Ill save the hate for the guy who plays no PP, no PK , no crucial minutes and makes 5+Mil.

Kulemin and McClement better walk, Komarov better laugh when Nonis approaches, because we have no room to offer guys fair money when you drop a blank cheque at Clarkson and Dion
That's my view. Dion contributes way more compared to Clarkson.

Ya but he's supposed to be "the guy"
And it appears he contributes nothing to that particular assignment

lets see, miss the playoffs and draft 14th and have dion for 7 more years at 7m cap hit or draft top 5?

lmao is that the choice you put infront of me????, hrmmmm that's a real real tough choice.

and then you'll want to trade the whole team because of the setback and not making the playoffs for a few more years. We still have a chance to make it.

frankly ,the goal he was really striving for this season was a fail and that was to make team Canada
, I think his heart is broke

I was in utter shock when I saw the interview and that was the goal that came out of his mouth, no no not winning the cup, it was him making the big O squad.

Funny thing is that most of the hockey analysts were not prepared to put Phaneuf even on the 2nd Canadian roster lol

Useless, liability out there. Gets man handled by ppl half his size. Can't make simple plays that peewee kids have no problem doing. No effort , no drive no determination. End rant

In a secondary role he could for sure. Be a Bouwmeester to a Petro.

As the leader, captain and #1 D of the Toronto Maple Leafs I can't see him taking us to the finals.

Get real. We've seen how this story plays out. No matter who we get, we will never make it to the Finals. We haven't made it to the Finals for nearly 50 years.

Talented players come to Toronto and wither and die. It's a curse.

Rangers had 54 years between cups and Hawks 49. It'll come eventually.

Who would play all those minutes?
-UFA's don't sign here (except Clarckson for good reasons)
-Gardiner has been traded 5000 times this year on these boards (and he's not able to do that)
-Reilly not ready
-Ranger????

some people have to relaxe about bringing Percy or Granberg. If you guys think Phaneuf plays bad, put those guys out there and see what happens. Without Phaneuf, we would be picking top 5 again.

Having Dion and Picking 11-12 a better situation??

Team defense is the problem, leafs need to add another top pairing dman to bump Gunnerson down into the 4 spot. Call up Burke and see what we need to give up for Giordano.

Riemer
Franson
Biggs
1st 2014

All Burke guys, and a decent package for a pretty good dman.

Giordano- Phanuef
Gardiner- Gunnerson
Gleason- Rielly

One of Kadri or Lupul must go aswell, the second line becomes too much of a liability with them on the ice together. Prefer to see Lupul go. Older, more injury prone and more expensive.

I want to see Gunnerson get traded because he has been here for so long but didn't make much contribution at all. Half of the D group needs the scenery change.

As much as Phaneuf needs to step it up, I think we need Franson gone. He is simply not contributing in any meaningful way. And I'll be honest, I think Dion needs to be taken off the PP. He is not accomplishing anything there. He is not quick with the puck and he isn't shooting anymore...so why is he there? I'd rather see Rielly and Gardiner get more minutes.

All I'll say in defence of Phaneuf, which is become harder and harder, is to remember those 3-days off the week before the California trip.

Even despite having 3 days off, he missed practice on that final day, and the morning skate of the game. Clearly he was ailing and injured and is playing through something.

If Chara or Toews is playing through some sort of injury, they become the poster boys of what real hockey playing men are all about, but because it's Dion people turn a blind eye here - your biases against him do that.

Overall - his leadership, and the overall leadership group of this team, will most definitely be brought into heavy question this summer. Unacceptable to go out the way we did in game 7 last year, only for this thing to free-fall out of control this year.

He has been the team's best shutdown Dman ever since Phaneuf got his generous extension. I remember him being the Leaf's most reliable Dman during the entire 2011-2012 season as well.

We were meant to lose that game. The idea that we can somehow play a tight-checking game with speedsters on our team is quite ridiculous. Boston, which we seem to be modelling, can get away without an elite PMD, because their playing style is vastly more intimate than ours.

Their game is more North-South and there is a big emphasis to start playing your man non-stop in the neutral zone. The moment you get into their defensive zone, they tend to have you plastered. Carlyle has us collapsing into the defensive zone, and we just don't have the Broadstreet Bully kind of thugs to wear down our opposition.

This fantasy about Gunnarsson stabilising Phaneuf is just ridiculous. Dion looked outright awful with Regehr, and he'd be the same if we didn't have such an explosive offensive unit. On the other hand, both Phaneuf and Regehr played their best with someone who can control the tempo of the game ( Aucoin). Hell, Dion didn't even look good with J-Bo when used together for short periods. He's an all-round guy, isn't a spectacular puck mover and usually stays-at-home like a defensive defenceman even though he isn't that mean. He can make those great timed hits, but he's not as cerebral as Sean O'Donnel. In my opinion, we're probably going to see Gardiner and Rielly supplant Phaneuf in an offensive role if the pairing remains. That would arguably be the biggest waste of $7 million I've ever seen.

Carlyle said this of Phaneuf earlier: "...we're going to rest people, we're going to make sure people are healed" and available to play.

Thee is a reason why most of you are not gm material

I know. I'm not smart enough to sign the Gomezs and Clarksons of the hockey world to long-term contracts. Yup. No way am I on par with Kevin Lowe, Garth snow and all the other Einstein GMs in the league. Ho yeah. A real mensa club, those hockey GMs.
