I was saying this the other day when people were whinging about giving Letang a fourth or fifth year -- they're gonna need some dead money for ~3 seasons or thereabouts to do this thing right. Ain't nobody ever made much progress with little half-assed rebuilds and touch ups.

Letang’s better but not by all that much. He’s also at the age where Dmen start to fall off sharply, while Klingberg is in his prime. I fear Klingberg will be the better Dman soon, if not this upcoming season then the one after that. I do hope I’m wrong though.

It doesn't matter. They'll bury the contract if he can't finish it. They may need a partner like Arizona to do it, but the lower AAV makes it possible.

They won't even need to do that. They're going to suck in years 5 and 6 of that deal anyway, just give him the C and let his bloated cap hit help the team hit the cap floor.

I think trochek is the main target as a replacement at 2C, a younger hometown player who plays with "grit" who would come cheaper than geno and allow them to build some middle six depth.

I could also see them trade dumo to a team like the sabers today or tomorrow for minimal return like a meh draft pick or a good cheaper pk-ing forward like girgrenson. Sabers could use a vet defender to pair with one of their high end younger blue liners.

This opens up space to bring back rackell and geno ends up in Carolina with staal.

And then, God help us, they will sign Domi because burke.

I don't agree with those signings, however I don't see them as reasons that would preclude us signing Geno or KL. They have nothing whatsoever to do with it TBTH. You're gonna have to pay for a 3C and back up goalie anyhow. Not sure why that matters at all in the context of signing Geno or Letang.

The difference in their cap number alone could be enough to bring in Rackell (let alone the remaining cap, or any more that might be created via trades)

I say this with all sincerity for any Pens fans who don't know how Hexy operates yet:

Any article that is based primarily on how much/little Hextall speaks about negotiations is a useless article.

Hextall doesn't publicly talk about negotiations really. You'd be lucky to even get the "I think we'll get a deal done today" kind of comment out of him...dude is air tight & usually gets value in his deals. Don't freak out about Malkin until he's gone. Just my two-bit to hopefully hype y'all up.
