Off season time. New thread time apparently cause @Ugene Magic doesn’t like high page counts.

So how about them Malkin and Letang UFAs? Maybe we should sign one or both.

Geno thread. Keep Geno talk here:

Mr. Hextall, you can get rid of players you don't want...it is being proven tonight.

Of course, if you and your coach still want said players...
It's also being proven you have to pay assets in order to do so. That's important to remember.

Hextall can't just be like "Yo, Arizona, take Zucker with no money retained for a 4th round pick and give us some kid who is never gonna see anything but the ECHL." That's not gonna happen.

But the thing about the team still wanting guys we all can't wait to unload, well, that's the sad part. It took Jack Johnson being the absolute worst player in the NHL for the team to buy him out, and they were teary-eyed doing it. I highly doubt they want to move Zucker, Petts or Dumo, let alone are actively working on a deal for any of them.

In his dumb bald head, he won’t have to get rid of anyone since Rust and Letang took discounts.

Reading Letang's comments just makes me feel more and more confident that the "Malkin is willing to test free agency" stuff that came out from LeBrun is pure posturing from his agent.

There's no way I believe that Malkin would walk if he wants $6 million over 4 years while the Penguins are offering $6 million over 3 years.

If they can actually bring Malkin in at 6M that's some pretty impressive work by Hextall. 4ish million in cap savings between Malkin/Letang far better than I would have hoped, honestly.

I know I've been pretty down on the whole thing but if he can reel it all in that's pretty impressive. I mean... this is all assuming you think the core are still great players.

Offer 7 mil for Geno for 3 years max then just wait. I can’t imagine Geno not signing that. I don’t think he could get much more elsewhere.

Geno’s probably just trying to squeeze the most out of the Pens that he can (fair enough too). Pens are doing the opposite (also fair).

Should hear something before Free Agency.

I still can't believe Hextall got Letang to take a full million less than he's currently making--which is already a steep discount. Wild stuff.

It's insanity. Even the most optimistic estimates for Letang were that he'd come in around $7.5 million, but that was with 4 or 5 years.

To get him at Jeff Petry money is downright insanity, regardless of the term.

Yeah. I don't think he'll be playing in years 5 or 6, tbh. So it's essentially a 3 year deal at a hair over $6 million a year.

Geno will probably be signed before the weekend wraps up, I'd guess, now that they know where they stand with Letang.

I'm just curious if the team plans on returning pretty much as they've been in recent years, or if they plan on trying to move pieces around to be able to land a significant upgrade at forward.

6M x 4?? easily worth it. Frontload the first 3 years and the 4th is meh and retires trade Petts to LA for cap space, re-sign Rakell and maybe we have room for another top 6 winger for Geno? if we got the cap space idk. or maybe no Rakell and make space for someone like Forsberg if we can get the cap room.
Has Brendan Lemieux been traded yet, Pens could get Alex Iafallo , seems like those guys could be targeted for a packaged deal.. not sure..

I don't understand why we couldn't have traded the 21OA pick with Zucker for a 2nd or a 3rd and got roughly the same caliber of talent.

Dumb. Zucker-Malkin-Kapanen L2 here we come baby!

yes, we could have…its the noncreative, conservative shit like holding onto your overpaid mediocre players that makes my blood boil…

"Hey, yeah it's Ron Hextall. Some dummies on the forums are gettin' on me for not dumping cap. You mind taking Pettersson's awful contract off my hands? As a favor? Cool, thanks a bunch. Yeah, sure, a 7th is fine. *hangs up* Whew that was easy. Those message board idiots were right, what've I been doing?"

I'm talking about substantial bribes for Zucker and Petts (though I'd rather trade Dumo for + value than bribe for Petts).

Not some 7th bullshit. Commit to getting out of this nonsense.

Holy smokes, I cant believe how much it cost Edmonton to get rid of Kassian. I mean, I know he's awful value, but Holland must be really friggin desperate. Same with Mrazek. And now Toronto pays that price to wipe the slate clean and gamble on another goalie in FA. Dubas must feel like there's an anvil dangling over his head.

And by the same token, I'm amazed these deals are being offered, and teams that are well, well below the cap floor (and years away from contention) like Anaheim werent lining up to take that bad money off people's hands for bribes. I mean, for all the bizarre things Chicago did today, committing fully to, uhh, a "rebuild", and landing a pick for Mrazek was pretty slick.

Added Sullivan: "I mean the core isn't done winning, but personally, I'm definitely done with it. See you after the first round, next year."

If they build a tougher defense somehow magically they could win another cup... Depends if GENO signs cheap.. and good and the right trades are made.. and free agent frenzy dead line with this bunch...

Dude what? Petr Mrazek played like an ECHL goalie and is paid like a 1b. They bribed them because he sucks and is paid triple what he should be. Zucker is a middle six NHL player with a slightly expensive contract. You don't have to bribe teams to take good NHL players off your hands. Petts is a positive too. There's no way we'd have to add just to move on from them. Just because guys aren't as high impact as we wished they were doesn't mean they have negative value to NHL teams. A team like Seattle would take Zucker or Petts in a heartbeat if we were willing to give them away for a 4th or 5th.

If we could give away Zucker or Petts without bribing or taking a similar crappy deal back, we'd have already done it. No one wants a 3rd liner paid like a contender's 3rd best forward. Who BTW is never healthy.
