The coaches must know and have known that Guryev has some skill and I have said this for over a year now, Guryev has long needed to be corralled into playing good hockey. Aside from his big frame, Guryev is a good skater, passes well, exits the zone well and even has a good shot which I know because I've seen him shoot (not often because he doesn't shoot much) and he has a heavy low shot. He has all the ingredients to be a top defenseman on the Petes but Wilson and company have apparently not been able or willing to direct Guryev to just play the game so his team can win. The big hits are not working.

If Wilson is telling Guryev to stop the high-risk hits and Guryev keeps running at guys anyway, then Guryev has to either be benched or traded for a bag of pucks.
Guryev has the foundational skills, but the generally reckless (and sometimes downright dangerous) play means officials will always be looking to make a call on him, and almost never in his favour.

No one has reeled him in as a player in minor hockey, Jr A, or OHL. What is he at now — 35 PIM in 6 games, 3x 5 min majors, 3x fights, 1 or 2 suspensions? So is this a coaching issue? 🤔

Guryev is not only player with discipline issues there are many selfish penalties? This is on the coach , these penalties and suspensions hurt the team! Wake up Wilson

Actually yes he control discipline! He can bench players take ice time away or sit them in stands?

We saw enough examples last year, he didnt address it then either? Lol

From The Examiner.
"Guryev is having a difficult time staying away from suspensions with his physical play.
........said Petes GM Mike Oke. “We’ve addressed it with Artem and reminded him about these types of hits as well as all of our players and we’ll move forward."

“Artem’s skill-set is such that he plays a physical style. It’s making sure that you manage that style and play within the rules as they are permitted. We know and Artem knows if you’re in a situation where you make contact with an opposing player’s head you’re running the risk of a penalty and potential supplemental discipline. We don’t want to see anyone get injured whether it be our player or an opposing player,” said Oke."

So those who feel this is on Guryev appear to be right but then again , he's a teenager and from Russia (the new wild west lol) so there are going to be some limits to what he can learn, un-learn. Fortunately another kid who has had a few suspensions and penalties for dangerous hits, Konnor Smith, seems to have gotten the message..

On a positive note the Petes won a third game in 2.5 days and showed grit. Also Dezoete is better this year isn't he? and is currently leading the team in plus/minus.

This is the move I referred to earlier on… clearly didn't work out with the Petes but glad to see he’s found a spot to play in the OHL.

Has he attended Pete’s camp in the past?
Marko has not attended any Petes camps as far as I know.
He is an 04 who was chosen in the 12th round of the 2020 draft and there was no camp after the draft (COVID).
He ended up playing in Sweden during that cancelled OHL season and has been playing there ever since.
It will be interesting to see how his game translates to the OHL.

Petes vs Soo tonight and then vs Ottawa tomorrow night. This being the only two games for the Petes means they likely run with Simpson in net both nights. With Soo, the Petes have to score early and keep up momentum all game to take load off the top forwards and save some energy for a big test Friday night.

Why would they play the same goalie back 2 back
The Petes have done that before playing Simpson back to back games. Stuzka is our back up and has played well in a limited role. Not saying they won't play Stuzka tonight but my guess is that, given how tight the East is right now, need wins and there are better odds with Simpson.

Time to move on from him. Can’t do this all season while he’s using up a OA spot
All in good time, but in the meantime guys like Guo and Leskovar are getting more ice time. Same thing at forward.......with Purdeller out guys like Lefevbre and McCue are getting ice time. This is helping the young guys develop and strengthens the depth of the team. I would be in a bigger rush to upgrade Spearing and fill the open OA spot if the Petes were struggling but they are in a nice groove despite having Purdeller, Spearing and Guryev out.

The Petes are improving as guys get a better handle on the systems and play more consistently with the same linemates.
Great night for a number of players:
Lardis with a goal and 2 assists +3
Lockhart with 1 goal and 1 assist +3
Dubois, centering Lardis and Lockhart, wins 25/34 faceoffs and is +2
Smith and Zanetti each score their 1st of the season

Let's see if they can keep the momentum going in Ottawa.
The 67s won't go 68-0 so the Petes might as well hand them their first loss of the season just to end the suspense

That was a dominant performance last night. The Soo are a very physical team but the Petes pushed back well, and smart.

Big shout out from me to Konnor Smith who played well (scored!), dished out a bunch of hits and most importantly didn't get sucked into any nonsense. The Greyhounds were after him after a couple big (clean) hits and he was able to skate away and not take a bad penalty or suspension.

I think if he can keep playing that way, with the physical style but making sure he stays in the game/on the ice, he can push his draft stock up nicely, that's exactly what scouts want to see.

I hope Guryev was taking notes!

Spearing doesn’t bring enough when he plays anyways to warrant a OA spot on a contending team in my opinion.

Just need him available for the playoffs. They wont need him to make them, just will need him once they get there. They dont have many defenceman that are really good in there own end, but Shawn is. Why hes the captain. Panwar is the overager im worried about. He hasnt looked good at all here. 2 goals and 4 points in 9 games for a skill OA forward? Thats not good

Panwar is an all-situation player. I don’t think he was acquired for the PP and lead the team in points.

He needs to be over 0.40 points per game playing in the top 6 every game with top linemates. Hes a fine 2way C but its not like hes goign to win a selke award. Id rather Dubois for that role over Panwar and he doesnt take an overage spot and is better on facefofs

Dubois & Panwar are not too 6 scoring types. They can be top 6 TOI in a lot games though. Panwar is strong on face-offs. Panwar (LW/C) & Dubois (RW/C) should be reliable complimentary players that can play lines 2-4, PK, protecting late leads …if a checking line of Panwar-Dubois-Stillman can be had when the roster is finalized, the Petes will be in great shape.

Agreed. But you cant waste an overage spot on a 3rd line C when you have Dubois whos younger and alrtaedy a better 3rd line C

Everything that Panwar does good I tihnk Dubois does better. Why do we need Panwar? Cut your losses and go get Morrison and a overage goalie

But he hasn’t shown he’s capable of playing long stretches of hockey yet? He’s in and out every other game he can’t be relied upon to make it thru multiple rounds of playoffs
