Off season time. New thread time apparently cause @Ugene Magic doesn’t like high page counts.

So how about them Malkin and Letang UFAs? Maybe we should sign one or both.

Geno thread. Keep Geno talk here:

Math is very talented and has skills you cant teach, it was gonna take some time fit into Sully's system. Your going to have lapse is actual D performance but his abilities make up for it. Its why I think we really need to find some toughness and stay at home guy for this D
he is just following the tanger model. just keep him on the 3rd pair and he'll be ok

It's wild. I hope he sorts his shit out, but I gotta imagine that dude's career is absolutely cooked.
I'm sure there are a lot of teams that think they can fix him and would take a gamble with a previous 2x Cup winning goalie who is still 28. The massive contract is the issue. Glad he got to cash in and even more glad it wasn't us who paid him. Still wish him the best, though, and hope he can find his game again.

I do not understand how there keeps being a market for Murray at this point.
I really don’t get the market for Matt Murray either. Insane injury issues, isn’t reliable at all with his consistency, but he now has a hefty tag with all of that.

I feel like there has to be a market of other goalies out there that are being considered and this was something Matt Murray’s agent planted Knowing his client is done in Ottawa too.

Not sure what the Sens are doing, but the term is what 2yrs? I think the Sens could leverage the term with salary retained for a very good sweetener.

Carter signed his extension literally over 5 months ago.

He signed his extension in January when he had 26 points in 36 games, after he had been holding down the 2C role with Malkin injured.

Yes. And it still should have been a 1 year deal.

I mean....was Carter really a flight risk to go to another team? He had previously told LA a few years ago that he would retire if traded. He made an exception last year for us. So did we think he was going to pack up again and go to an entirely new team? And even if that was a concern, we had until July 13th to extend him.

There's no good way to justify this. Trust me...I've tried.

The only way I could rationalize Carter's shitty performance in the second half & playoffs (or more specifically, my concern about him for TWO more years) is if we found out he played the second half with a broken testicle that hampered his play throughout that time but that he would fully heal to be back on his A game for the start of next season. I don't know if a broken testicle is actually a thing though, so I'm probably all out of excuses....

The real question is:

Do you think Jeff Carter is overpaid?

If you don't, then what's there really to complain about? Are you bothered that he got a contract before Malkin/Letang?

I really hope Hextall kicks tires on Colin White. Should come pretty cheap off a buyout and would probably look nice on Teddy/McGinn’s RW at the very least.

He’s got size and scored 41 points as a 21 year old on a shitty Ottawa team, so there’s some offensive upside. Wouldn’t be a bad option, could be like this year’s Heinen.

He’s from Boston and went to Boston College, so he already has Sully’s heart.

I think Jeff Carter is overpaid, and signed for too long. I would have been comfortable with a 1 year deal (with bonuses if necessary) with an AAV of about 2.25M.

I also wouldn't give a f**k if the cap wasn't flat. Carter could make $7M for all I care. It was just an odd move then, and even more odd now. Unless, you know, broken testicle and all that.

I think he got worn down due to his minutes over the last months of the season. It would be nice to have someone else they trust to take a face off to keep him away from the PK.

Again, Carter has literally no relevance to the Penguins signing Letang and Malkin. If the Penguins wouldn't have signed Carter, they would be paying another 3C basically the same amount of money.

Malkin and Letang haven't signed yet because the Penguins and them haven't come to an agreement yet. Nothing the Penguins have done in the last year has any relevance to the Malkin and Letang situation.

This just isnt true. You could have run TB as your 3rd line center and brought in a 4th line center. As a 4th line center TB wasn't that fare behind Carter in Even strength points per 60. TB also lot less Ozone starts than Carter.

You could also run Zohorna/DOC as your 4th line center and made it more of a scoring line while TB got the harder match ups. Then you could have upgraded during the season if needed.

The fact is they rushed the Carter signing because he is Hextall's guy.

Never mind nice, it's a downright necessity, which is kind of exactly the problem. If we're paying a guy > $3M, I'd prefer to not have to make excuses or babysit him.

I'm not saying play him 20 mins/game, but if he can't play 15 mins at a very high level consistently throughout a whole season, then we shouldn't have signed him. Unless the broken testicle rumour is actually true and will heal.

1 year, 2.25 is way underpaying for Jeff Carter as a 3C though. You must know that.

I can understand the 2nd year bugging you, but the AAV is pretty decent actually.

The AAV is not decent IF it comes at the expense of losing a guy like Rakell or someone else. So no, it's not just the second year of that deal -- what will be the opportunity cost of the first year of that deal THIS offseason? Might we lose Rakell or that extra $1M even being the difference on Geno?

Look at Corey Perry, then look at Jeff Carter. Corey Perry has outplayed Carter other than a stint of about 40 games at the start of this past season before Cartsy signed his deal.

So sure, he WAS worth $3.25M at THAT time, but what was the imperative of getting him signed at THAT time? As I said, he wasn't a flight risk.

Any why 2 years? No good answer for that last one, that's for sure. (Unless it was to bring an even higher AAV down lower, which is the only true explanation, and that makes the signing even more confounding)

He averaged 17:40 last year. If you look at game logs, he was around 20 mins while Malkin and/or Sid were out and closer to 15/16 mins when we actually had our top 2 centers in. If he could play the majority of the season closer to that 15/16 mins a night, I think (hope) we’d see a more consistent year out of him.

A lot of that goes on Sully, though. You gotta maybe think you shouldn’t run your 37 yo center into the ground by game 25.

Riley Nash or Tyler Bozak. Get us another right-handed center.
As you wish. Malkin out, Riley Nash in.

Ehh wait until Stasny signs for 2-2.5 this year with like the same numbers as Carter.

Whatever....stats, schmats. His new nickname is Broken Testicle Cartsy beause that's the only way I can have hope he'll live up to that contract.
