I think they'll probably run some combination of Dumo, Petts and POJ as their LD this season and decide what to do in the off-season. Reevaluate where Smith is and decide whether to bring back Dumo to fill the 3LD spot or let him walk and give Smith the spot coming into camp/pre-season.

Yeah, and it was because of the guy promoted to Letang's pairing to try and undo his sudden drop into Melichar levels of hockey. Not Petry.

Heatmaps, awayyyyyyy!

POJ - Petry looked great too. Issue is Dumo and Letang as you saw last night Petts had his worst game of the year with Tanger.

Honesty do not understand the issue with Petry at all.

My favorite part of the Petry trade is people are finally seeing that other top pairing D are just as defensively liable as Letang.

Haven’t seen this once tbh. Seems like a player who is adjusting to an aggressively stupid system lol

Won't get me to argue much on that point. But I still can't help but be disappointed. He's just not the impact guy I was hoping for. Then again a lot of "impact guys" that come here seem all over the map. It would merit some thought as to why but meh... why bother.

Okay, that doesn't mean that's what he is today.

I’m confused what people thought he was going to be. He’s eating 20+ a night in largely defensive minutes, scoring at a 38 point pace with 2nd PP time, and playing PK.

Feels like he’s getting rolled into Dumo and Letang who are just playing awful and a net 0 every time they touch the ice.

He also formed a pairing with Petts as he was supposed to that was dominant and people are like “that’s all Petts”.

You'll forgive pixies, he's hard a hard-on for Petry for as long as I've been around and has a soft spot for the guy. So leading the team in dumb, lazy penalties while being a circus defensively is a small price to pay to see Petry on that scorching 35pt pace.

He's also thrown the only meaningfully impactful hit from a Penguin I've seen in like 5 years or so.

I mean what did you expect from a 2nd pair offensive d-man. 35-40 pts is what you hope for.

If he was on the first PP I’d get being upset about that production. But realistically the criticisms of Petry seem to be he isn’t a top ten D. Which he never was going to be.

He's been pretty close to identical to what Matheson was in terms of effectiveness. Far worse skater, better physically, more expensive, older, more penalties, roughly the same production (I think Matheson was like 33pts over his time here and Petry's currently at a 35.8pt pace), about the same dipshit circus defensively.

Big shrug

Was the idea ever that Petry would play above Letang when we acquired him?
He's f***ing with you for saying "he's had way more success as a top pairing blah blah blah" and the response was "okay but that's not what he is here". Hope this helps.

Petry was brought in to be a secondary option after Letang. The problem is Letang's been absolutely dogshit most of the season, so Petry's essentially being expected to play Letang's role which he shouldn't be at this point.

On that note, Letang seems to have lost all his speed. His hallmark was his fantastic skating. Now he just looks like an average skater with below average hockey sense.

He looks like a guy that was getting high on all of the The Priority™ fumes everyone was letting off this offseason and decided that perfection doesn't really require maintenance.

Matheson was in a sheltered 3rd pairing role for the majority of his time here.

Petry is eating up the big defensive minutes while Letang gets the butter soft ones and Letang is still sucking ass.

If I watch Letang, I see a player trying to do way too much.

I think the expectations and role given to him at this stage of his career is unrealistic, yes.

But that sure isn't how everyone was framing it like four months ago.

Eh. I think he can do it, but Sullivan's insistence on playing him 24 minutes a night is odd.

Just feel like everyone is lumping in Petry as a bad player because he took a few bad penalties. He's pretty much exactly what I expected only way worse at getting the puck on net.

Which is weird, because Schultz had the same issue as did Marino. Again makes me question what our D is being told to do in the offensive zone.

Petry has never been a high PIM guy. His average per 82 games over the course of his career is 34 and that's getting 22min a night. Matheson had 33 last year in 74 games playing 18min a night. Plus you gotta expect a few more with a physical player like Petry.

I expect the PIM to settle down some as he adjusts to the system more and more and the NHL slips back into the grind of the regular season. Might have already started. He hasn't taken a penalty in 5 games and counting.
