Honestly, I'm not sure they really need a top-4 defender going forward.

I don't feel confident in what their plans are with POJ, but my guess would be that they're planning on running with these D pairs going forward:

Pettersson-Letang
POJ-Petry
Smith-Rutta

How this defense does really rides on how Letang and Petry are playing, but I don't really see any major issues with this defense. My only minor complaint is that they're pretty soft and small on LD.

I'd argue that adding a top 4 defender could smooth out Letang's minutes. That would require a brain dead coach to manage those minutes, but that's another story.

You also have to prepare that none of the current LD's are going to be a match for Letang. It's also possible that Petts' early performance is a mirage and he starts to fade.

Point being, they unnecessarily boned and burdened themselves by adding an extra year to Carter and Kap which was dumb dumb dumb

I would be fine with us taking more penalties if a) they're roughing, etc.

If you're going to take a penalty, get your money's worth. Nail somebody good (roughing, boarding, whatever) instead of getting called for something like merely lifting your stick off the ice and lightly brushing an opponent ("hooking", "holding", whatever). I get that the Penguins aren't exactly built to play anything other than wussy hockey -- as if their wimp of a coach would allow anything different -- but anybody can occasionally throw a good hit if they want to. Some teams do it far more than occasionally.

Getting their money's worth certainly seems to be the philosophy of Penguin opponents a lot of the time, and the impact is even more skewed seeing as how most of their infractions are not called (e.g. "let's run Jarry as often as we like"). The philosophy among the Game Managers is "we have to call SOMETHING sometime" (Penguins) vs. "we can't call EVERYTHING" (Penguin opponents -- and the opponents know it).

Ramp that up by a factor of 100 in the playoffs.

Not all 2 minute penalties are created equal. Aren't the Penguins as a team often among the league leaders in "hits"? Those aren't created equal either.

I like Jeannot and want him here because I like and I'd love to see him put a beating on people...but I have high doubts on what he can actually do for the team.

Sadly, the only thing that's going to save the team is for them to play better. That starts with Sid, Jake, Rust, and Letang first and foremost. Hopefully this switch is the trigger needed to help them turn it around.

I just want to be entertained. Too many nights, this team is a bore outside of a few guys. Too bad the FO didn't surround our vets with a bunch of you banshees who enjoy drinking beer, talking smack and running people into the boards. Look at what the Hanson brothers did for the chiefs in the 70's.

Add energy, beat the shit out of people, score goals, bring size and big hits.

I just want the team to be fun to watch anymore. I'm not gonna sit here and bitch about a lack 60-minute efforts because pretty much no team in the NHL plays a full 60-minutes regularly. So just, y'know, have fun out there and do cool shit? I dunno, wild, fantasyland stuff probably.

No idea why Jeannot is being discussed, though I'd f***ing love to add that guy. I imagine you're talking a pretty big haul to pry him free from Nashville.

Contracts front loaded with NMC suggest they wanted to keep the geezers here for Sid in his 3 year lightening in a bottle tour. I agree it was lazy and Hextall is limited in what the beaners want and what is best for the franchise. But signing Carter and then Kap may not fireable moves but one more stupid move and he has to go.
Good thing you can also criticize him for protecting Carter and Blueger over McCann or trading Marino for a guy that can’t play for us because Hextall botched the cap.

Can he go now?

Yeah, I just want there to be some entertainment with the last farewell tour, not merely taking it on the chin 3rd period after 3rd period. Jeannot would be a great add, but I don't think we have anyone here that would be good bait for the trade.

Edit: Like as much as Rust drives me nuts and I want him gone, I don't think I'm at the Rust-for-Jeannot level of hatred for his streaky bacon ass yet.

Yeah, the refusal to acknowledge that a) physicality works and b) works well against us drives me nuts. I get that people want to watch pure skill. But we don't have a pure skill team. I get that people hate goons, but the old goon is pretty much gone. Instead, what we get are guys that aren't physical, aren't talented, and still only get played for 8-10 minutes a night, which is about what Reaves got here anyway.

See edit.

But Rust as the key for like Jeannot + I'd consider.
Yeah, I'm probably not the guy to ask. I wanted Rust gone last year.

I dunno. I'm bored of Rust. He's peaked, he's gonna be increasingly more boring and less effective as time goes on. He's got his big contract. Hell, he lost his buzzsaw qualities years ago tbh.

I like Jeannot because he's kind of just a big old oaf. He's not exceptionally talented or anything, but he'd be fun to watch with Zucker and Geno or Jake and Sid, and is as close to a power forward as this team's ever gonna get.

You and me both, pal. I wanted him traded at the TDL.

Hell, I wanted to trade him before that, I think?

I'd easily do Rust for Jeannot, but I wasn't a big fan of re-signing Rust in the first place. I don't like this floating version of Rust. He'll go on a hot streak at some point, but overall he's not someone I'd be bothered about losing, especially if it brings in a unique type of player that we don't have like Jeannot.

IMO, this team's top six could use a 20 goal, 40 point physical winger more than it could a 25 goal, 55 point small floater.

Jeannot scored 24 goals last year (21 ES, 1 SHG and 2 PPG), he’s one of the best fighters in the league and can be trusted to get absolutely buried with DZ starts. Dude has started in the DZ like 70% of the time this season and still has been on the ice for more goals for than against.

Nashville would be dumb as hell to trade him. I really see no way they’d do it other than a MASSIVE overpayment. They’re in a playoff spot atm with their Vezina-calibre goalie having a terrible start.

So what are we giving up? A first, Pickering and…..?

We're all missing the important part here; Jeannot's a good ol' Canadian boy. That bumps him up from a 6'2" middle-6 power forward with decent offensive ability to the physical manifestation of god in our xenophobic coach's eyes. :sarcasm:
