Off season time. New thread time apparently cause @Ugene Magic doesn’t like high page counts.

So how about them Malkin and Letang UFAs? Maybe we should sign one or both.

Geno thread. Keep Geno talk here:

The Red Wings have won one series since 2011-12. They are a few years away from being a playoff team, and even further from being contenders.

So we may be looking at a ~15 year gap between them losing contender status until they regained it.

If that's what people want the Pens to do, then I'll respectfully disagree that that is the optimal course.

I would rather do a full rebuild right now and cut that in half.
But FSG will never rebuild. They will only re-tool.

Our future is more like Minnesota or Nashville imo. Stuck in the middle.
That is really pretty much the common life cycle of a franchise. Not everyone falls ass backwards into generational players like we have.

Well the good news is that Dumo would either walk or be re-negotiated down within a year anyway.

I really hope this team doesn't pull a Scuderi with Dumo. I like him better than most and appreciate the nuances of his role but bringing him back for anything more than peanuts seems very inadvisable.

Bear in mind the 4 vs. 3 on Geno's deal is about how many years the team just eats a dead hit on the back end. Not an insignificant consideration.

Ultimately I think we get 4 years and $5.5M AAV after seeing the Letang deal

They could have built around Crosby and Letang and possibly won 1 more Cup.. cannot have this defense they currently have and go all the way.. but people get giddy with Geno..

Everything aside, I just would look at letang and his contract. Clearly he’s taking that contract because 1)he wants to stay in Pitt 2) To help with retaining Malkin.

The two players have discussed their contract talks with each other. Malkin is a done deal.

lol if they screw this up because they won't give Malkin one more piddly year after signing Letang for six.

Also re: McGinn... wait... do we think he's gritty? I can't say I have seen the same thing.

The most "gritty" players on the roster were Geno and Friedman. Math occasionally.

If you want to target a winger that I think would be a nice compliment to Geno/2nd line. It's Josh Anderson from Mtl

Anderson is primed for a huge overpay. I don't hate the player but whoever gets him is going to have paid way too much.

It seems impossible to think that this offseason passes without at least one PIT-VAN deal doesn't it? Far too much supposed interest and the FO connection...

Yeah I mean the total lack of pushback on this team is one of my problems with it. I think I would have noticed someone out there playing with some edge aside from the guys you mentioned. Perhaps McGinn suffers from ZAR-itis? In that he throws a lot of hits but nobody actually cares because it's like getting bludgeoned with a feather.

why the f*** not? They went to 6 years with Letang to stretch it out…no reason they couldn’t go to four years with Geno
As someone who has never really been a big Letang fan, he's aging like wine and Geno is aging like a turkey sandwich. So there's that. But, yes, it would be ridiculous to play hardball with Geno over 1 year.

It isn't that much of a discount in my opinion.

It is basically just adding dead/LTIR years at the end to get him to the total $ figure. I could have seen Letang getting anywhere from $35-45M on the open market and this is in there.

I think it's very possible Malkin has had an extremely bad/unlucky run re: injuries at the worst time of his career (this seems in line with his luck) and that he could well play 70ish games the next two seasons, at least. The knee repair seems to have been a success and he'll have a full year of recovery behind him.

But I realize this will elicit no small amount of ridicule because this is "just who Malkin is" or whatever so I digress.

The problem with Malkin has become He needs superstars supporting His role which we no longer can afford...

we can afford it now with the AAV these guys are taking…the problem is Hextall has never been bold in that department but if we sign Geno at $6
M AAV we still could go after Forsberg if we wanted

For the longest time, we heard the Pens weren’t willing to match term with Letang and then they eventually did. I think you’ll see the same with Malkin. He may have to take a little bit less but I think both sides will budge.

Does Forsberg really want to leave Nashville?

Its a pipe dream but I hope Hexy swings for the fences this summer and tries to sign Gaudreau or Forsberg. If Geno signs for around 6m and Hexy can dump Petterson and Zucker, they have the cap space to do it.

I have to believe there's zero chance the Pens would sign Forsberg but if they should, it just wouldn't feel right without also finding a way to get Derrick Pouliot on a league min deal.

I dunno. I'm sticking to my guns until I actually see otherwise. I still think they are going to let him walk.

I get the feeling that they are using his loyalty against him, too. Which... I mean... it's a business and I get it but... still doesn't sit well.
