I've seen all 3 games so far, as they have been on free TV. Let me say that I will not spend money to watch them. They play the same "system" as the Flyers - they get caved; there is no attempt to skate the puck into or out of the zones. Also, as with the Flyers, the coach prefers the slug veterans who get the choice minutes.
That is generally the way the AHL works. Most teams have well-paid veterans, often on AHL only contracts, who see big minutes because they are the team's better players.

For whatever reason, they are generally not likely to play in the NHL.

If you look at the leading scorers on AHL teams, the majority have received little more than a cup of coffee in the NHL, if that.

The AHL is more of a development league than the KHL or SHL,but all are dominated by veterans for the simple reason that prospects are either so talented they soon depart, or so raw they need a year or two of development to play as well as AHL + players. Whereas someone iike Marody, who scores at a high level in the AHL (but not the AHL playoffs) has gotten his NHL shot and came up short.

A few prospects will blossom after 3 or so AHL seasons, Guorde, etc., but they're rare, and more likely to be defensemen like Dumoulin, because defensemen can better compensate for talent deficiencies with good fundamentals developed through experience.

Foerster is a bit of a mystery to me - was actually far more impressed with Gauthier and Kaplan at development camp - though admittedly that is a small sample size and Foerster did play well for Canada.

Any early impressions from the first few Phantoms games?

So you're not a Flyers fan but you followed the Flyers development camp?

Did you forget which account you logged into?

Lysell has 6 points in 3 AHL games, @BigToe .

I understand that but the Phantoms group of vets suck. The group has been fairly consistent over the last couple years, a period during which the Phantoms have sucked. I say it is time to change that philosophy.

They moved out most of the veterans and replaced them with Marody, Brooks, Belpido, Connauton this year.

So what HC has gone to the SC Finals 3 or 4 times with different teams?
What does it mean to win? I'd say getting to the 2nd rd or better with three different teams makes you a winning coach.

NYR: 4 PO appearances, 2 1st rd exits, 2nd rd, CF finals - that's not winning?
CBJ: 4 PO appearances, 2 2nd rd, then the GM deep sixed the team

Lavi 1 Cup, 2 Finals losses, but took over established PO teams in both Philly and Nashville.
Q, outside of Chicago, coached Florida to two 1st rd exits, St louis 4 2nd rd exits, Col swept twice in the 2nd rd, CF loss

Who knows how good Cooper is, once that core ages, we'll find out.
Penguins have been knocked out of the 1st rd four straight seasons, guess Sullivan coached better when Crosby was younger?

This is classic Flyers in a nutshell -- Tortorella wants Frost to score more so of course he immediately puts him on a line with ND. The Flyers sign these plugs for the 4th line and then first chance they get, start moving up the line-up

Making the playoffs is not impressive at all. And considering how you have hyped Tortorella up into one of the supposed greatest coaches of all time and an underappreciated offensive mastermind (a surprise to everyone including Tortorella, to be sure), merely making the playoffs is a pretty shit bar.

You're selectively and deliberately ignoring vital context all over this post too, so it's pretty clear what you're doing.

Beef land must be a wonderful place, where you make up your own facts and create the world in your own image.

Torts is the right coach for this team, he's resurrected two franchises, and if ever a team needed discipline and focus . . .
Now whether he'll wear out his welcome remains to be seen, but he'll leave behind him a core of better players.
Of course, you need a GM smarter than the one in Columbus, who may be worse than Fletcher.

Everyone remembers your long fantasy descriptions of Tortorella and how his genius would revolutionize everything about the Flyers and everything would be different.

Not his genius (a rare quality) but his 'tude.
And it's early, it take time to break players of ingrained habits.

But the Flyers have been inconsistent, unfocused and have lacked resilience for the last decade.
So I'm all for a good kick in the butt.

Yeah no you went further than just attitude, you tried to paint a picture of him being secretly brilliant offensively

No I didn't, his teams create scoring chances at a high rate, but simply due to an aggressive forecheck which they pursue relentlessly.

It would be nice if we had McDavid, Panarin and Pastrnak, but I think for this team to generate offense, they're going to have to force turnovers off the forecheck, not through fancy machinations through the neutral zone.
