I don't think the York or Frost summations are fair or accurate.
Uh, who in 2018 declared that they were going all in and the rebuild was over?Frost was a good pick. How he performs in this shit show of a org should not have much of an impact on how the pick should be viewed. York is more fine than good but not someone to give up on. The Boldy/Caufield whatifs are fair.
They traded a second and a third for one year of Braun also.
Things look a lot better if you replace Robertson (x2) with Ratcliffe and one year of Braun. Stankoven with Tuomaaala. Some combination of Lysell, Zellweger, Hutson, Gleb, Casey instead of the Ghost/Risto fiasco (there is another high second rounder out the window this year).
These are just the moves a schlub like me went on record with from his couch at the time of the moves.
They moved around picks like a contending team. They are not a contending team. Less than ideal. Having a pulse on your team and knowing when to push your chips in is a big chunk of the job. Zito is getting killed for his trades but at least that team won the President’s Trophy last season.
What do you expect? Tony thinks he knows hockey because he was a stringer for the Trentonian.I think he's unironically talking about winning regular season games.

Path dependence, once they committed to trying to win in 2018 with G (31), Voracek (29), JVR (29) the core of the team with $24M committed to them, they basically had a 2-3 year window. Be happy they only traded one 1st and a couple 2nd rd picks, the Rangers in the same situation traded (4) 1st rd picks.
Which is why I still wonder about Risto, up to the summer of 2021 Fletcher only traded a 2nd and 3rd (Braun), some late round picks, and no prospects. Hayes was the big move, Niskanen was a bargain. Then suddenly they move out Ghost and Voracek, trade for Ellis and Risto and resign Risto - that sure sounds like a FO driven desperation move. Do something, anything, the window is closing.
Well, they are not a bust for sure, so they are either trending up or down (level, IMO, is synonymous with down)....I don't think the York or Frost summations are fair or accurate.
We actually got the younger player in the deal. That is so not Flyer likeFormer 3rd rd pick, depth for LHV, still young enough to have an outside shot at the NHL.
Zech couldn't buy PT,
Evan Barratt | 6 feet, 188 pounds | 2/18/1999
Where he’ll play this season: Rockford IceHogs (AHL)
2022-23 expectations: Barratt looked like he could be a potential NHL player when he first joined Rockford, but he has struggled with consistency over his first two seasons and has been moved around the lineup. He often played in a third-line wing role last season. He finished with 14 goals and 14 assists in 63 games. For him to have a chance to make the NHL or even be a quality AHL player, he needs to skate with more quickness. He’s entering the final year of his entry-level contract and will be playing for another contract this season. It’ll be interesting to see how Barratt and other prospects are affected by Rockford having a deeper and more veteran team this season.
