OT: Philadelphia Eagles (NFL): Don't Cry Because It's Over, Smile Because it Happened (Offseason - 2023)

This doesn't really have anything to do with anything, it just popped into my head. But of the "big 3" of Rodgers, Brady, and Manning, only Peyton didn't act a fool in the twilight of his career.

As a huge Manning fan and a well-established Brady and Rodgers hater, I'll have to point out that it may have to do with Manning not being a narcissistic asshat, unlike the other two.

Haha, I wasn't being sarcastic. I actually do love that everybody is talking about the Chip '15 angle. Sh*t is hilarious.

Not much to analyze here. Mariota is athletic enough to run (more or less) the same-ish offense as Hurts, so good fit. 5 million base, 8 max is totally in line with market value for high-end veteran backup QBs. So all good.
Serious question. How often was the Backup qb important for a good playoff run? Other than nick foles off course

In the playoffs themselves? Probably not often.

But it can be important for setting up a playoff run when the starting QB misses a few games in the regular season. QB1 breaks some bones and misses 4 games. The difference between 3-1, 2-2 and 1-3 could be the difference when it comes to making the playoffs, winning the division or getting the #1 seed.

@Ironmanrulez Other backup QBs that weren’t named that won a Super Bowl:

  • Kurt Warner was the backup for the 1999 Rams and only played because Trent Green got hurt in the preseason.
  • Doug Williams was the backup for most of the year for Washington in 1987. Jay Schroeder was benched for being terrible.
  • Jim Plunkett was the backup for the Raiders in 1980. He took over roughly halfway into the season.
  • Trent Dilfer took over when Tony Banks was benched halfway through the 2000 Ravens’ schedule.
  • Roger Staubach was actually the backup to start the year for the 1971 Cowboys. Craig Morton started.

If you want to count Super Bowl losers, that adds Morrall a second time. It also adds Colin Kaepernick, who only played because Alex Smith got hurt.

Even if you don't want to talk about 'super bowl runs'. Before Foles in the McNabb era after the Super Bowl year he kept getting injured. Mcnabb played 9 games in 2005(were 4-5 after 9 games), got hurt and done for the season. Mike McMahon was the back-up and went 2-5 the rest of the way.

Eagles added Jeff Garcia as the back-up for 2006. McNabb got hurt (tore an ACL) in the 10th game. The Eagles were 5-4 going into that game and lost it. Eagles went 5-1 with Garcia to finish the year (granted with Garcia basically as game manager). Won a playoff game and lost a chance to go to the NFC championship by 3 points.

If I remember correctly the Giants won with Hostetler (sp) when Simms went down in the early 90’s.

Earl Morrall for the Colts, too.

Not to mention none other than Tom Brady. He was the backup until Bledsoe got injured early in the 2001 season.

So its more of a security case thing.

Is it possible they want to make the more dangerous Run plays with Mariota especially in the regular season. So Mariota will play.more than the average Backup?

Thx guys as well. All in all it seems not pretty common that a backup rescued a season.
So why would Howie bring a QB in with that Kind of money tag. Not speaking about Mariota only about the money

Because if you don't have a backup QB, and your starter gets injured, you've wasted all the money you spent on the rest of the team.

When Cunningham went down in 1990, McMahon wasn't good enough to carry a team with a historic defense.

To be fair Cunningham hadn't won a playoff game with that historic defense which was why Buddy Ryan was not brought back for 1991. Which was when Cunningham got hurt and tore his knee on like the first drive of the 1991 season.

McMahon actually 'was good enough'. He went 8-3, the problem is he got hurt and missed 4 games during which you had your Jeff Kemp/Brad Goebbel garbage trotted on.

He came in for Randall in game 1 and they won. They were 3-1 when McMahon got hurt in the Redskins game early and they lost that. He then missed the next 2 games that the Eagles lost 14-13, and 13-6. He returned and the Eagles were 3-4 (having lost the Redskins game and those next 2 without him).

The Eagles then went 6-1 in their next 7 games with him starting, but unfortunately that 7th game he suffered multiple broken ribs against the Giants and was done for the year. They finished 10-6 and missed being a wild-card team by a tiebreaker so one more win would have been a guaranteed spot.

So that kinda reinforces having an actual decent backup can matter. It's just that McMahon didn't stay healthy. Had he stayed healthy he may have been able to be Trent Dilfer to the Eagles Defense. (Altho the Redskins that year were likely beating anyone. They lost 2 games and one of them was the final game of the season against the Eagles when they already had clinched homefield so they rested players) Mark Rypien played like a half and then sat-out the 2nd half like it was a pre-season game.

But at the end of the day I don't think any team with 'super bowl' aspirations realistically is signing a backup and thinking they can step in and play the entire season and not have a drop-off.

Anyone who doubts Gardner Minshew will have only themselves to answer to once he's given an opportunity to dominate the league. The problem is a lot of people at the top and behind the scenes don't want him to succeed.

At this point, I have to believe that CJGJ is only a free agent still because he wants a 1 yr deal with the Eagles & Howie wants him cheap for multiple years.

Since CJGJ hasan't played a full season at safety, the league is probably a little skeptical when it comes to a long-term deal.

I think that probably works out to 5th round compensation. Overthecap.com has Dillard's compensation as 5th and he's 3/$29m, this is 3/$24m. The compensatory formula uses AAV. As other FA's sign it's possible this even winds up pushed into the 6th round.
