Off season time. New thread time apparently cause @Ugene Magic doesn’t like high page counts.

So how about them Malkin and Letang UFAs? Maybe we should sign one or both.

Geno thread. Keep Geno talk here:

The players flanking Malkin last year were so bad that just getting a pair who could finish occasionally would be an upgrade. I'm not going to go dig up the analytics screen shot, but it's well-established here that his wingers last year couldn't have been more inept if they tried. That doesn't mean he needs "superstars."
I think JFresh posted that his chances created per 60 stat was as good as usual, his assists/60 were way down, that should mean something

I for one am completely bamboozled as to why anyone wouldn't be satisfied with Danton Heinen (league journeyman), and Kasperi Kapanen (Sami's son) with sides of old man Carter and Jason Zucker as second line wings. Those guys are luminaries. 35 year old knee-blown Malkin carried less when he was in his early 20s after all and that's totally relevant, now.
you never know but taht projected third line of Heine JC Kappy is giving me uneasy feelings about next season no matter what happens with TOP 6

I mean it tracks with the eye test, too. Which displayed on average like 3-5 utter flubs on golden setups per game. A lot of it bad luck to be fair and of course the fact that there is a goaltender in net that has something to say about stopping even some of the best of chances. Malkin's advancing age and declining performance that comes with it also at play. But I don't think it's unfair at all to say the lion's share can be placed on players elevated to positions they should not be expected to perform in.

Honestly maybe it's me misreading the situation, but Malkin's talking like someone who plans on being back next year if he's joking around like that.
Easily could be reading too much into it, but I do think it's notable he's joking around on social media. If he was really ticked off about how things were going, it'd be hard to see him joking like this - especially the Kapanen support.

Still can't believe Letang's signed to a million less AAV than he is now.

Hope Hextall can get aggressive in moving deadweight, because bringing back the same team isn't gonna cut it.

I wouldn't be surprised if Malkin comes in at higher AAV but shorter term so that the "pecking order" is maintained or it doesn't look like as much of a pay cut. 3x7, 4x6.5, something like that

Lots of talk about whether the Pens should be rebuilding or not amongst this fanbase but considering the Pens and Blackhawks are in the same situation in terms of aging stars, thank God we’re not like them. Woof.
Yeah, real "There But For the Grace of God Go I" energy in Chitown.

Maybe the ghost of Chris Chellios can show them the path to not becoming da Bears?

The penguins stars are actually stars and not piece of shit humans who got overrated by a sport that values stoicism over skill.

Hey wait shouldn't Toews be available?

There's your 2C replacement right there! And he has all those intangibles and stuff and ranks better than Malkin on dumb arbitrary lists. All that leadership and "great two way play" should make season ticket holders happy.

We need an angry emoji.

...plus you know that if any big team controversy flares up he will be nowhere to be seen and had no idea it was going on! Neat! His leadership is so amazing that he can avoid problems before they even come up.

and, still, I’d take Kane at 50% retained in a heartbeat at the Chicago fire sale….
