Pettersson - Letang
POJ - Petry
Dumo - Rutta

Is the same shaky second pairing.

They can't address 2LD with a $4M 3LD who needs to play protected, limited minutes. So trade him now, see what you have in POJ and Smith, and address it before the deadline if needed (which I strongly lean towards needing to do at the moment).
As is, I think they are running it as Dumo-Petry which, isn't much better. That said, I would have more "comfort" I guess if POJ is at 2LD and Dumo is at 3LD and POJ struggles and a swap is needed vs having Smith there. That is, as I said, unless he can come in and prove himself capable.

I said this awhile back too but, you're correct in that they won't be able to address much in the defense with just Dumo as a trade chip. What has to happen (and it's starting to...) is Pettersson prove himself to be 1LD capable and one of POJ or Smith prove themselves to be 2LD capable. Then you trade Dumo out for a third pairing level dman with upside or you package him with something else and get a 2LD capable guy - and my example for that has been Soucy from Seattle. Something like Dumo+Kapanen for Soucy+Donato.

The "defense fix" is for guys to play better. There's not much we can do to bring in help really.

Once Dumo is gone next season we should look to Nashville for Ekholm or something.

Ekholm-Letang
Petts-Petry
Smith-Rutta

I'd also like if we can somehow get out of Petts cap hit and get Fowlers.

Ekholm-Letang
Fowler-Petry
Smith-Rutta

Rob Hextall vetoed a trade that would have sent Nolan Patrick to the Avalanche for Cale Makar
He knew he was gonna be a Pens GM so he did that years earlier.

Carter had 12 goals and 26 points in 36 games when he got signed.

Kapanen's RFA deal is identical to all similar RFAs.

People were questioning the Carter deal when it got signed, as in "what was the rush?"

And they could have walked away from Kap. The old adage "if all your GM friends jumped off a bridge, would you do that too?"

People can question the Carter deal, but he currently has 8 points in 12 games. He's worth his contract right now.

Kapanen was a weird one, but the moment he was qualified he was going to get 3 mil.

Man's got fancy taste in red headed step children. He could adopt 3.2 million season ticket holders for that amount, at only a dollar a day.

I didn't say it was. I'm just saying I wish the GM and the hardest workin' head coach in show bidness would get together and figure out a) what kind of players the man can actually coach and b) what the f*** we're doing with this team.

Hopefully it involves us selling off Dumo, Zucker and co at the deadline get a haul of picks and getting an NHL ready young top nine talent.

It really does feel like JR and Hextall basically just do whatever without any input or thought about the team's systems or how Sully utilizes, or refuses to utilize, players.

-edit- *Often. Not always. We all know Sully pushed hard for E-Rod and Simon.

I think the reality is Sullivan is just a shitty coach who can’t coach a healthy roster as we’ve seen for four years straight.

Guentzel - Crosby - Rakell humming? Break it up when healthy.
Zucker - Rodrigues - Kapanen a great line? Break it up when healthy.
McCann putting up 60 pt pace at C in a top six role? Put him on L3 at wing.
Guentzel - Malkin - Rust the best line in the league and Zucker and Crosby putting up tons of points? Never try it again.

Why are people so convinced the front office will resign Dumoulin?

I see nothing in their history that would make me think they’d resign and underachieving player.
They just re-signed an underachieving head coach.

We also re-signed Kap and DeSmith too.

It's not that Kap was an RFA. It's not that he's getting average 3rd liner money. It's that he sucks shit, and instead of a one-year lifeline kinda deal to see if he can break outta his funk, they gave him two for some asinine reason.

Just like it was asinine to sign a 37 year old Carter to a two-year deal instead of taking it year by year with somebody his age, who has had his fair share of steep valleys in the past calendar year.
