1. At this stage there's not really a lot of point in keeping picks in general, although I'd stress the buzz is still this draft year is shaping up to be *real* special so maybe this year is different

2. There is a point in insisting you get value for them if moving them. A 1st for JvR is a straight up no-no. A 2nd seems dubious. Both could get a lot better value in the summer targeting cap casualties.

3. So far the only rumour of his price is mid to late round pick, so this is probably academic unless it becomes a real seller's market. Retention usually costs around a 4th, so add that on if you will... 3rd + 4th?

Where else would he play here, fitness permitting? Guentzel and Zucker are far more impactful players at this point, and both are gelling very well with their Cs.

Also not sure why you say that about our recent trades. Our two most recent deadline trades were Carter and Rakell, who both excelled on an individual level save for Rakell getting concussed. Petry and Poehling are both doing quite well too, which excuses the one guy who isn't in Smith (which is a weird situation) and that covers all major traded for players of Hextall's time iirc. Carter trade looks even better if we didn't extend him, but he did what was required very well for the price before that point.

On the other side of the coin, that means we may get even more value for our 1st.

I agree on your JVR assessment. The Flyers were trying to give him away this offseason and team reportedly asked for their 1st in exchange. If we do the Jeff Carter trade with conditional 3rd and 4th rounders based on our playoff success, I could see them doing it. The question is if they make that trade to US.

Where did the JVR stuff come from anyway? I mean, I'm glad it's pretty close to never gonna happen realistically because of the whole Philly-Pittsburgh rivalry thing, but why does anybody specifically want JVR? Dude's fallen off a cliff in recent years and ain't exactly a guy you load up with for a push deep into the playoffs imo.

Chychrun I understand because he's a pretty damn good player, but JVR is weird.

size, hard nosed player, goes to the net, and scores goals. Likely comes cheap. seems like he fits like a glove outside of being a flyer.

Truth.

But we gotta get it if we go for it. I'm probably misrepresenting people if I'm saying people are agog to give a 1st for JVR but, if we're talking "f dem picks", then it ain't a 1st for JVR.

If people want to talk Gavrikov, I hear handing out that 1st. Or Meier. Not JVR.

I don't think there's going to be a problem with them getting offers like that. JVR's the sort of big experienced guy GMs are going to like and right now it looks like not so many sellers.

Shame that the two kinda dream acquisitions in terms of fit and cost both belong to rivals.

Feel like Toronto or Edmonton makes an absolutely perplexing deal for Gavrikov.

I’d give up two 1st and multiple picks for Meier.

I'll be Captain Buzzkill and say that I don't see a major acquisition in the Penguins' future unless someone ends up out for the rest of the season.

The two likely trade pieces in season are Heinen and Kapanen. As much as everyone is fairly ready to move on from Dumoulin, let's be honest - they won't trade him. They just won't re-sign him.

If they trade Heinen, it's for someone who offers something different for the bottom six at a similar price.

If they trade Kapanen, there will be a contract coming back, not as a cap dump. I also think Hextall is stubborn enough to not trade Kapanen until at least the off-season.

I just don't see the pieces coming together for a player like JVR, even though stylistically he'd probably be a solid fit.

Meier would be an excellent add if not one of the best we could likely do.

Big body, skilled can play both ways and has a knack for scoring goals. Just coming into his prime.

Sign me up, that top 6 would look pretty sexy to close out the Crosby/Malkin years

Hopefully Hex gets some pressure from the team to get it to where it needs to be.

Normally I wouldn't put much into it but with Crosby coming down to the end of his career and the team still competing, it looks like FSG group still want to party.

I wouldn't be surprised at all to make a big splash. The only issue is that it takes 2 teams to tango as in all of these talks between teams.

Agreed. And Philly won't trade with us anyway. I still say Kapanen and low tier Prospect for Travis Konecny if we're in fantasy trade partner land.

I think people here actually think firing the coach = cup because they've only watched hockey for 10 years and just the pens.

For every Berube there's a Jon Cooper.

It’s not a zero sum game. You can keep the picks and still compete now.

I get sending a pick if it’s for a player that has a chance of putting you over the top but I don’t see that kind of player available.

You know what would be a perfect Xmas gift for people on this messageboard?

A Barry Trotz scented candle for their home. Where they can watch a Mike Sullivan team win but still have a Barry Trotz experience at the same time. Smells like only one Cup to me personally.

In years past the Joel Quenneville candle was on a lot of posters list but unfortunately its now discontinued.

I think I'd want the Bruce Boudreau scented candle. I hear it smells of hickory.

Here's an Five Star review Amazon review of the Mike Sullivan candle:

"This candle exudes the scent of success, shines bright and is so stubborn that it is hard to put out."

Three Star Review:

"This candle is made in the USA but stole its whole design from the Hornqvist Candle factory from Sweden"

Zero Star:

"I first like this candle but decided it was no longer the right candle for my sad home"
