Friedman: Pettersson says he’ll only re-sign if Canucks have successful season

overpaying on contracts in order to keep them isn't a great thing either.
The best goal scorer in the NHL will command a pretty penny. No one has scored more goals than him since entering the league. Not McDavid, OV….no one!

Friedman also says this

It’s important for Canucks fans not to interpret this as an imminent departure. Friedman said Pettersson seems inclined to ensure the team’s potential for success before going all-in.

Friedman ended with:
“One thing I would say to Canucks fans is, don’t take it as he’s not staying. I don’t believe that’s the case. Nothing in my conversation with him said to me that he’s not going to stay there. But I think he wants to make sure that the team, he believes he can win there before he’s going to commit to a long-term deal.”

This is likely just a player who will sign a shorter term contract, which we likely see more of going forward
Quite right, and immediately following the brief interview, Friedman also said:

“Is there a reason to panic here? Like, is he pulling the door on the Canucks?’ No, I don’t believe that,” said Friedman. “I think that he knows his next contract is going to be a big one, wherever it is, and I don’t think he’s worried about that. I just think he wants to make sure that he feels everything is going in the right direction. And I got the sense that he is confident in what they have. He just wants to see the results. And as long as the Canucks do, what he believes and what they’re selling him they can do. I don’t think this is going to be an issue. They know they’re going to have to pay him. I think they are prepared to pay them. They’re prepared to pay him long-term. I think the guy just wants to win and he wants to make sure that it’s going to be there.”

Friedman must get a big kick out of the way so many people respond to his every "thought".

I mean it's as if he were some great guru or something.

The guy thrives off of pure speculation, but it works and gets him paid

This isn’t surprising to most Canucks’ fans. Reality is, if the team doesn’t take a step forward next season, they need to re-examine their strategy and if EP forces his way out, Quinn isn’t going to be far behind. At that point they need to strongly look into an actual rebuild. Until then, Go Canucks Go!

"looks like Toronto is the only Canadian City that can keep good players.

in 3 seasons Edmonton will have no one."

This doesn't seem to be anything new since the interview came out last week. Absolutely no reason to panic or anything, now that we have competent management (I think?)

Time for these guys to put up or shut up. I'm in my optimistic phase of the year so I'm perfectly fine with all of this.

I assume that Canucks would want a at least a

60pt center
Picks
Prospects

Norris+Grieg + Kleven + Senators 2024 1st + Wings 2024 1st?

Ottawa could do it but I don't see it being the best offer the Canucks could get or might harm the Senators more then help it.
--------------

As to the current Canucks getting into the playoffs, I don't really see it happening other then a squeek in.

Yes they have center depth and a better defense but

-Boeser is a gentle breeze from being injured
-Garland isn't preforming well
- Mikeyev isn't that great
-Other then Leker there really isn't any other prospects that are going to be better then the wingers above.

Thats a lot of things to fix even if they go all in at the deadline and are buyers.
Mikheyev is actually a good winger. I agree with the rest.

24 and he needs to be on a winner. Guys a loser. Trade him now for max return. I can see that in your 30's but 24.
Oh, we're still in the mindset that the player have to stick with the club that drafted them, just because they had a pick and said their name? Vancouver fans can get mad at the organization for blowing it while they had him. The player signed for 6 years there. Why does he owe the team anything?

So when the big Canucks homer (forget who) said Kent Johnson would eventually come home to play because he wanted to be in Vancouver was a scenario where he was included in a deal for Pettersson what he had in mind? :sarcasm:

Most fans seem numb to the idea of Hughes/Pettersson leaving. This core hasn’t worked out to this point, time to go full rebuild!

I'm glad Pettersson thinks that way. Being perpetually in a "re-tool" or whatever they wanna call it is dumb. Mediocrity is worse than sucking I hope this forces the Canucks to either S*** or get off the pot so they can do an actual rebuild.

Since 2020 Edmontons win 1 more playoff round than Vancouver.

Since 2012 Edmonton has won 2 more playoff rounds than Vancouver.

These teams are not that far apart, we’ve seen the too end talent frustrated on both ends
Edmonton and Vancouvers division finishes since the first covid season;

EDM: 2nd, 2nd, 2nd, 2nd
VAN: 4th, 7th, 5th, 6th

theyre VERY far apart!!

I've been hoping the Hurricanes can land Pettersson. I'd imagine a package for him would start with Martin Necas and likely include Scott Morrison and a 1st.

Hurricanes have lots of solid prospects and the 60 point young player in Necas that we could trade for Petttersson. Canes could also trade Jarvis but I think the Nucks would prefer Necas after he led the team in scoring last year.

Oof.

But was anyone really expecting him to re-sign there? Even that Kuzmenko term signaled that a full scale rebuild might be on the horizon.

Eh he's been saying this for a couple years now. Nothing new.

If he wants out after all those years of Benning, could you blame him? We've been rebuilding for 9 seasons. It's time to show results. If it takes EP+Quinn asking out for management to actually commit to a proper rebuild and have structure, sign me up.
