the thing we talk about with mase is only last year. Yes he did terrible last year but he was great for us in other years. We were terrible as a team last year with more turnovers than anything. Mase can be a really sollid goalie with a good team. Having a bernier/neuvy tandem looks a little worse than last year but I just cant see this tandem being as good as two years ago. Well see what happens but this situation is going to be really telling on how we will do next year. Just when our forwards are getting deeper, defense is getting younger, we have this situation. fml

Hextall is stuck here. His eggs are in the basket of one of the prospects becoming a solid starter. What do you do in the meantime? The top guys all want term and Hextall is not going out farther than three years.

Bishop got six years. Hextall is not going past three years.

If this was Homer he would give them seven years, full NTC/NMC and trade a couple of prospects to make the deal work and then make two half ass trades to cover his mistakes.

From Elliotte Friedman's 30 thoughts in November.

http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/30-thoughts-will-nhl-walk-away-2018-olympics/

19. Hard night on Tuesday for Philadelphia’s Steve Mason. Almost 59 terrific minutes before a rough game-tying goal as Ottawa beat the Flyers 3-2 in a shootout. Flyers GM Ron Hextall hasn’t entered into negotiations with either Mason or the injured Michal Neuvirth, both of whom are unrestricted free agents next summer. Some guys are built to bet on themselves, to handle the uncertainty, but people who’ve played/worked with them in the past say it will be harder for these two. Look at Mason’s contract history. His second deal was signed a year before it took effect. Traded to Philly on April 3, 2013 as a pending restricted free agent, he signed a one-year contract five days later. Eligible for something new on Jan. 1, 2014, he inked his current three-year extension 17 days after that date. Clearly, there was a plan when the Flyers got him. There’s much less of a plan for him this time around and it’s a challenge for him.

This is perfectly fine, Mason wants term, we don't.

Bye, Mase. You were a great goalie for us. Really elevated goaltending of the Flyers as it was in terrible shape until he came. He had some great seasons with us. Appreciated. Time to move on, goalie pipeline is filled up.

Bingo,,,, Im sure the Flyers would of given him the same deal Neuvy got, but Mase wants his payday. Close to zero chance he will get it ( Flames only hope ), but he was a good goalie and wish him well in his 1B role he takes somewhere,

I'd prefer Mason at 2 x 4.5m to Neuvirth at 2 x 2.5m, but we have no idea if he'd accept that short of a term. He'd also need to be OK with not getting protected in the ED.

And term is the crucial thing with all the goalie prospects in the pipeline.

They made the decision to sign Neuvirth back in February, so it wasn't his comments after the season ended.

They were never going to sign two goalies before the ED.

Mason is a good goalie...not great. He has been a bit of a diva lately and head case so he doesn't merit anything long term. He just basically pulled a Biron with the Flyers. In the long run it is best that Hextall didn't bite.

Meh. Just meh. Seems like things broke down and both parties aren't seeing eye to eye on Mason's future, so ...

Flyers fans have a really bizarre need to make stuff into some weird WWE style drama.

Every ****ing time, a bunch of you people decide someone is this big heel that nobody likes and it's always based on nothing but conjecture and a desire to justify a preconceived opinion that is otherwise not easily justified.

The team not liking Mason, or not wanting to play for him, is utter nonsense.

But based on their end of season comments, there is a clear philosophical difference between Mason and Hextall/Hakstol.

I'm glad the Flyers are moving on. I like players that rise to the occasion in the playoffs, Mason is a guy I never felt the Flyers could ride to victory in April and May.

He was a step in the right direction considering the Goalie problem that has persisted but I'd rather roll the dice and see what comes up going forward.

Why does everyone ignore the Rangers series? The level of cherrypicking that goes on to create an extra negative narrative is ridiculous.

You nailed it! Not totally sure I'd go all out Diva but definitely a headcase. He Biron'd himself off the team and management was right with both cases...

The Biron comparison is apt; I suspect Mason's agent won't come off looking as inept as Biron's did, though. Someone will sign Mason. Biron's guy completely misread the market.

Let's move on from the goalie coach thing. The whole goalie coach thing shows the fragility of Mason's mental state.

One drama bomb after another with Mason.

Last year Mason was 22nd in ES sv %, 29th in PP sv%, and 22nd in PK sv%.

The guy is just not a good goaltender.

Yeah....let's ignore that a coach was willing to walk away from his job due to Masons treatment. Let's ignore a coach put him into play while having headaches from concussions. Let's ignore playing him 3 games in 3 days.

And again, no one is saying Mason had so good season. But to ignore the 3 previous good ones is dumb. I wonder if NJ is looking to trade Schneider since he had just as bad a year as Mason.

THANK YOU.

Seriously, people find anything to vilify this guy. It's a pure witch hunt. No one stops and APPRECIATES that he's the best goalie we've had in like 15 years!

"he's good, not great"...well where the EFF are we going to find a better one without giving up significant assets?!?!! SURE, we may find a goalie that will be as good or better, but I certainly don't feel optimistic about it and I can't understand how anyone does. Being okay with Neuvirth (who has never been a starter) and the rookie Stolarz is packing it in for the 2017-18 season before it's even started.

It's nonsense.

It'd be one thing if it was just last season, but his playoff performance the year before was demoralizing.
Flyers played their heart out for Ed Snider and their own goalie turns out to be their biggest opponent...

Well like whats been said more than a few times. We don't know all the details on why Mason is likely not back. We can only speculate that Mason and his agent want a long term deal. Something Hextall is not willing to do.
Mason could very well be looking for a 4-5 year deal. Something just about everyone would not be willing to do. I am in that camp. I like Mason, but not enough to give him say 5 year deal at 5 million per.
