If Smith had somehow gone, I was thinking the Rams might want to hop up and grab one of the two, to line up their replacement for Stafford. Things seem to be working out well from their perspective, at least.
Think they are going for Caleb Williams next year.

Hooked going round 1 would have been an even bigger historical outlier than Walker at 1OA to me. No one has any idea if Hooker is an NFL QB. Not one person on the planet. He might not even be a backup.
He's also going on 26 and coming off an ACL.

Are you saying fit matters as well as raw talent? Does that apply to hockey as well?

Eagles stuck with a scheme (3/4 morphs into 4/3 under) that allows you to play fast edge guys in space and undersized LBs. Then Howie drafts/signs to that scheme. Let your DTs control the center of the field, and your edge/LBs chase everything to the perimeter and set up mismatches of DEs/SLBs against TEs and RBs in pass protection.

Find me one post ever where I've said schematic fit doesn't matter in the NFL. Hell, for CFB.

What the NHL does is blow itself while people who hate change clap like seals.

Lions

WTF was that RB selection?

Its not even a need of theirs. They have a couple of good RBs as it is.

And I was listening to WIP when they picked up LB Jack Campbell with the 18th pick, and all the commentators were like: "Jack who?"

What a disastrous 1st round for them. But the Jets, Dallas and 'Zona all fared badly too.

The Eagles had the best 1st round, but man, its tough determining who had the worst: the Lions? The Jets? Dallas? Arizona? Getting Nolan Smith wasn't the result of Howie's brilliance, it was just sitting there and watching other teams screw up.

It's sure as shit not Dallas. They didn't trade up and made a reasonable pick in the 20s.

It might be Houston, which is super weird to say given that they picked reasonable players at 2 and 3. They basically bet everything on one game at 2. And gave up way, way too much to get 3.

Still really surprised they gave up their own 1st in 2024 instead of Cleveland's

You cannot give up a potential 2024 1OA in any trade this year. It's impossibly awful.

Absolutely.

Not sure why Houston didn't just take the QB and grab some guys in the late 20s - but they have zero foresight as an organization, so I guess none of this is shocking.

When you break it down, they got the quarterback, and the top pass rusher (almost always going to be the top defensive player). Were you going to draft either of them next year?

This was the QB pressure chart I saw a few weeks ago that more than illustrates why Nolan Smith falling puzzles me, despite his stature

Also a nice chart to see how one of @JojoTheWhale 's favorites Mazi Smith stack up against top DTs in the last few years

They spent 2,12, 33, a potential 1OA in phenomenal QB class with a generational talent, and another pick.

They added a mid-rounder, an extremely high risk QB, and an EDGE1 without the typical top of draft reasonable upside.

I'm pretty sure we can question this.

But they just took their quarterback. They’re not doing that again next year. If Stroud wasn’t their guy, they take Anderson 2OV and move on.

You’re not planning to be a 3-win team next year, so you’re not getting on getting someone as good as Anderson.

I think if anything, the Cardinals should’ve made sure they were in fact getting the higher pick.

Do you really believe Houston made the no doubt-correct decision trading that package for Will Anderson?

AS JoJo said, if HOU doesn't take a big enough leap and gets the 1OA pick (which is wildly possible still)...the value of that pick will be through the roof. That's not counting all of the other stuff that was traded.

This is typical Houston being total screw ups, IMO.

One thing that's overlooked, Eagles are stockpiling guys who can fly for STs:
Nolan Smith 4.39
Kyon Johnson 4.40
Bradley 4.51
Davion Taylor 4.45
Ell;iss 4.58

Smith is a Reddick clone, except he's faster and more explosive, geez!

But you’re not planning to be the worst team in football next year. They play in a bad division vision, they play the NFC South, and have an extra home game. That could be 5 wins right there.

Right - and that's why Houston is incompetent. Their plan isn't to be bad, but they will be bad. Not being self-aware is a common characteristic of bad organizations & Houston reeks of it.

Even if it's a top 5 pick, it's crazy valuable. And it'll be in a range where teams will want to draft a QB (which typically makes it more valuable).
