Also, some folks (myself included) are wondering about cap recapture penalties. The word is Lecavalier’s contract does not qualify for cap recapture so his arranged retirement after this season won’t cost the Flyers or Kings anything. For all intents and purposes, Lecavalier is on a one-year deal."

One way in which it would differ from a one year deal is that the Kings do have to currently work on the default that Vinny's contract would be in effect next season for tagging purposes. So that's $2.25m of 2016-2017 cap space consumed. If Kopi gets his rumored $9.75m and adding in the McNabb QO would put the team at about $65m committed for 2016-2017.

plug two holes with one peg?

(I know you know a million times more about this stuff than I do, but is my line of thinking correct?)
But isn't a team allowed to go 10% over the future cap?

So for tagging purposes is that cap the current 71.4 million or is it counted as 74.4 million? Then when the 10% is added in don't those respective numbers become 78.54

Also Bettman said last month that the cap is expected to go up 3 million

Would the NHL now consider the cap to be 74.4 so extensions can be signed?

From TSN article:

Luke called the fit "perfect" - and admitted he was a little surprised to be heading to a top-end team. Last week, after the Flyers lost in L.A., Luke said his teammates remarked how the Kings were their toughest opponent of the season. After 532 career games, he has only played in one playoff series, a number that figures to change in April.

Love hearing other players talk about the Kings like this.

But but the Capitals!!! :sarcasm:

The flyers should have had to trade a 3rd round pick to the kings for taking Lecavalier off their roster. Nobody but the kings would do this deal, it reminds me of Lombardi trading a 1st for Penner. Plus they sent Forbort back to the minors, I rather see him on this team than Luke Schenn. This happened because Sutter won't play rookies.

teams are allowed to got over the cap by 10% in the offseason. So that would open up over $7M of flexibility.

With Vinny if he decides not to retire than that must mean his back is feeling a lot better and he can actual contribute. If he can contribute than that means we have our #3C at a hit below $2.5M which is good. If he can play than Dl can find room for that.

More likely is he is done and retires, and we do not have to worry about any of this but hopefully just focus on who to pick with the 60th OA selection

My take on the trade along with Lombardi's comments...

LA Kings Kill Two Birds With One Stone With Lecavalier-Schenn Trade

Thanks for the article. It's always good to hear Lombardi explain his reasoning on the decisions he makes. The part about negotiating with Hextall was like negotiating with himself is humorous and a bit frightening. :)

If Luke Schenn can jump start his career and the Kings can re-sign him this is a very good trade for the Kings. Doughty+Muzzin+Schenn+Martinez+McNabb are a formidable group of d-men.

could not disagree more about Penner, Forbort and Sutter.
Penner was getting more than 20 G in Edmonton and filled a need LA had at the time. He was a key part of the 2012 cup. As frustrating as he was in the regular season he was worth the price.
I would way rahter see forbort playing big minutes than sitting in the press box or playing a sheltered 10min a game
I have been preaching for LA to get Luke Schenn for a while and think he will fit in perfectly.
This has nothing to do with Sutter. You should be thanking the team defense of Sutter's system for making the kings a top team in the league not slandering him for no reason.

The current year's cap is used until the new cap number goes into effect on July 1st. The offseason cap is boosted by 10% between July 1st and start of the regular season.

There is a special clause for tagging purposes that the 10% boost is available on March 1st. Again solely for tagging. So the effective cap limit for 2016-2017 right now is still $71.4m. On March 1st it will be $78.5m for tagging. On July 1st it will become the new cap figure + 10%, then on Oct 1st or so when the season starts it's the new cap figure.

One unusual aspect of the offseason cap is that teams have to include players that didn't spend the entire season on the NHL roster at a pro-rated amount based on their roster time. And LTIR isn't in available outside of the playing season. Usually that doesn't make a difference but in rare cases where teams have a lot of LTIR money like Philly and Pronger it can cause summer cap crunches even with the 10% cushion.

Odd that they made the 10% increase for tagging effective March 1st and not earlier.

Seriously, how does sending Forbort down hurt him? Now he has a taste of what NHL pace is like and can work on his game. It never hurts to have prospects simmer in the minors and improve, especially D-men. Its a better option than rushing prospects into the league (see the Edmonton Oilers for reference).

Luke Schenn was actually rushed by Toronto as well IMO

Psshhh who cares what players and organizations think? It's all about the pulse of the main boards here at HF. Message board jockeys opinions > NHL players/executives opinions.

IIRC, didn't our fans say we got lucky to win that game and should have lost? Not sure if Luke is just being nice to us since he has to or if our fan base will only accept 108% effort and results daily. Likely both.

Typical HF, where no coach ever plays rookies enough. There's a steady list of rookies that have played under Sutter and the only reason that list isn't longer is because we are a ****ing Cup winning team and everyone knows cup winning teams don't exactly hand the keys to the car to a bunch of kids.

I think every players the Kings have called up the first time and subsequently sent down improved dramatically their next time up. It's probably going to help his game and to be more prepared next time he is called up.

I think Ehrhoff and McBain have played relatively well over the past month or two. The problem is (and I've seen Herby mention this numerous times), the last thing the Kings need is to have one of those two or Forbort playing top 4 minutes if there were an injury. I'd much rather have Schenn mixed in with 2 of those 3 than have those 3 alone.

This, in the event of an injury Schenn is capable of stepping up. Not ideal but capable

WAT?

Toffoli
Pearson
Shore
Weal
Mersch
Andreoff
McBain
McNabb

Muzzin. Voynov.

It can take a bit, it's not all at once, but Sutter plays young guys. He asks a lot of them if they're going to play consistently, but the Kings are also where they are. They're trying to maintain at a certain level.

Lucic-Kopitar-Toffoli
Pearson-Carter-Gaborik
King-VL-Brown
Andreoff-Shore-Lewis
Nolan/Mersch

McNabb-Doughty
Muzzin-Martinez
Erhoff-Schenn
McBain

Quick

Looks like a solid playoff lineup.

i like our chances against anyone this year as long as we stay healthy. CHI is always a dogfight, and WSH figures to be a strong contender as well, but I can't see any other teams that are as well-rounded and that have a similar compete level.
