We are similar in talent to North Bay but the difference is that the Battalion are better in thier own end. They take away space and passing/shooting lanes so that the Petes have nowhere to go. By contrast, the Petes defense looks a little disorganized despite the experience we have back there. Guryev has his 2nd fight in 2 games after he went after NB's captain Arnsby. It started when Arnsby took a cheap shot at Guryev along the boards and Guryev lost his sh**. THough I'm not estatic about Guryev's ongoing shenanigans, I am more concerned with Mayer and Smith who seem to have not progressed from last year. Not sure which coach works with the defensemen but this is an area of concern that might be exposed even more with the back-up goalie Sztuska in net.

Not a convincing 3-2 win in the Soo tonight. We need to improve a lot pretty much everywhere to be top four this year in the conference. At this point, unless there is a cold going around the team or something I don't know about, I think the quality of the coaching has to be up for discussion. Not many here have been critical of the coaching since Wilson took over but I think it's fair game now. Still early in the season of course and we're missing both Dubois and Purdeller (who I think is going to be good judging from the limited times I saw him play) but geez, we should be better right now. Good takeaways from tonight's game: Sztuska was pretty good, there were no dumb penalties by either Guryev or Smith and judging by last few games, Avon keeps getting better every season.

Not sure when Purdeller is back from injury but with him and Dubois out, it pushes other guys up the lineup. This forward group is not nearly as strong as it will be.

The defense does concern me as well. Spearing is a good leader and shot blocker but IMO he is not good enough to be an OA Dman on a contending team. He will need to be upgraded.

Simpson has been solid and congrats to Sztuska picking up his 1st win.

Still a logjam of bodies with 8 Dmen and 15 forwards (once Zack Lewis, Sam McCue, Dubois and Purdeller are back from injuries).

Lots still to happen to this team between now and the trade deadline.

What Petes center lost the faceoff cleanly in the Petes end with a couple of minutes left in the third period that led to the Hounds tying goal?

It was Robertson. He hung his head after that, clearly felt badly.
Robertson is generally pretty strong on faceoffs but you can bet with almost certainty that Jax Dubois would have taken that one if he was in the lineup.

Great to see a 27/29 performance and win for Sztuska, who a couple people here mercilessly dumped on all preseason.

Michael Simpson deserved better outcome in Sudbury game horrible puck management in our own zone! Good lord a one handed push on the puck in our own end in front of our net? Brutal Simpson bails us out again. Then Sudbury scores , Wilson needs to figure out who is responsible in our own zone up front!

At this point it looks like the early predictions for the Petes being top in the East Conference were off the mark. Top four teams win 2 of 3 on road trips not lose 2 of 3. Right now we look like a team that will finish 4th at best but probably 5th or 6th. This is on the coaches who really need to address defensive zone coverage and offensive finish.. Our top forwards looked mediocre all weekend and I assume it's because they are playing SH and PP plus regular minutes on a long road trip. On the plus side, we came back from 3-0 and got a point. Robertson hit the post in OT (groan). But we never should have got behind 3-0 to start with.

totally agree with everything you said i just scratch my head at times why does Coach Wilson not call a time out? ? its 2 zip early wake your team up, or not??

McCue is injured, otherwise he would have played in Sudbury

The biggest worry for me is that Simpson has been pretty good, and the team is still giving up a lot of goals against. What is going to happen when Simpson has a rough stretch if this is what it looks like when hes playing good? Still a long time to figure thinsg out but looking more and more like JVV will needed to be tradewd at the deadline to upgrade big

Not worried… they’ve played 7 games. Still time to develop chemistry and lock in the systems coach Wilson is trying to run.

So many questions still to be answered:

1. Who will they add as a 3rd OA, what position, and when will it happen?

2. Will they upgrade the OA position held by Spearing at some point? Will the upgrade be a Dman or forward?

3. Is Purdeller high enough quality to play in the top 6?*

4. IMO, the Petes will need to add an experienced BUG as insurance in case Simpson is injured or struggles, but will it need to be an OA (Brochu, Lennox) or can it be an 03 IMP?! (*Zhigalov)

The answer to these questions will affect possible targets
There is certainly a possibility come trade deadline time that JVV gets dealt........If it comes to that, I'm hoping it's a deal for someone like Wright, Wyatt Johnston or Mailloux - but there are still so many twists and turns ahead.

That would be the same for every team though. The teams who are scoring against us now also still havbe time to develop chemistry and lock into there systems. But most of the Petes have been here multiple years now or are veterans in the leageu. We should be picking up systyems faster then most teams

If i guessed id say the OA is a forward. Agree on the backup goalie but none of the goalies you named would be a backup. If they got any of them simpson would be the backup.

If your the GM would you take the bad press hti that Mailloux would come with? Youd be openly saying that winning is more important then being a bad human being

Really anywhere is good. It's not like the fans here get rowdy and chirp opposing fans lol

If you want to sit somewhere with in-seat food/drink service you could go to the South End Club section (aka the Restaurant end). Usually there are lots of open seats to choose from, so if you have a preference for what view you like, you shouldn't have any problem getting a good seat.

The petes are a big physical team, when they are playing well they have the best D group in the league and in my mind it doesn't include Spearing. They seem to lose puck battles and could use a physical forward as well. Goaltending isn't at the level needed for them to go on a run. Saw Pudeller in Cobourg in pre season and didn't hink he was bad, fresh off the plane I think
