Off season time. New thread time apparently cause @Ugene Magic doesn’t like high page counts.

So how about them Malkin and Letang UFAs? Maybe we should sign one or both.

Geno thread. Keep Geno talk here:

How we feeling about the picks in aggregate? I feel like the first three feel like interesting bets, with the last two feeling a little low on upside but can live with it..

I guess I don't follow along enough with prospects these days to have a super informed opinion (I leave that to Hockey Dog) and taking into account that these things are kind of a crapshoot where the Penguins are picking... I thought they did fine. Everyone wanted them to go for a player with a high ceiling and Pickering seems to be in that exact mold. I know there were some sexier picks on the board but I think he's a great gamble.

Murashov = Clang replacement. And I've said for a while I like the idea of keeping the system stocked with goaltending so I'm obviously fine with this. On the smaller side but that's not the end of the world.

Like @dogthateats said the team REALLY seems to like Plante. And with a name like Zam I mean... who am I to complain?

As you said yourself, the last two picks are a bit safe but at that point in the draft it's all kind of a wash. If they want to draft some bigger bodied, lower-upside guys who can maybe help on a depth line someday I'd rather they do it here than a few rounds earlier.

As for the picks, big shrug. It's pretty much impossible to gauge this stuff for a solid 3-5 years for guys picked where the Pens picked, imo. Don't know the first thing about anybody picked after Pickering, and for Pickering specifically, I know all of 5 minutes of googling scouting reports and videos yesterday (which is to say f*** all), and Jesse's opinion that the kid's ceiling is basically Dumo's smarts and defensive play with Matheson's wheels and transition ability. That sounds like a f***ing hell of a player, tbh, even if it's one we won't get to watch in a Penguins uniform until like 2027.

I figured out the one thing I dislike about the letang contract… he should have taken 1.8 million less so it would have been 5.8 mil per… then sign malkin for 7.1 and you have a matched set with Sid

Sure 1 yr of Kane at 50%

1st (23), 2nd(23), & Poulin

I'm sure that'll do just the trick
We can make a better offer than that, but I know this sub likes being negative by default.

And yeah it's 1 year but this team soon will not be contender status for like a 10-15 year stretch a la Red Wings, so I don't really care.
If they're going for it, then go for it. There's no players available that will boost our chances more than him.

Based on the last 2 days from Chicago - 'whatever's necessary' might not mean what some may think for the likes of P.Kane.

Hell - I've always held a slight grudge to Toews with the overratedness...but he would be a HUGE get on this team. Maybe bigger than Kane tbh.
Kane had 92 points last year. Toews had 37.

And the price for DeBrincat was not very high. If anything that makes me optimistic about trade costs for huge adds.

Eric Tangradi just never got his chance to shine. He was the next Lindros
Glue him to Malkin's hip for 41 games. Just so we can see what we have in him.

Some of you newer kids on the block don't really understand how delusional some parts of this board was back in the day.

The Staalkin threads were enough to drive most sane people to suicide.

Sid saying that he’d like to play for another 6 years makes me think he wants 2000 points before he retires or at least get to 1922 points, which would put him in 2nd all-time, 1 ahead of Jagr.

What do you guys think the chances are of him getting there are? I think 2000 would be a stretch but the 1922 is definitely doable.

Did he say that today?

Sid said "at least 3 (years) and then we'll see" at the cleanout presser.

The trade cost for huge adds is rarely as big as people think it should be though is it?

Teams usually only move on from huge adds when they perceive their backs to be against the wall and need to move on more than they need full value. Their markets are usually very limited too due to factors like trade clauses, expiring contracts, cap, and teams offering their main preferred asset.

Unfortunately most of those factors don't favour this team. It's part of why I'm happy we took the 1st here. We could have traded it now but the shopping power of 21OA is quite low and if Pickering looks like he's hitting, he could be a main preferred asset. It's a gamble, but I think it's about the only way we get there.

That's what I'm saying. We agree on this. This is especially the case when the player has only 1 year left and UFA after.

That scenario could start taking place soon. Kane has nothing to play for next year, and he just lost his scoring linemate.
He's still excellent and it's not hard to envision at all him wanting to chase more Cups.

He'll have a lot of interested teams but I think we'd have a puncher's chance. We can offer him Sid and Jake on his line.

Yeah we wouldn't be favorites, but I would like to see Hextall try, if the mandate is to win from FSG.
These next few 1sts don't mean much to me because by the time they're ready to play in the NHL, we're not gonna be in contention anymore. And they won't be good enough players to change that on their own.
I can't envision us being stronger or even equal to our current level in 5 years when Pickering wants to suit up. At best he'll just be a piece to help us maintain bubble status. So how much does he and the next few 1sts matter, realistically, in terms of getting us deep again down the road?

All signs point to no rebuild coming for many years.

None. That would mean he would have to average 99 points a season for six seasons during the twilight of his career for a player who has played a full season once.

I have not heard the six years. I've heard three. That's around he age #66 & #99 retired I believe? Given his commitment to his body he could play longer than three but he would need to accept not being one of the best in the world anymore. There's no way he can play this way until he's 40. I'm thinking he'll end up in the 1,600-1,700 point range.

If he didn't have the injuries he would have absolutely had a shot at 2,000.

Bruh if Petts and Kap were worth 2nds they'd have been long gone...

In that realm we'd have also traded Dumo for a 1st & B prospect.

We’ll Yohe posted it in the Athletic. Could be lip service from Sid but I doubt it. I could see him wanting to move up into at least the top 3 all time if he’s relatively healthy. And if the league scoring going forward is anything like last season, I could see him getting to 1922.
