Just out of curiosity and there is no indication this sort of deal has been discussed…

What if Ottawa were to offer Gavin Ewles (18yo) and 5th round pick for McCoy? Ewles is one of those guys that bounces between the 2nd and 3rd pairing in Ottawa. He is one year younger than McCoy so likely is there one year longer and you don’t need to spend an OA spot next year on him like you would with McCoy.

Would that “type” of deal be something on the radar?
I don’t think the Petes would make a deal like this. Donovan McCoy will be one of the Petes overage next year and has their captain they will want his experience and championship pedigree to lead the team. As for the specifics of the proposed trade. Peterborough would want a minimum of a 3rd if not a 2nd in addition to the player.

I understand the logic behind keeping him. I don’t think they’d get the player plus a 2nd or 3rd. A serviceable D-Man one year younger has value. To suggest a 2nd, for example, in addition to the player would suggest McCoy’s market value would be a 2nd and 3rd or 4th. I don’t see it in this market BUT I would see it taking that from a PEterborough perspective.

Why would you think that Donovan McCoy would not be worth a 2nd and 3rd or a 4th? Sudbury just got a 2nd, 4th and 6th for Jakub Chromiak who they had to trade. Barrie got a player and 3rd for overage defenceman Braeden Hache and Windsor got a 3rd, 4th and 6th for Jacob Holmes also an overage. The Petes are not going to make trades for all their veteran players with an attitude that they will take whatever they can get for them. It is not a fire sale like some have suggested. Teams are not going get the Petes top players at lower than market value.

That was what I was saying. I don’t think the market bears what you are suggesting when a player that is a #4/#5 type guy as an 18 year old for a middle pairing 19 year old. I can see why the Petes would hold out for that because the player has more value to them than what the market bears. That makes sense and we can agree on that.

From an Ottawa perspective, we get the experience and give up less experience but someone that moves the puck better. McCoy also is better defensively which is what we need more than puck movement and offensive upside. I was looking at it from the perspective of the Petes buying an additional year and getting a middle pick in the trade. Again, I can understand the intangibles being of higher value to the Petes.

I cannot see how this deal will benefit the Petes. I think they would rather have a player who has played his entire career in Peterborough, who has won an OHL Championship and is their captain play for them this year and next than a player with less experince and less potential. The Petes will not likely keep a right defenceman as an overage as they will be strong at that position with Carson Cameron and Liam Ladds being in their 18 year old season. They may consider a trade like this if they could get a 2nd or a 3rd but not a 5th. Ottawa would need to make an offer that would fit Peterborough needs not their desire to keep their 2nds and 3rds.

As I mentioned, I can understand that. I was looking at it fromt he perspective that the Petes have Melee, Lefebvre and Stusks as well as McCoy as eligible returning OA’s. If they can snag an eligible D-Man and keep the other three, they essentially keep four players instead of three. I was looking at it fromt hat perspective.

By the sounds of it, from a Petes perspective, that type of deal would more likely apply to Lefebvre as opposed to McCoy. If McCoy is almost set in stone as the team leader, the scenario doesn’t work.

In many cases there are market values for certain players that don’t align with the value the player has to the team because of certain intangibles that don’t translate on the trade market. McCoy seems to be that type of player. I know we have had discussions on our board about Stonehouse. Now that he signed with Edmonton as a free agent, he is unlikely to return as an OA so it makes the discussions and comparison quite moot but we had some of the same viewpoints as Petes fans do with McCoy. Sometimes that veteran presence and leadership specific to the market they are in has a value that quite simply doesn’t have as much meaning to other teams so it makes it really tough to quantify for the seller.

As y’all know I hate trades because I bond with these kids. I feel like a Mother Hen and I hate to see them leave the fold-

But if we have to trade (and I guess we do ) please trade them to teams in the West !

It’s too painful to make trades with teams in the East.

Lardis gets a bee in his bonnet everytime we play him and tortures us -
We have to play against Lockhart 5 more times this year -I can’t even imagine what he will do to us

Send them West !

Not at all. Petes are much more likely to trade Sztuska and that will set them up with Lefebrve, Melee and McCoy as OAs next season.

I would entertain something like Mayer for Joshua Brady and a draft pick

I think you can get more than that for Mayer.

What do you think the value is for Sztuska at the moment? Having a pretty good year. Goalie market is hard to determine.

