Briefly is not 15 minutes..... I have no idea of why he left the ice....

You are kidding your self if you think that his team mates have not questioned just what he was thinking

 ...Right. I'm sure they were worried sick or angry that he wasn't on the ice for a few minutes.

Saying "enjoy" is a euphemism for entertaining. A shutdown D doesn't need to be entertaining.

ok... he's not a shutdown d

but if you insist in calling him that then there is still a place to appreciate that skill. do you appreciate that skill in Dion Phaneuf? his skill to shutdown?

Before the olympic break he was amazing at that particular skill yes. Saying otherwise would simply be the result of crumbling to mob mentality.

So he isn't a good shutdown dman? Saying otherwise would simply be ignoring the crumbling occurring since the Olympic break.

I think he's earned more rope than what's being given out that's all. He has his critics though, so as soon as he runs into a slump, it's as if he's terrible at everything and always has been.

And today he told us himself why. He's too emotional. To The point of not being able to even give a press conference so how can you expect him to play smart hockey.

3 years of choke now

So you appreciate the fleeting ability to be good for a stretch of games and then lose that skill?

You enjoy the ability of Dion Phaneuf to be good at times and then be the opposite?

Or you enjoy his ability to shut guys down all the time?

You can't have both.

Amazing? What about when the Leafs allowed 7 goals a game like 3 times in a month in January?

7 more years.

He's a good # 3 or 4 IMO.

But he can't play big minutes.

His game breaks down when he gets tired.

Fair enough. As it stands I don't believe he is or ever has been in his Leafs tenure, a #1 dman. Whose fault is that? Not his. Playing him like one may be the only thing that can be done. Again not his fault. Signing to a contract he hasn't earned? Not his fault. Everyone would take that. As the captain however, he has failed and that is his fault. In my 30+ years of watching hockey, and other sports, I've seen some great captains and guys who weren't even captains who brought effort out of teammates they didn't know they had in them. I see that exactly never on this team. I see acceptance for losing from him and every other supposed "leader" on this team. I could care less what is said after games to media. That doesn't win you games.

Last night was disgraceful for more than just the loss. I watched Kulemin have one of the best shifts in a month and not a single player on that bench acknowledged it by a single pat on the back or a shift right after with the same intensity. I saw Lupul and Kadri laughing. Kessel looking pissed. Gleason looking like he just realized how much of a mistake he made. Where is Phaneuf? We make fun of the Habs for being smurfs but it's sad when one of the smallest one of them dwarfs our captain with his leadership

Backes had his way with him...I don't like the fact that our captain shies away from guys like this yet he goes all tough guy on a guy like Conacher who is about half his size.

#3-4 is where EVERYONE in the NHL has him other than a few Leafs fans. Most leafs fans even know that is not a #1 or a Captain.

That was pathetic! He looked like he was having his lunch money stolen at grade school by Backes.

That set the tone for the game... Backes established that Phaneuf was his *****!

lol no it's not. 3-4 would have well over 100 defencemen in the league better than him. You're delusional if you think he's anything worse than a 1B defenceman.

Can you see a team winning a Stanley Cup with Phaneuf as the #1 D? I can't. He'd make a good trading chip, though, and I think the time has come.
