6. It has to be said: It’s extremely funny that the Penguins — who have struggled all year to find depth scoring — shipped out Alex Nylander and a sixth for Emil Bemstrom.

What may have seemed like a nothing swap at the time now looks like yet another cruel jab at this mess of a Penguins season. Since the deal, Nylander has eight goals and 11 points in 12 games plus 57 percent of the goals and expected goals on a bad Columbus team. He’s been so good that he’s now playing on Columbus’ top line and his average Game Score since the deal is 1.3. That’s higher than every single Penguin during the time frame — ouch.

It's weird what happens when you put skilled players ina position to succeed.

Someone I'd like to take a run at in free agency is Sam Reinhart. Guaranteed to score 30+ goals a year.

We would be paying a lot for him but he's that high end winger / C we need.
He's the big fish, but why is a 28 year old with an opportunity to cash out for a colossal contract that spans the rest of his prime signing on with a team dead in the water, hasn't seen the 2nd round since 2018, and has missed the playoffs twice?

If this team really wants a shot at competing one final time while Sid's still going, they have to fire Sully and somehow land Reinhart and Jake tbh. Just ain't gonna happen--maybe not a single one of those things, and they'd need all three.

Florida only has so much cap space. They do have the tax advantage so if the offer doesn't cover enough getting on with one of the teams that does have space like the Penguins who would be over paying for him could secure him.

I definitely do agree we may not be at the top of Reinharts to do list. I do think though he may consider it if the Panthers can't pay.

A UFA I think that goes to Boston but I'd still want and would be okay with Dubas paying a tad more is Lindholm. He does have a shot and this down year may make his cap hit a tad more reasonable. Him beside Malkin and I think they tango.

So many people buy into the "experts" narrative. Let me compete head to head with that dweeb building a team when everything is equal and I'll guarantee my team would smash his team..

Of course he has a 7 year multimillion dollar contract and I have to bust my ass for Thousands of dollars. None of it is deserved or makes any sense.

Friedman reports the Penguins are interested in signing Collin Graf who will be the top available college hockey free agent.
I'm not as high on the EU/CHL/NCAA FA class this year as in years past but Graf would certainly be good add. If for nothing else, a good WBS add to help others.

It's relatively rare for undrafted NCAA guys make it big but we've had decent success with ZAR and DOC. I think that is something that we could point to honestly (forgetting the whole Sullivan thing) - "Hey kid, the Penguins have been a long time hunter of NCAA FAs and we've had quite a few make the team and become regulars. With the focus on getting younger, we can give you as good of a shot as anyone".

Tax advantage, location advantage, and competitiveness advantage. If Pittsburgh's gonna lure anybody here, it's gonna be by extreme overpayments imo.

Anyone that blasts Dubas for the Nylander trade is a complete buffoon.
Guy did jack shit with 3 previous teams. And had nowhere near the goal pace he's on anywhere. Including the AHL.

Yes please. Switch out a guy like Duclair for Smith, trade Rakell and or Rust for speed + energy+ physicality and now we might have something.

LOL

They never gave him a legit shot. Also, Sully neauters any young player by telling them it's D first, second and third and then wonders why they don't score.

Sid, Jake, Malkin, CARTER, Letang, RUST can all skate around playing no D, but any young player must only focus on D.

WAKE UP

But we're all doing that thing we do every single year where we all kick around these grandiose and ambitious ideas of how to change things and right the ship, and without fail, every year, reality ends up being "Oh hey they signed Eller, Nieto, Acciari, and swapped out Matheson and Marino for a 50 year old Jeff Petry and some guy who was kinda okay alongside a Norris winning Hedman a few years ago."

Get ready for one more year of Sully's bro Big Jeff, and Dubas to sign some 3rd line schlub to play on Sid or Geno's wing for half a decade.

That's like telling a young comic that, with your guidance, they too can be the next Joe Piscopo.

O 100% it's an up hill climb a lot has to go right or wrong depending how you look at it.

Florida Panthers have a ton of UFAs and up near the cap.
Reinhart is doable but cheap depth will be everywhere for them.
Montour to me is a must sign for them.
Anton Lundell maybe takes a cheap 1 year deal
It's going to be tight.

Penguins could offer 9 to 10. Panthers may try 8.5 though again Tax advantage.

Boy when you break down the trades that Hextall made and the signings Dubas made, it's a pretty grim picture. The common denominator is that these are guys that were added to the "Mike Sullivan Brand of Hockey" roster. And it fails year after year after year after year after...year...

I can't fathom a roster that Dubas can put together that is magically going to work under Sullivan. They can view him as a good coach all f***ing day long but that doesn't make him the right coach for this team now nor in the future. Their only hope without a complete tear down is to fire Sullivan. That's the lynchpin in this all. After you do that, you can try again and if it doesn't go well, you can at least go down knowing you tried.
That's like telling a young comic that, with your guidance, they too can be the next Joe Piscopo.
ZAR and DOC were both prize NCAA FA piece, both came to the Penguins and got immediate playing time, and both have carved out a decent career.

ZAR and DOC not being world beaters on the ice isn't the Penguins issue nor Grafs.

No, it's just funny to me the idea of telling a player "come to the Pens, look at how ZAR turned out!" as a selling point.

They'll (Florida) figure it out, good teams always do. They'll move some shit out and find a way. Maybe they'll send some putz to Dubas for a 3rd like when Vegas had to dump cap.

This team can't hurt me much more anyways.

Thoughts on Lindholm?
He's fine. Hasn't really impressed me when I've checked him out in Vancouver. Allows Geno to move to wing more easily but I don't think he has enough offensive oomf.

My genuine thought is that this team's gonna tell everyone they're still going for it, people will buy it, and they'll get some lame dorks to fill roster spots and this team will be right back to picking top-10 next year--so they better kick the 1st to SJ this year unless they jump up in the lotto.
