We were meant to lose that game. The idea that we can somehow play a tight-checking game with speedsters on our team is quite ridiculous. Boston, which we seem to be modelling, can get away without an elite PMD, because their playing style is vastly more intimate than ours.
Their game is more North-South and there is a big emphasis to start playing your man non-stop in the neutral zone. The moment you get into their defensive zone, they tend to have you plastered. Carlyle has us collapsing into the defensive zone, and we just don't have the Broadstreet Bully kind of thugs to wear down our opposition.
This fantasy about Gunnarsson stabilising Phaneuf is just ridiculous. Dion looked outright awful with Regehr, and he'd be the same if we didn't have such an explosive offensive unit. On the other hand, both Phaneuf and Regehr played their best with someone who can control the tempo of the game ( Aucoin). Hell, Dion didn't even look good with J-Bo when used together for short periods. He's an all-round guy, isn't a spectacular puck mover and usually stays-at-home like a defensive defenceman even though he isn't that mean. He can make those great timed hits, but he's not as cerebral as Sean O'Donnel. In my opinion, we're probably going to see Gardiner and Rielly supplant Phaneuf in an offensive role if the pairing remains. That would arguably be the biggest waste of $7 million I've ever seen.
