding.

I think the best answer lies in using Castellanos' money on the bullpen, but they'll never do something like that after the deal he signed.

With Hoskins coming back, Schwarber MUST be a DH. He's a 2+ WAR player in the DH spot and replacement level or worse if he's forced to play outfield. LF and CF should be Marsh/Pache/Rojas. RF goes to Harper obviously. Castellanos is the obvious man out.

The could platoon him with Marsh in LF and use Pache for late game OF defensive substitutions, shifting Harper to first in those situations. It's an interesting thought but I'm hardly sure Nick would be happy doing that.

I'm decisively team No-Nick but I understand they can't just ship him out willy nilly

Turner should be leadoff, and he should be purposely trying to hit gappers to get on base for Schwarber and Harper. How this never settled into their roles this year is beyond me.

Assuming we bring back Hoskins next year, our lineup should go Turner-Schwarber-Hoskins-Harper-JT. You do that and you're going to prevent pitchers from intentionally walking Schwarber or Harper, which should assure us of giving our best guys a legitimate shot of dictating games. The last couple days they were pitching around them and hoping they chased, or at least put the thought in their minds they would be walked. Take that strategy away from the opponent.

I hope Bohm and Stott take a big step next year as contact hitters. They struggled a lot this postseason but they were almost the entire offense tonight. I just want 2-3 good contact hitters on this team, like guys ~.300 30-40 doubles. Basically guys you can count on when you need situational hitting. Phillies don’t really have anyone that is just looking to slap a base hit or hit the gap. It’s all that angular swing aiming for the fences. Maybe it’s analytics or the hitting coach, but I’m a believer that the key to postseason success is stringing together runners, and some timely hits. It’s clear after last year’s WS and the NLCS this year that the long ball can be guarded against. The last couple years the Phillies inability to play small ball hurt them big time

Im not a Nola fan but he isnt to blame for yesterday. Though you dont really need 3 starters to win in the playoffs. Just need two and a bullpen or a really good offense (see Texas). Sanchez can take up some of his innings, need to find someone else though maybe they will have to find someone else and get lucky.

Why would you stack your two best lefty power bats? That's just making it easy on the opposing manager. In a universe where they have Soto sure, but that's the only thing the manger should try to avoid.

The most important thing a leadoff hitter can do is get on base. If that's not your #1 priority there is no discussion to be had. You are only guaranteed to lead off once in a game. Turner can still do his stuff in the two hole.

And Schwarber was the tying run in the 9th. I hope you wouldn't have rather had Turner in that spot tonight.
