My guess is 8 years, 40 mil. Trading for his rights gives them the option of offering the 8th year, which no other team can. Fletch might opt to do that for a lower cap hit. Hes going full Holmgren.

It seems like Rangers fans felt AV misused Hayes by putting him into a shutdown role and not utilizing his offensive potential.

Not sure how I feel about that. It's possible his career year is repeatable but AV is now his coach again. Hmmm.

Really not looking forward to more middling 26-year-olds or whatever Fletcher is talking about. That sure sounds like trading for Trouba and trading Ghost or Myers.

Sigh..this is so pre-Hexy Flyers. It's concerning what rippling effect of shit this will produce (overpaying in years/term or both, clogging the C position)

Definitely easy to see Fletch trading key players/picks for short term results to keep the Dick-faced Overlord happy while he bathes in virgin blood.

Ok, now I have coffee in me, here’s what I think:

First off, Hayes is better Scott Laughton and the minor leaguers who were centering our 4th line last year. He can play in all situations and is a pretty solid player. Adding Hayes makes this team better without question.

In regards to the contract, I’m guessing 6 years, 37.5 million, 6.25 million aav. That would be roughly 8% of the cap. By the final year of the deal, the cap will probably be near or at 100 million so that percentage will only decrease. As long as Fletcher doesn’t give him a full NTC/NMC, the contract won’t be a problem.

Lastly, when it comes to blocking kids, I don’t think this signing will be an issue. Even with Hayes, there is still a potential top 9 spot that could be earned as Laughton, Raffl and Hartman could be the 4th line next season. All in all, as long as the contract isn’t ridiculous, this is a solid move that makes the team better.

I have not been able to search the entire thread but maybe someone with better knowledge of the CBA could confirm the language that this tweet is referencing . CapFriendly has said we must offer a 7 year deal at minimum.

The wording is weird, I doubt the CBA specifically states that a player acquired between TDL and June can only be offered 7 or 8 years...

if anything, I would guess it is "no more than 7"

7 years is the max length they can offer Hayes. They can, of course, offer him a shorter term. No one can offer him 8 years now.

Lol, yep. The team has one of the best/deepest prospects pools in the entire league. This year they have the 11th overall pick and three additional picks in the top 75 (41, 65, 72). Meanwhile there are actually some posters bent out of shape over the 5th round pick. Clear proof that some people just need something to complain about.

They still have 9 picks in total

First round 11
Second round 41
Third round 65
Third round 72
Fourth round 103
Sixth round 165
Sixth round 169
Seventh round 196
Seventh round 201

Pretty sure the Flyers will be able to manage without having that 5th rounder considering they have all of those picks to add to an already stacked prospect pool.

I dunno man, that 5th round pick could end up being anything. It could even be Kevin Hayes.

This isnt true. You have to be fostered at the trade deadline to be eligible for 7 years. Flyers can still only sign him for 7 years, we just get exclusive negotiating rights for 3 weeks.

We can't extend him for 8 years

All depends on the deal... if $6m or under and not crazy long it is good.

I mean, C is the biggest need arguably for next year and after Duchene he is the best UFA C available.

I mean, arguably after Karlsson, Duchene and Panarin he is the 4th best skater UFA once age is considered... Skinner is also in that argument, but C is a far bigger need than W.

Well at least we moved on from Simmonds, now that is a signing someone will regret. Hayes shouldn’t fall of a cliff and helps resolve a position of need.

He's not a terrible player and the positives for the lineup are there, but it's easy to be concerned.

This team has not earned the benefit of the doubt under upper management.

Don’t see how it would be less than Nelson so 6x6 seems like the baseline. That’s the unfortunate cost of signing UFAs; bloated contracts.

Unless you think there's an actual chances Fletcher would let Hayes hot UFA at this point, then yes he backed himself into a corner

I'd imagine it's more likely we found out his expectations and figured we could work with it. If he wants too much he'll walk, that's the benefit of trading only a 5th - it doesn't matter.

No, but not being strong enough down the middle can easily cost you a playoff series. Hell, the Flyers probably beat Pitt in the 1st round in 2018 if 18 year Patrick and Filppulas corpse wasnt our 2C/3C combo. They got abused.
Unless one of them could suddenly play goalie, I don’t think so dude.

Paying productive middle 6 forwards $6 million AAV is the new norm, and Hayes is a better player than Nelson so I don't see any issue with it.
