Petes nearly got goalied again. They need to finish better. Still not completely in sync but they did have 65 shots.
Curious thought experiment I had tonight - the Petes are deep in the playoffs and are in a tie game, who are the top 4 D you want out (no bottom, this is meant to be a positive).
For me:
1. Zanetti - and his return obviously what sparked this. Just very good at both ends.
2. Mayer - the only other guy I think you can consider a real two way defenseman. Good offense, made the interception and pass that put tonight's game away for the Petes in his own end.
3. White - hopefully at some point he's top of this list and I thought he was really good tonight but full body of work in Peterborough this is a sell out for offense move with some risk.
4. McCoy - almost the opposite of White, he's not scoring or setting up the winning goal but they're likely not giving it up either. His plus- minus (bad stat generally but not necessarily for this scenario) would maybe say he should be higher.
I'd have to agree......
I've been impressed with McCoy's play since the Xmas break - very composed when handling the puck and more consistent overall.
White is an absolute game changer - what a skater! He creates so many offensive chances and quickly puts the opposition on their heels when he has the puck.
Mayer is solid at both ends.....with White as an offensive weapon on the back end there is less pressure on Mayer to attack; he just needs to pick his spots.
Zanetti is rarely out of position and is an all-round great Dman.
Here's a question though.......If everyone is healthy do the Petes dress 7 Dmen for playoff games?
The 7th Dman and 12th Fwd won't be playing many minutes come playoff time but dressing a 7th Dman makes more sense IMO.
If there is penalty/injury trouble on the backend they don't lose too much by bumping Gauvreau into the top 6 and this saves the big ice-time Dmen from getting worn out if they are forced to go with 5 Dmen.
Also, all of these Dmen played in last years playoffs so they at least have some experience compared to the 4th line guys.
