People think there is a chance Sullivan will play Smith on his offside over Ruhwedel?
Yeah, whether Smith can do it or not is almost secondary...

Sullivan really doesn't like playing defensemen on their off-side. He'll do it and has done it in the past with Ruhwedel and Friedman. But inevitably he gets back to a combination that features everyone on their normal side.

Or you mean he'll only do it with Ruhwedel for long periods because he hearts the f*** out of a marginal nhler.

Was mentioned here a number of times, but also just in the GDT. With the Letang news I'm all for going after Chychrun. Certainly had interest before but even more so now with that Letang news.

I'd send a 1st + Smith + Poulin + Kapanen + Dumoulin. They could then flip Dumoulin for even more if he accepts going there. If he doesn't, add someone like Legare.

Doubt Arizona accepts.

What are the thoughts on the Dumpo extension? 4 years/3.5?
No. With the play of POJ and Pettersson, I think we would be wise to move on from Dumoulin. Smith can take the spot or we can get a cheaper replacement in FA. We need that $4.1(now) or $3.5mil later for other things.

I have two issues with this:
1. The dude simply can NOT stay healthy.
2. He is not a 5 asset player. They would absolutely accept that. If they flip Dumo for a 2nd at the TDL: Smith, Poulin, Kapanen, 1st, 2nd for him is a slam dunk, home run trade. They may want more quality over quantity, but I don't think anyone is making this type of offer.

It's an interesting discussion about who to target if Letang is out long term and what exactly long term is. Is this 2017 where we need a Hainsey or is thing longer term "we need a new 1D"? Certainly it would be easy to fit Chychrun into the cap both now and in the future but I'm not convinced he's the right target. I think we should be more coy and target a mid-level guy in a true hockey swap.

Kapanen+Rudwedel+3rd for Puljujarvi+Barrie+2nd

Petts-Petry
POJ-Rutta
Dumo-Barrie

Then Smith-Barrie next year.

I've said this before but I still don't really see a need for Chychrun. I think the defense is built exactly how you want with:

Pettersson-Letang
POJ-Petry
Smith-Rutta

The defense would obviously be better with Chychrun in the top-4 and POJ pushed to the 3rd pair, but I'm not sure I'd want to spend that $4 million on the defense instead of the forwards. Especially considering they're going to have a hole in their top-6 after the year when Zucker presumably leaves.

As an aside, I think they need to target a pretty good LWer to play with Malkin going forward. This isn't a shot at either Zucker or Malkin, I think both have been great this year. I just think that Malkin's declining a bit and needs more of a Guentzel caliber linemate to play with him, instead of 2 guys like Rakell, Zucker and Rust.

I think the discussion was about if Letang can’t return.

Kapanen had a 2 point game and the Penguins made a tweet about it. Does that mean he has trade value now?

If you really think Letang is going to retire from hockey, then I have a video to show you of him doing pullups with a 90-lb weight strapped to his nutsack.

f*** ya, sign me up. + Domi is a UFA to be, we could even flipp him at the deadline and get assets back!
I honestly thought (when he was getting no offers in the summer) Domi was going to wind up here on a "prove it" deal to set himself up for next summer. Just because of this oft touted Lemieux/Domi family connection. Especially on a year long deal.

Honestly, I would welcome it. He's scoring, he seems adaptable enough to fit in somewhere in the middle six, and does he still have a little sandpaper to his game? Like I said, i'd do it. But only as a one for one swap. Not giving up Kap + picks, just for a year of trying out Domi.

On another note, at how hard the Blackhawks have fallen. Every now and then I have to stop and reflect. The Pens will tumble down the standings one day too, but its amusing how rapidly they went from "model franchise" to "laughing stock tone deaf rapist enabling dysfunctional hellhole". The Seabrook deal, the Panarin trade (just when they looked to be retooling), paying tons of futures for Jones. Then ruining Dach and trading him, and also trading DeBrincat. Yes, go ahead and dump your two youngest assets. And all of it on the watch of "Captain Serious". Now they're just a dumping ground where guys go to pick up a paycheck and revive their careers, hoping they can beat out Sam Lafferty in the lineup.

The Seth Jones thing is so spectacularly bad. Paid oodles of futures to get him, still sucked terribly as a team, and now he's 4 months into a deal that takes him into next f***ing decade. Its like the Erik Karlsson trade on speed, in terms of franchise blunders.

Yeah, if Letang is back, there's no need for him.

The forward discussion is getting a little more complex in my opinion looking at next year. Zucker is playing very well. I don't think it's smart to bring him back at $5.5mil but he could very well get a better contract from a team that really needs a Top 6 LW, quite possibly even Minnesota. So then we look at potential replacements and, at the moment, there are some alluring names: Bertuzzi, Tatar, Athansiou as UFAs and Comtois and Sharangovich as RFAs. Sharangovich is highly unlikely but I'd love to figure out a way to get him here.

Killorn and Wood are also out there but I'm not sure if they are suitable replacements. Other possible home run option could be taking a risk with Kuzmenko. Send Dumo and Zucker away, sign Kuzmenko for big, promote Smith. Might be alright. It's a tough forward market coming up. Here's a world-class SEALBound approach:

Kapanen+ for Comtois
Zucker walks
Dumoulin walks
Kuzmenko - signs $6.5mil x 6yrs
Comtois - signs $2.5mil x 2yrs
Jarry - signs $5mil x 4-5yrs

Jake-Sid-Rakell
Kuzmenko-Malkin-Rust
McGinn-Carter-Comtois
Poehling-Bleuger-Archibald/Heinen

Pettersson-Letang
POJ-Petry
Smith-Rutta

TJ/CDS

Leaves about $3mil in space as well.

Can really mix it up too:
Jake-Sid-Rakell
Kuzy-Geno-McGinn
Comtois-Carter-Rust
Poeh-Blug-Arch

Jake-Sid-Raks
Kuzy-Malkin-Rust
Comtois-Bleuger-Carter
McGinn-Poehling-Archi

Lots of options.

I really like Sharangovich but I'm not sure I want him here just because there's already too many jokes about those creepy-ass twin lawyers and his signing would only promote more.
I believe Mears had a crack once about how if he became a Pen, Sharngovich would live in the guest house of the Shendrovich brothers, a la Sid at the Lemieux compound.

8 of his 16 points are on the PP. If Rakell can't even get a crack on the PP, Domi sure wouldn't.

Without the PP points, he's....well.....Kapanen. Maybe even worse than Kapanen. The only benefit I would see to it is they can let him walk after this year.

Why would they move on from Pettersson though? He's been great for them this year.
Yeah, finally after how many years? Teams didn't wanna trade for him, maybe his play this season they will take him. Also Chychrun is an upgrade (when healthy). This would also be an offseason deal.
