A statement win by the Petes over the 67s. A few thoughts.....
- Made the trip to watch these East division powers battle it out in person. It was fast and physical.
- The 67s, rested and hosting the Petes who played the night before at home, outshot the Petes 40-22.
Ottawa with 12 shots and two goals before the Petes registered their first. Bus legs and 2 in 2 certainly didn't help the Petes. They were physical from the puck drop but unfortunately the 67s were faster at the start and capitalized on a bad rebound and a PP.
- Simpson was outstanding, making a number of tough saves. Anyone who was questioning his status as the #1 goalie on a contending team has received their answer.
- Lockhart (Kanata), Mayer (L'Original), Dubois (Ottawa) and Melee (Rockland) all had a contingent of family and friends cheering them on.
Lockhart needs to play all of his games in front of family and friends. IMO, it was his best game as a Pete.
1 goal, 2 assists and delivered more hits in one game than he had in total in the previous 11 games.
Well deserved 1st star choice.
Mayer with 3 assists and was a physical presence all night. The dive by Stonehouse in front of the Petes net early in the 3rd, which earned Mayer a 2 minute cross-checking penalty (huh?), was world class.
Dubois with the empty net goal and was doing Jax things - hard to play against and winning 56% of his faceoffs.
Melee didn't show up on the scoresheet but he was aggressive and physical all game.
- The 67s were not prepared for (at least not very happy with) the Petes physical play. The number of times
an Ottawa player would leave an after-whistle scrum looking beleaguered with his helmet tilted sideways or right off was too many to count.
- Panwar had a great night - no points but a +2 and a relentless checker, blocking shots on the PK. I'm fine with Panwar's game. He is developing chemistry with Avon & Stillman and his speed creates space and turnovers for them.
- Speaking of Stillman, he was solid all night. He was gritty and dangerous all night - hard to play against (I'm sensing a team identity here). He was physical but didn't take a penalty - that's who he needs to be. He scored the winner on a great play, stealing the puck at the Petes' blue line then pulling away from Mayich to go in alone on Donoso
- Looking forward to 6 remaining games between these two teams, including a home and home in the last week of the regular season - March 23 & 24
