Friedman: Pettersson says he’ll only re-sign if Canucks have successful season

This isn’t the worst thing in the world. Would garner a monster package and has no trade protection. The team is certainly better run now than with Benning but who knows.

Package would start with a recently drafted top pick, 1st, additional pieces…

The only thing, if they move EP then would they finally have to rebuild?

This isnt a surprise. More and more young players are being vocal about not wanting to be stuck in rebuilds for extended lengths of time.

This is why I’m concerned with Anaheim. We locked down Terry but I’m concerned with the younger players and other players, that may want out if the Ducks don’t start turning the ship this season. Gibson has already made his intentions known.

Don’t blame Pettersson for wanting to be on a winning team.

Dude wants to win , he's earned his right to dip after his contract if he wants.

Nucks won't rebuild, Aquaman needs to try to make the loffs every year and line his pockets up more , even if the product is bad. He will never announce a rebuild maybe a little baby retool which most canadian fanbases know never amounts to anything

Well we know Zegras is taking the first train to NYC when he gets the chance 😉

It’s very obvious Pettersson hates his time in Vancouver. The body language on ice speaks for itself. To me, this news isn’t surprising. I always viewed him as having one foot out the door. Losing isn’t fun though, so maybe a winning season changes this.
I guess by that logic, both McDavid and Draisaitl are gone from Edmonton.

Pettersson is lighting a fire under Vancouver’s ass and showing some emotion, something most fans want to see more of from hockey players. It’s better than the prototypical “we have a good group” response

Rangers were very high on him in 2017, we should be all over this.
Perhaps a package consisting of...

(Trocheck or Chytil)
+
(Kakko or Lafreniere)
+
(Schneider or Miller)
+
(Othmann, Perreault, or 2025 1st)

the good news is, the team is definitely not interested in a rebuild. so the player and management's goals are already aligned.

All that is left is whether the coach can coax the rest of the players to perform. EP and QH I am not worried at all. The completely overhauled D is the big unknown. Management better make smart decisions and stay ahead of situations, because the alternative will irreversibly impact the owner's pockets.

what this also could mean is that the team's 2024 1st pick is on the block.

Playoffs or he walks. Just guessing

I don't know if the bar for "successful" is set that low to "just" make the playoffs. Making the playoffs would be the minimum but I think he would need to see the team on the ascendency meaning it could come down to a "Mathews dilemma" where Pettersson has to choose a higher salary or leave money on the table to be used to improve the team.

If they don't make it they'll have to rebuild anyways. Sure I guess they could re-up and try for 2 more years after this one until the Hughes/Demko contracts are up, but realistically if they can't at least make the playoffs this year then this core is never going to do it. Selling EP, Hughes and Demko would probably net something like 3 1sts, 3 blue chip prospects, 3 young roster players. They'd be able to get a massive jump on a rebuild.

If the Oilers were missing the playoffs every year instead of being (checks notes) the 6th best team in the league ... sure I would have to think in the scenario equivalent to the Canucks it would be a worrying situation.
When you’re the best player in the league, I don’t think the constant sweeps & second round knock outs is success. And we’ve seen that with their “on ice body language”. The only difference is the timelines when these players have to make a decision

Bottom line is one of the teams is one of the top teams in the league, no one's body language is going to be great right after losing in the playoffs, if someone is tap dancing and smiling out there after losing in a playoff round I would have concerns about their compete level, lol.

The situation Vancouver is in is way, way different, they've bombed season after season.

Any Canucks fan who is upset by these comments is not interested in being a successful franchise. There is absolutely no reason that the coaching staff, management, players, and especially the owner, should be held to a lesser standard than Pettersson himself.

Aquilini is 100% to blame
Exactly! Petey remembers the Benning “shocking reset” after the club had some playoff success. That owner gets his snout into hockey decisions and the club goes the wrong way. Petey is a smart guy. He needs to see it’s the management making hockey decisions and not the owner.
Although the owner did buck up to get tid of Larsen.

Since 2020 Edmontons win 1 more playoff round than Vancouver.

Since 2012 Edmonton has won 2 more playoff rounds than Vancouver.

These teams are not that far apart, we’ve seen the too end talent frustrated on both ends

Taking short term deals will be the trend now for superstars to maximize their Earnings. Like the NBA players, finally waking up and seeing how much money they are leaving on the table when the cap goes up, and still locked in cheap long term deals on bad teams to go with it.

Petts should use his leverage on the Canucks to go out and be competitive.

If they are out of the playoff picture by the deadline, they will rebuild, fuelled by the fans here. Pettersson should get a hefty return that would kick start that said rebuild. I don’t expect a full tear down, but I wouldn’t expect a retool either.

That said on paper Canucks have a decent line up. For whatever reason this team has failed to come out the gate prepared the last 3 seasons. If that happens again, Pettersson is as good as gone.

Either way, a core of Pettersson, Hughes, Miller, Kuzmenko and Demko is a good core. The supportive pieces are largely what’s to blame, caused by the mess that Benning left in regards to the cap. We’ll see if Hronek, Soucy, Cole improve the defensive core.
