Here’s what I told PetesUpdates in twitter:

He’s a late birthday ‘06 that is BIG. He still has to get used to his size, he has a great shot from the point, and has good offensive instincts, he is very raw though - decision making needs work, puck skills need work, and would like to see more consistency on both ends of the puck. I’ll be fascinated to see what he can do at this level though. Don’t think they would have selected him if he wasn’t planning on coming over to be honest. He’s not a can’t miss German, but under the right circumstances he could be an NHL draft pick in the future.

When I watched him (2 games) he was awful. No awareness, no skill. But on the bright side: He skates well for his size.

Mayer-McCoy
Smith-Cameron
Kaiser-Tuin
Ladds
Hartnell(signed but in CCHL)

This to me is best case scenario out of camp

That’s not awful coming off an OHL championship season IMO. I hope Kaiser’s agent takes a long look at how Sam Mayer and Konnor Smith have developed with the Petes and realizes there is great hope for Rio to reach his potential playing in Peterborough.
I hope the Petes have lined up Robert Francz to billet Kaiser……that should seal the deal!

I love all these people that get excited about a below average defenseman that is 6'7". Why? I would much rather take a smart skilled 5'11" defenseman that can play meaningful minutes this year than some kid that needs 4 years of work before he hits the OHL stride. Wasted pick. Says a lot about where this management is headed

The management that you are criticize just won an OHL Championship. With a rebuilding team you need to draft younger players and they did just that with this import pick. Yes, it appears that Kaiser will not report this year. The Import Draft is often a roll of the dice. Mike Oke has a history of making right decisions and I have full confidence that the team is and will be working towards another contending team within the next three to four years.

Also interesting to note -some times players that are hesitant to report -do end up reporting.

Seems like players want to be Petes again

Kaiser was going to be a PROJECT if he reported. It could have been fun, it could have been cool, it might still happen but his not reporting doesn't likely have a huge impact on the present or future of this team.

If anything, the only complaint should be, if you're ultimately going to swing and miss, maybe you should have taken an even bigger swing but again, this wasn't looking like a home run to start with.

I think I've been watching too much baseball.

Congrats to Derrick Walser on becoming the 8th head coach in Red Deer Rebels history! Derrick was responsible for the Petes defensive core and also ran the power play. The search for a new assistant coach has begun!

Oh no -this is a major hit to our future

I am happy for him but this isn’t good for us.

I figured something was up when they had the development camp and he was not there

The Petes are in an interesting situation with their import players. They have Tommy Purdeller who takes one spot and if he has a breakout season next year but is not drafted by a NHL team the Petes may want him back as an overage and he would continue to take a spot. They are also going into a rebuild and could be drafting very early in next year’s import draft and will need their second spot for that player. I think the Petes took a bit of a risk with this year’s pick because they knew if he did not report they had other options in the future. He is a raw talent but with Rob Wilson’s ability to develop players they saw him as a player with some potential to become a good player. I am not going to get upset because one player may not report when the Petes have several other promising defenceman who are in the near future going to the part of a solid Petes defence.

Kaiser was not a make or break player this season anyways. You never really know how things will go with imports……or at least I don’t know!

Kaiser may find himself not getting much ice time in Berlin which, if he does hope to be an NHL pick next June, will not be a good situation for him. This could prompt his signing with the Petes.

Kaiser may play in Germany this coming season, get drafted and then his NHL team might want him playing with the Petes.

Kaiser may also never show his face in Peterborough…..ever (his loss IMO). Meanwhile another young Petes prospect will play more minutes this season in the Maroon and White and develop more quickly as a result. As mentioned above, the Petes should end up with an early Import pick next year which could make the Kaiser situation moot.

As far as the comment above from @WorkHardEveryShift , I respectfully disagree with your assessment of “where this management is headed”. Oke has shown that he is able to evaluate the state of the team and adjust to whatever adversity he faces.
I’m confident he will get the most out of his resources and get this team on track for another run at a championship a few years down the road.

I’m OK just basking in the glow of an OHL championship and excited to see how the team develops this year.

Looks like Kaiser just used the Pete’s as leverage to get more opportunities in Berlin.
Not impossible. But I really don’t think that’s a thing. And if it’s actually what happened, I’d honestly tell him to f*** right off.

I’m pretty sure Kaiser will spend 99% of next season in the DNL. He could still get drafted from there, just like Norwin Panocha, but as of today I don’t see it. Didn’t even think he’d be OHL-ready. But as always: would love to see him prove me wrong.

If he has a break out year would he not be better as a trade piece at the deadline.

Noticing that a lot of kids in Europe are looking at staying there or getting the pro money. I think the one thing that has to be looked at is that some of these guys agents have told them they probably are not going to be a high draft pick so they get on with their careers. Then again he may find that he is not getting the ice time and they may let him go.

The Petes cannot trade everyone. They need to keep some returning players to be able to ice a team. They cannot have a team of all rookies, They will keep players like Tommy Purdeller, Jonathan Melee and Chase Lefebvre and maybe Donovan McCoy and the younger players.
