Off season time. New thread time apparently cause @Ugene Magic doesn’t like high page counts.

So how about them Malkin and Letang UFAs? Maybe we should sign one or both.

Geno thread. Keep Geno talk here:

I'm on board. I don't think McGinn is useless or anything, I probably wouldn't even say he's overpaid but on THIS team at THIS time he's overpaid for the role. That more than anything makes him an obvious target.

If I had my way McGinn, Zucker, Kap, and Dumo would be the obvious offloads. I'd keep Pettersson over Dumo.

Completely agree. There is a lot of obvious flab on this roster. I guess the question is whether or not management sees it that way and how much can be done about it and how soon.

I think Dumo is a better player than MP right NOW. But very soon? Ehhhhhhhh

The team is already getting massive cap savings with what Rust and Letang have taken. Trying to make massive roster changes that involve gutting a ton of money seems unnecessary.

Move out Pettersson for sure, and move out Zucker if you can truly get an elite piece by doing so. But beyond that, I really don't see the point. If you can end up with this going into next year, you're well set going into the year:

Guentzel-Crosby-Rust
Rakell-Malkin-Trocheck
Zucker-Carter-Heinen
O'Connor-Blueger-McGinn
Zohorna-depth guy

Dumoulin-Letang
Matheson-Marino
POJ-Ruhwedel
Friedman

Jarry-DeSmith
I genuinely feel like this roster could win a cup if it stayed healthy. The defensive depth could use boosting at the deadline but it's otherwise pretty good. I'd be happy if we could get something approaching this roster

You could also boost the defense by trading Zucker and replacing him with Kapanen on the 3rd line. That gives you around an extra $2.5 million to play with.

lol if they screw this up because they won't give Malkin one more piddly year after signing Letang for six.

Also re: McGinn... wait... do we think he's gritty? I can't say I have seen the same thing.

I'm surprised G wants more than 3 years, TBH. But like others, if it's one more year holding it up, wtf does it matter?

In NHL 98, the Penguins had three goalies - Barrasso, Wregget, and Lalime. Wregget had the highest rating, Barrasso 2nd, and Lalime 3rd. If you boot Barrasso off the roster, Lalime became the starter, and it boosted the overall rating of goaltending despite the lower individual rating.

Never understood it.

Also, Rob Neidermeyer had a higher rating than Jagr. Odd.
If it was Scott I'd understand but Rob? That's brutal.

guess if the team wants 2 years and begrudgingly goes to 3 going another to 4 is effectively doubling what they are comfortable with?

If they're willing to go 6 years on Letang I feel like they'll eventually give into 4 years on Malkin. It would be super weird for that to be a deal-breaker

They probably want Malkin to make Letang-money if they’re going 4 years.

Maybe Kevin Constantine did the ratings?

If the term is 6 years, yesh. No. If the argument is 4 over 3, just do it. If the argument is 5 vs 3, compromise on 4.

Rossi's tweet from earlier indicated Malkin was willing to give up AAV for the extra year. I'd imagine it gets sorted out quickly. We're talking about 1 year here.
I can’t see it being a deal breaker either.

How come Letang is not showing up in the Pens line up on Spotrac . Those guys usually are on their game fast.

TFP has Malkin as Pens as the front runners but other teams want Him.. TFP only had Letang connect to Pens long ago..

The Red Wings have won one series since 2011-12. They are a few years away from being a playoff team, and even further from being contenders.

So we may be looking at a ~15 year gap between them losing contender status until they regained it.

If that's what people want the Pens to do, then I'll respectfully disagree that that is the optimal course.

I would rather do a full rebuild right now and cut that in half.
But FSG will never rebuild. They will only re-tool.

Our future is more like Minnesota or Nashville imo. Stuck in the middle.

Well the good news is that Dumo would either walk or be re-negotiated down within a year anyway.
