Nah they botched it. Expecting to score a TD & 2XP then stopping Mahomes from doing the same thing is a tall-order.

But in the end, it was a tactical error but not what I'd say is a giant blunder. They lost because they just aren't as good - and that's okay.
Stopping Mahomes in general is a tall order. If they give it to Mahomes first it's basically an automatic loss because your own best bet is to score to tie and then you still have to stop him again. And the Niners defense was already gassed after being on the field last.

At least if they score first, they have the chance to win by either stopping him or scoring on the next drive. They only botched it by needing to settle for a FG.

I've largely stayed out of this, but if you're going to attack this as a problem with any degree of seriousness, you need to decide how much of a favorite or dog you are in the game. The two teams involved are not in a vacuum. Extending the game favors better teams.

The same goes for this. The more of a dog you are, the more you should shade toward going for 2. There's also a band of relative equilibrium where both options are defensible.

Ah, thanks for pointing this out. All this time I had this thing in the back of my head "yeah, but it depends...", but I couldn't put my finger on it. I was missing this aspect.

Yeah, Mahomes is great and probably the QB a defense would least want to face on a do or die drive but 49ers have a great defense as well; they held the same Mahomes to 19 points in 4 quarters. I don’t really have a problem with flatbrim having faith in his defense. If they win in OT this isn’t a story

If you give the ball to Mahomes first, you know if you need to go for 2 or not to tie. Sure you may lose, but obviously San Fran doesn’t kick a FG if they know Mahomes scored a TD.

But anyway all of it is tough.

I think where the Niners screwed up was not going for it on 4th and 4. When you have 3rd and 4, play it as you are going to have 2 plays to get 4 yards. They were moving it decently on the ground. When they kicked I knew it was over.

This is kind of where I'm at. The answer is get a FING stop. That what needed to happen. It didn't, regardless of who takes the ball first.

They lost this game with 2 min left in Q4. The left side run was working...got 5 on 1st with a left run, they passed to kittle for 1yrd on 2nd, then 2 minute warning. and passed incomplete on 3rd IIRC. Kicked the FG and gave it back with 1:53. 4 downs, run left to get damn 10 yards. If they do that, run the clock out and kick the FG or get a TD.

Wheelin' and dealin' a bunch of picks but I think the main focus of this draft needs to be defense and OL.

So I've been reading for 4 days now that "the 49ers TD (CMC) shouldn't have counted since they had an ineligible man downfield."

Finally watched the highlights and specifically looked for it. What a load of crap! When Jennings throws the ball the lineman is nowhere near the line of scrimmage! When CMC starts running after the catch, sure, he's 3-4 yards downfield but that doesn't matter at all at that point.

Have people gone this insane? Making up shit or saying just plain wrong stuff because they have no idea what they're talking about?
Boomer Esiason said that. And since he's a veteran analyst & former player, and on the CBS crew the average fan is going to believe him.

What is crazy is the high vs low for #74. He made the key block to prevent the KC DB from getting to CMC to either tackle him for a loss or maybe pick off the pass. Yet, he's the OL that didn't block Jones, but instead doubled with the other G after the C pulled, leaving Jones free.

Most of these mock drafts, have so many trades it's kind of insane. Plus, most are putting in returns that don't line up with deals that have been made over the past few seasons.

OL, they have 4/5 spots filled assuming Kelce does retire with Jurgens moving to C. Will need a RG. But, yes, Defence should be the focus.

Yeah I always just trade and pick up additional picks in these mocks to just to draft as many player as possible. No one is drafting 20 times in one draft.

Can never have too much talent on the OL. If someone is there at any pick that can make an impact, even as a backup, that's gonna be a safer and better pick than a DB or LB in most cases.

I've said before, the only position coach that has seemed to polish rocks into diamonds is stoutland. Time to use some lower picks on rocks and hope he comes through.

IMO, overall It's a crap draft for DEs , but good Safeties and LBs in the 2nd and 3rd. This is where I hope a trade down to get a high third happens, and we get some D youth help.

The quality of LB seems to be falling in the draft in terms of first round talent. Not that Phi would likely go LB in round 1. But, feels like there hasn't been a great LB since Roquan Smith who went top 10.

With the pending outflow of vets, the Eagles do need starters vs the let them sit approach they used in recent drafts with Jurgens.

This year the first round is OL, WR, CB from the looks of it. Some solid DT prospects. DE isn't as deep as last year. LB, no first round talent but maybe so decent day 2 options.

I expect OT/OG to get heavy action in the first, and QB, the top 3 of course, and then somebody ALWAYS overreaches on the second tier guys, of which there are many.

WR and CB are sprinkled in throughout the first DE has a top 3 and then the cliff....

22 is a great spot to draft IMO, and a killer spot to trade down out of.

I'm ready for April already lol.

@Captain Dave Poulin I got some more Michigan games. Sorry it took so long.

Games watched: Bama, Ohio St, Penn St

Colson is a Round 2 guy to me and the type of risk I like to take. Admittedly this is my preference of LB flavors. Wonderful player pre-snap. There's a play at 11:42 Q1 in the Ohio St game I loved. He takes a wrong step to just outside the hash when he sees the LG pulling. The play is a quick game screen to Xavier Johnson to the other side, but he's still the one hunting it down. He can carry TEs up the seam. He keeps himself super clean in the run game. Where he gets into trouble is often with misdirection. I'd still rather have a guy who takes something away than freezes in no man's land even if he needs to be right a little more often.

For the Cowboys specifically, Zimmer would love a guy like him who can reliably fire through the A gaps. That's a fantastic scheme/player marriage. I think I like Colson better than Cooper for Zimmer specifically.

Thank you kindly, J. You think Zimmer is an OK hire?
