A few comments on last night's game.
Sorry I didn't post something sooner; I actually just woke up after that game put me to sleep!

- For most of the game it looked like a team ravaged by a flu bug with 5 regulars out versus a young team coming off an OHL championship who was winless in 7 games. Tuesday night didn't help the intensity level either.

- the speed missing from the lineup with Avon out was very apparent, especially on the PP
(btw.....a nice article on the league website about Avon)
Hometown hero Avon embracing leadership role in Peterborough – Ontario Hockey League

- The Petes went from a lineup of 13 forwards and 4 Dmen dressed last week (with Lockhart playing D to make it 12F and 5D) to a lineup of 9 forwards and 8 Dmen dressed last night (with Leskovar playing F to make it 10F and 7D)

- Every team has to deal with injuries and illness but the timing of this flu bug and the toughest stretch of games for the team this season is not ideal

- Simpson stopped 32 of 33 shots, improving his league leading stats to 2.28 GAA and a 0.925 Save%.

- Purdeller played with more confidence, scoring his 2nd goal of the year and taking two penalties......just need more of the former and less of the latter Tommy Boy!

- nice to see guys like McCue, McCallum and Lefevbre get more minutes

- I kept a close eye on Spearing (Petes) and White (Ham). Last night was White's first game of the season after being out with a broken orbital bone. Spearing was paired with Guryev most of the night and was steady.
If I'm Oke I'm dealing Spearing + picks for White. White's skating ability and skill in creating offense is something that would be make the Petes attack so much more dangerous.

- Heading west tomorrow to visit Windsor, Flint and Saginaw for a 3 in 4. None of these games will be easy - I'll be thrilled if they can get 3 of 6 points.
Serious question and I may be way off base here… but would you guys do JVV (+ Spearing if they wanted him) for Morrison and White?

You’d have to think that would make us the favourites.

Not sure Hamilton would ever take that deal. I do think Gavin White would be a very good add though.

I dunno a 16 year old first round pick usually only goes for the high end players in the league… trading one for two guys with half a season left seems risky but I think I would do it for those two. JVV + picks

It's clear that the Petes are still ailing from the flu. Even with having the lead twice on the road, Coach Wilson has them playing in a defensive shell which only works for so long. We should be pushing for an insurance goal but our offense was weak with few scoring chances overall. In our own end we were chasing the puck all night rarely gaining possession and when we did get the puck there was poor clearing attempts. Too many icings as well. And this was all due to the guys feeling the effects of the flu I have to assume. Handed that one right to Windsor and unfortunately nothing to show for a decent road effort.

Simpson stands on his head and we loose? Avon on ice for all 3 goals against floating around too high in his own end again? I guess Wilson cant see this??Brutal

Well, that was a frustrating loss. Brutal turnovers resulting in goals against.

I’m not convinced this team is better than NB, Missy or Ottawa yet. If it wasn’t for Michael Simpson… we would be in trouble most nights.

It's a really brutal part of the schedule that dovetailed with the flu going through the team. A road trip like this coming right after three games in four nights. The OHL scheduler should give his head a shake lol.

Yeah, the Windsor flu. Lots of guys get sick when they have to play at the WFCU, totally understandable. It's an intimidating place for the visitor. ;)

Your team is good, Windsor had to move the puck quickly to keep possession. Most of the time a Pete was right on the puck carrier at all times making it difficult to get quality chances. It's my 2 cents that the Pete's look like a contender, one of the tougher opponents we've faced so far. I wouldn't let a 1 goal loss on the road to the best team in the West sour your opinion of the squad, you guys definitely belong in the discussion this year.

A few comments on tonight's game....

- Nice to see a "fuller" lineup but, given that Jax Dubois, Nick Lardis and Jonathan Melee were game time decisions and 3 of 5 guys coming back from the flu, this full lineup was still nowhere near 100%

- Let's give the Petes some credit......Windsor is the top team in the West and the Petes almost pulled out a win.

- Simpson was great AGAIN.......it's nice to think that he will be able to keep the Petes in every game going forward

- the giveaways and way too many icings were disappointing but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt for their lack of sharpness

- If all of the Petes players had the same jump that Konnor Smith (hometown Windsor boy) had they would have won for sure.....would have been awesome if he scored on his partial breakaway after being in the penalty box .

-I was impressed by Chase Lefevbre's game tonight. He didn't play a lot but he won 2 big defensive zone face-offs versus Windsor's top line after his line was stuck on the ice after icings at the end of long shifts.

- speaking of Chase, Stillman gave a good interview between periods - well spoken

- The Petes are most effective when they get sustained forechecking pressure and tonight they just didn't

- tomorrow is an off-day before facing Flint/Saginaw on Sat/Sun.......can they get 3 of 4 points?

They can can only get healthier over the weekend so we have a chance to get some points. We're not focused on scoring goals as a team even though we have some good offensive players. Now that we're healthier, we really need to work on offensive zone entry and puck possession.

Anyone know if Your TV is showing the game from Flint tonight?

Yes they are. Too bad they don't update it on Cogeco listings.

Are the Petes leaving Guryev in Flint and taking Othmann with them?
That's the rumour. Apparently Flint brass is done with him and his antics. Should be the best player in the league so the talent is unquestionable. But so was Ryan Merkley's. If the trade does go through, we'll see if Rob Wilson earns his money!

I think maybe the team was told about the trade between periods......they seem to be playing with a little more life! Goal by former Firebird, Panwar, to tie it and Robertson with the go ahead goal. 2-1 Petes.

Here is my guess at the lineup once Othmann joins the team.
Still have an open OA spot!

Othmann
Robertson
Lockhart
Avon
Panwar
Stillman
Lardis
Dubois
Purdeller
Dezoete
Melee
Page/ Van Volsen

Smith
Zanetti
Spearing
McCoy
Mayer
Guo

Nice road win for the Petes and a good game again from Sztuzka. It was weird that Guryev was listed in the starting lineup on Petes Twitter and then at game time he's sitting out. Then the rumours about Othmann started swirling. Anyway the Petes played well for the most part and pick up the extra point. If we do have Othmann that is some much needed goal-scoring as we seem to struggle with finishing after applying pressure in the other team's end. Just before Panwar's goal I was pissed about Stillman's turnovers and then he gets a nice assist on Panwar's goal. Robertson's goal was weird. I think the Firebirds defenseman shot it in his own net.

I know we don't agree on this but I think Guryev is also a supremely talented/dominant OHL player (when in the lineup), I don't think it's a big change in that respect for Petes coaches - BUT they never did reel Guryev in, so....

I'd say he definitely has the capability to be a dominate OHL player, he's probably the strongest player in the league. Don't think we've ever seen that for a consistent stretch though (mostly because of suspensions)

Here is the Petes updated draft pick cupboard. Anyone know what the condition was on the Erie 2024 3rd from the April pick swap?
