Not doing much at all is a huge disappointment. I hated the hiring from the start, thought he was a poor candidate for this team. You can’t have his “patient” approach when the core is so old. Time is of the essence for this team. He was a bad choice by Mario and a horrible choice to retain for FSG.

He’s not someone capable of making sweeping changes quickly. He was hired into a situation that isn’t right for him. If you aren’t going to rebuild, why did you keep Hextall?

But then he would have signed Malkin by now. Like I agree in part what you are saying but his actions do not seem like that.

Why are they talking about spending in FA instead of just signing Malkin and putting a team together after?

But I also think the new owners should have just cleaned house and put what they wanted in place. Disjointed leadership never ends well.

They offered him a deal any the ownership group is the same group that walked away from Mookie betts and will see bogarts and devers walk because it costs more than they want to spend.
Steelers walked away from Ward and Troy and forced Ben to take a pay cut

Because he was hired to not mortgage the future like previous management and restock the prospect pool (albeit old ownership). He's doing what he was hired to do. Now in his first couple years he's traded some picks but we will see less of that soon.

Who were they gonna go after that would've made a difference? There's too much bullshit cap tied up in guys like Zucker, Petts, Dumo, McGinn, Kap, and even Blueger. I don't buy for a minute they were ever gonna be major players for guys like Kadri, or Gaudreau, or Forsberg.

They should've just cleaned house and changed approach if they really thought the Sid/Geno/Letang core had enough gas to take the team to another Cup Finals.

Another year of Sully. Another year of Hextall. Another year of depth guys like Zucker, Kap, E-Rod, etc. instead of anything good enough. :laugh:

As for Geno's whole negotiation; I just don't know why the default is that the FO *has* to give him the 4th year. Why can't Geno take 3, since his body's probably gonna be shot by the end of 3 years anyway? I don't think it really matters either way, I'm just riffing. It's never "Man I hope Geno relents and sticks around", it's always "C'mon Hextall give him 4 years!"

I think these days, even the most gifted players in skill & vision would be a hindrance at 5-on-5 if they couldn't skate. That includes late career Mario and maybe Gretzky. Sid's skating has dropped off but stabilized recently. If he doesn't drop much further I could see him being effective for a while.

Exactly. They are on the path to just being the same team. I think the whole FA thing is just negotiating tactics to resign everyone and a bunch of hot air.

Also, the Carter deal was pretty good at the time but turned out to be a mistake with hindsight.

Carter absolutely lit it up from the moment he got here through securing that contract. He helped keep us afloat in the early part of the season with Sid frequently out of the lineup.

His dropoff occurred afterwards.

And also, as always, two wrongs don't make a right when it comes to Carter & Malkin. "You made a mistake so go ahead and make another one!" is childish.

That may be it, but the closer we get to FA the more intrigue sets in around testing the waters. Like he didn't get to do in 2012. Could be fun? Could be humbling, but who knows.

Again I won't begrudge him for any direction he wants to take. It's his life.

So much ridiculous drama. This is tepid compared to other negotiations teams have had with stars over the years, but it's just playground BS and it's tiring. Just sign the deal. If all this is smoke and mirrors from J.P. Barry to try to go the extra 1,000 miles to get every last cent or year he can for his client, more power to him I guess but mother f***er this is dumb. I can't deal with another Rossi article or another proclamation from Madden. This is all starting to feel like Dying Alive Part 2. Courtesy of the most melodramatic boob and complete shill writing in Pittsburgh. I can't believe the Athletic lets him write under a professional title as an objective reporter. He is Malkin's publicist, and not a great one.
 
I'll be glad when this dumb soap opera shit is done one way or another. All this saga has done has made me resent the FO *and* Geno for stoking the ire of the fanbase for their benefit. I get that it's all part of the dance but c'mon dude, the team's chances are cooked. It doesn't really matter whether it's Geno or Trocheck at 2C because the wings are gonna be, like, Zucker and Kap, or Zucker and Rakell.
