Off season time. New thread time apparently cause @Ugene Magic doesn’t like high page counts.

So how about them Malkin and Letang UFAs? Maybe we should sign one or both.

Geno thread. Keep Geno talk here:

I guess Malkin is waiting for everyone to get signed to see how much is left and then reveal his super sweet contract.

Wouldn’t 4@6ish give them a little more flexibility for other areas?
Cap-wise on the front end sure but that fourth year will suck when Geno sucks and the team is trying to stay competitive with Guentzel and Rakell etc. I would be more ok with 4x6 than no Geno, but 3x7 I prefer.

Anything is possible at this point.

he’s going to play for the Pens for free…but FSG is going to sign him to a lucrative $25 million contract to be head bottle washer and entertainment coordinator of the 2022-2026 Penguins hockey team…no cap circumvention there…

Anything is still possible, but I think Letang's deal makes it much more likely that Geno signs and at a reasonable rate in the next few days.

I know people are scared to get their hopes up (or are starting to worry that Geno will stay, either/or) but I think that him not signing is probably the least likely possibility. But who knows? Not I.

Let's all remember that E-ROD scored that amazing goal that I don't think even think E-ROD understood how he did it.... I thought for sure there is no way in the world E-ROD is pulling this breakaway off..

I guess my whole thing is "how did we get to all this success to begin with 17 years ago." Do that or as close to that as you can in today's league, again. I frankly don't care about deadweight past the end of Crosby's current deal. Suck hard for three or four seasons and start over fresh. Glass the sands and boil the seas... all that. Halfassed rebuilds and retools usually go nowhere except extended mediocrity.

Everyone wants to do the "blow it up" dance. But they are like three seasons too early.

I'm ok with 4x6 if it's all that will keep Malkin here until Crosby retires. Letang is going to play forever and that's cool but this era will end when Crosby retires. My thoughts about keeping them together is about practicality and a little sentiment. If Malkin and Letang sucked right now it would be hard to argue but they don't and won't for a few years at least. Keeping them was always the best hockey decision. It's also the right decision from a legacy perspective, and that shouldn't be totally dismissed. We aren't talking about a nice run of success for 5 or 6 years, we are talking 16 years of incredible performance and 3 Cups. That needs to be rewarded, not just for the players involved but to keep intact the legacy and culture this team has worked hard to develop over the past several decades.

I understand negotiations and business considerations but haggling over a million here or there to the point that one of these players goes to free agency is absolutely ridiculous and Hextall should be raked over the coals for it if it happens, and then summarily fired to be honest. He signed Carter before he signed Malkin, he doesn't get any goodwill from me on this. Just get it done

Carter is only good when He has His strides going... other than that He looks old... agree it was a terrible signing...

Shit, I got a hammock I get high on and watch Pens games.

Spending money on going to sporting events feels like a relic of the past to me. Yeah, hockey's way better in person, but I don't wanna deal with the to and from travel and shelling out a shitload of money. /shrug

Sports have really gone by the wayside for me over the years. I used to watch basically all of them at least in passing and played a few, too (never at a high level mind you). Hockey is really all that is left for me and honestly it gets harder to watch the league every year. I suspect that after this offseason I might be even less motivated to turn the games on.

Im sorry, we talking about the Pens or Pirates here?

Oh right, the Penguins.

Weird how he always wanted three years and now all of a sudden he wants more than that. Also, I love the verbiage these insiders use. “He may or may not go to free agency.” Yeah no shit lol

I mean it could be they want him at 6 mil and won’t go higher. So Geno said ok give me a 4th year then and they said no.

I imagine he could had at 3 too. The pens just aren’t going over what letang got now

I'm going to have some irritation with both Malkin and Hextall if they end up walking because the Penguins don't want to go over 3 years while Malkin wants more than 3 years. Hextall shouldn't have a problem with giving 4 years because of the commitment they made to Letang, but at the same time, Malkin also shouldn't refuse to take less than a 4 year deal when he's 36 and coming off of 2 poor injury prone years.

3 years is a perfectly appropriate amount, get the money to work with that term.

I'm going to be super shocked if they don't work something out in the next few days, tbh.

Pure conjecture on my part, but after he gave that quote about "Being a rich guy" I noticed at his end-of-season post-conference that he shouted out his agent. I felt like his agent called him after that and said "What the hell are you doing!?!?!"

If hes willing to sign at 6mil, give him the 4th year. Just make sure its either flat across the board or slightly back loaded so there is no cap penalties.

We don’t know numbers. If Malkin says yea I’ll sign for 5-6 just give me four years but Hextall want to above three for that number that’s on Hextall.

This is 100% accurate.

It's a fluid negotiation but the total new $ is the sticking point. Geno is looking for more in the $24M range and the team wants him more at $18-20.

It's pretty clear to me that this is the team's approach now that we gave Letang 3 bogey years to get him $36M.

Every rumour with Malkin is just noise from Malkin agent. I think he signs. 1 extra year isn’t going to be the difference, they’re just waiting to see who blinks.