Likely. I am a big fan of Brady and would think the pick is likely a 2nd. I feel like he’s gunna end up in Ottawa still though…

We are trying to figure out what the goal for Ottawa is this season. Ottawa is most likely a division winner by default. But is that enough incentive to make even a half hearted run at the Conference in the playoffs? The division is lame duck. Ottawa has beaten Sault twice, Guelph and lost to London in OT. They “seem” to have the chops to do it but after punting what seemed like 100 picks last deadline on Mintyukov and Morrison, is it responsible for Ottawa to punt picks again? And, if they do, is it responsible for them to shop at the top of the wish lists? I’m not sure the answer to that question is yes.

Yeah… it’s tough to say honestly. I’d imagine there will be conditional draft picks involved that would kick in should be return as an OA next season.
Feel like the Petes might be able to get more for Bowen especially with him being an '05, but he should be here longer term

I think it depends on what the goal is next year. I assume it is another rebuild/reset year. IF that is the case, Sztuska isn’t meaningful as an OA. Bowen has 2 more years including an OA year. So, depending on how you project out your goaltending past next season, that, to me, needs to be the deciding factor. You want to ensure you have goaltending the year after next. If you trade Bowen because he is more valuable as an ‘05, you have to ensure you have something for 25-26. Do the Petes have a drafted goalie that likely fits that bill? If not, even drafting one this year doesn’t ensure he would be ready to carry the load as a 17 year old.

In an off-season interview Mayer seemed to have made Ottawa and Sudbury his preferences.

Kingston now seems capable of leading the division too.
It’s still early, but I’m beginning to think that I may have underrated the eastern conference or overrated the western conference prior to the start of the season.

Well that is exactly it. Bowen would definitely have more value, but in this case I don' t think that means they should trade him. Should be Bowen's crease the next 2 1/2 years.

There are a couple teams that need to improve their goaltending. They are more pretenders than contenders. He likely would be in a tandem situation on those teams. The Petes don’t need a goaltender and I am not sure if they could get a skater for him. If it is draft picks only I would expect a minimum of a 3rd and 4th or 5th.

Who knows? The landscape could change dramatically. Missy is settling in about where I figured they’d be, around 3-4 in the East. Petes will tumble a bit and open the door for Ottawa. Ottawa has played a lot of the good western teams already so they have a few out of the way.

I don’t think Kingston is a serious threat. Their defence and goaltending is suspect and when they line up against up tempo teams, they tend to fold. They do have picks in hand so they could actually do something this year and be a player if they choose to. I think they are more likely to tinker a bit.

Is the West artificially better than the east based on perception or on ice results? Who knows? It is a little too early to tell.

the big problem is the impressive teams tend to be the ones that loaded up last year and are carrying that swagger into this season. Fine but most will sell. Are the teams we are pointing to as the true contenders that good? I really don’t see one team head and shoulders above right now. Even Kitchener is suspect. Half of their goals come from their top 4. Is that sustainable? Can a team have two 50+ goal scorers? If they expose a gap, can they truly fill it? They seem better this year than last, go figure.

It is a very odd season. Confusing is an understatement.

In an off-season interview Mayer seemed to have made Ottawa and Sudbury his preferences.

I really can’t see Ottawa sliding in there. Sudbury has to have the inside track on that.

I think if Ottawa does something, it is more likely to be with Zito coming home…or staying home So to speak considering he is chilling in Ottawa figuring out his next steps. Problem is I assume his conditional picks (3rd and 5th) are for him returning as an OA. I’m not sure Ottawa will go there.

I’m very surprised by the Steelheads start. I thought Leenders could be the real deal, but playing as though he is among the best at 17; I did not see that.

I’m not really surprised the west is wide open. OS might still add the bit (D) I expected and Kitchener sell less than anticipated as they are in pretty good shape and can wait to sell big with Rehkopf & Adonovsky next season. I still think Flint is a buyer.

The Petes have Easton Rye who was drafted last year and who is 17 years old. He is currently on the Petes roster. He was expected to be the backup this year before we got Zach Bowen. However when Bowen was out earlier in the season they played Liam Sztuska in all the games in a three in three weekend.

They also have recent draft pick Masen Johnston playing for U18 Petes who they are very high on. I think Sztuska will go.

The Rye family can’t be happy having Easton playing Jr.C right now…

and i’m sure even less happy this week once it was revealed that Rye didn’t get a championship ring…
