Thibodeau's 2nd goal last night is how the Petes should be playing. Enter the other team's zone, pass the puck and then go to the net fast for a return pass or rebound. Score a goal. Keep it simple. We have too many guys trying tricky plays or trying to go through the whole opposing team themselves. Our defense has to stand up opposing forwards at our blue line not allow them to walk in. Skate hard and work hard. Simple hockey.

It's frustrating watching the D so often stand around and watch the opposing forwards go to the net, then react when it's way too late. Seems to happen at least a couple of times a game.

Anyways, I'll say a 6-2 Petes win tonight.

Hard to say Purdeller has played well when he hasn’t scored a goal in the last 22 games. I said this before on a contending team your 2 import players have to be really good if you’re gonna use 2 roster spots on them.
IMO, it's not really fair to judge Purdeller by his numbers.
He is an import trying to adjust to a new country, new teammates and a new league.
He missed the first 12 games of the season.
He has never seen top 6 minutes.
I think he is getting more comfortable and can put up better numbers in the right circumstance.

The lack of Russians/Belarussians in the CHL draft meant that the Petes 15th overall pick was watered down compared to past years. As far as trading for a better import at the deadline, it was easier for Ottawa to deal for Mintyukov because they had an empty OA spot - Purdeller could have used his NTC. We see how it's been tough for some of Othmann, Hayes, White and Beck to adjust - it would be that much harder for an import if they traded for one IMO.

That doesn't really hold up when he had a nice run in November/early December and now has gone completely silent. I have to think Chase Lefebvre could put up more than one point in the last 22 games were he given the same opportunity as Purdeller.

In terms of lines, I'd be putting Stillman in the top 6 for a bit of a run and balancing the top 9 by dropping a couple guys down, probably Beck since he's not been able to find a spot to click anyway.

Avon - Robertson - Stillman
Othmann - Dubois - Lockhart
Hayes - Beck - Melee

Robertson, Othmann, Hayes shoot. Avon, Lockhart, Beck make space/plays with their smarts, skating. Stillman, Dubois, Melee forecheck hard.

Or something like that. Just more balanced and more ice time for Stillman who consistently competes

It just made no sense to draft him if they knew he wasn’t gonna play top 6 minutes. Should of drafted a defenceman a clear area of need

Should Wilson try the blender again?
Those top 6 haven't formed two lines that are both clicking at the same time yet.

I know Othmann scored a hat-trick the other night but he drives me crazy.
Why the between the legs passes?
If he is trying to surprise the opposition with the unexpected, I wish he would only do it close to the opposition's goal. And the pass back to Sztuska last night looked cool but wasn't necessary.

He may need to spend time on the 3rd line.

The blender it is and Othmann takes a seat.

You know -I thought Othmann looked injured after a hit late in the third .
He wasn’t himself -jumping up right after like he usually does

Your Goalies cant stop a shot. It cost you last week against Hamilton, almost Niagara. Kingston, Stuk was bad and tonight Simpson was terrible again. You can see it in the players faces, especially the third, they were trying to stop all shots. You can see it on the bench, their heads just drop. Should be able to win with scoring 5 or 4 a game. This team is in trouble if goalies dont get it together.

It’s actually embarrassing to be losing to teams who sold at the deadline when you went all in these games shouldn’t be close this team wont make it past the second round
The first round they will be lucky to get past this team is under performing and being out worked by teams that all sold at trade deadline ? Embarrasing for sure, they seem to be getting worse?

Simpson has been struggling lately no doubt. Take away the London shutout and he has been shaky and as inconsistent as we have seen him. All signs would would point to Wilson getting fired for this underperforming but it’s not gonna happen. This is the team, this is the coaching staff. Love it or hate it but they’re gonna go down with the ship no matter what that means

Lets not get on the players. They didnt get outworked. Last night they outplayed Kingston, tonight they outplayed Oshawa. Look at some of the previous posts from tonight, They were dominating the game and play. The REASON they lost was goaltending. Plain and simple.

That'd be letting the players off the hook pretty big. Petes 3rd line was really good. Their top 6 did absolutely nothing 5-on-5 (or even on 5-on-4 PPs) the entire game, against a very young D-core and a backup goalie.

1st Gens goal: NHL 1st rounder Stillman gets walked by the 2nd youngest player in the league for his 1st ever goal

3rd Gens goal: Avery Hayes gets a chance to clear, doesn't, then leaves the zone early trying for a breakaway and his man is open in the slot and scores.

4th Gens goal: brutal turnover for Gauvreau up the middle right to Roobroeck, he scores unassisted.

5th Gens goal: Ritchie dangles Spearing to get to the net for the initial shot, then beats Mayer to the rebound to tie the game

7th Gens goal: Avery Hayes with a wide open one-timer chance in the slot and he misses completely, Butler grabs stand scores into the empty net

And with 3:18 left during a big scrum Owen Beck grabbed the puck and shot it into the Gens net, which is a penalty 10/10 times. He got supppppper lucky the ref didn't call that. Would've been an all-time stupid penalty to take with 3:18 left in a 1 goal game. Couldn't believe anyone would do that, let alone a guy who's with a new team and struggling

There's a lot going on, you can't put it all on Simpson to be sure. He still has the best save percentage among qualified goalies. As GU outlined, there were breakdowns on a lot of plays. At the same time, he was not good at all tonight, Roorbroeck and Ritchie goals... Woof. He wasn't good last Sunday either.

There are fundamental problems though.

For one, let's just say it, Beck has been awful. He was brought in to be a difference maker and he's done nothing.

The line that worked (Avon Robertson Lockhart) isn't working anymore and neither are the new ones, so yep, all the skill in the world in the top 6 but not clicking.

I'm not going to get into the D, I do think for the most part they were let down by Simpson tonight.

Bottom line, you can't change the players anymore, can't change the GM, can't change the goalie, so either you continue muddling through this and hope it gets better or...

Not doing season tickets next year. Sorry but I don’t need the grief. Love the Petes but don’t like a missed opportunity like we had this year. Might have been better to keep everyone we traded? Coaches cant coach all these big egos I guess. They’re kids after all so it’s all good. Go Petes.

You can change the goalie mid game though. I would have yanked Simpson after the 4th goal.
