Off season time. New thread time apparently cause @Ugene Magic doesn’t like high page counts.

So how about them Malkin and Letang UFAs? Maybe we should sign one or both.

Geno thread. Keep Geno talk here:

So far, Hextall’s 2022 signings have been laughable.

Hopefully, that trend stops.

Well Hopefully we don't have a big dud let down free agent deadline this year... Just really don't know what Hextall and Burke have been told by these Fenway owners...

Yes. And it still should have been a 1 year deal.

I mean....was Carter really a flight risk to go to another team? He had previously told LA a few years ago that he would retire if traded. He made an exception last year for us. So did we think he was going to pack up again and go to an entirely new team? And even if that was a concern, we had until July 13th to extend him.

There's no good way to justify this. Trust me...I've tried.

The only way I could rationalize Carter's shitty performance in the second half & playoffs (or more specifically, my concern about him for TWO more years) is if we found out he played the second half with a broken testicle that hampered his play throughout that time but that he would fully heal to be back on his A game for the start of next season. I don't know if a broken testicle is actually a thing though, so I'm probably all out of excuses....
I agree with a lot of what you're saying here, but Carter should have exited stage left.

Hex should be fired for this one signing. I think new ownership have studied the fanbase and see them as rubes from smallville who don't understand trying to compete, that simply like shiny objects...........they may not be wrong.

It’s almost like Hextall was known for doing the bare minimum before we foolishly hired him.

I highly doubt FSG told tweedle dee and tweedle dum they had to re-sign DeSmith, or that they need to continue to tread water. Let’s be serious, they wouldn’t have acquired anyone in 2021 had the Pens not greatly overachieved. Sleepy admitted they forced his hand to acquire his honey boy Carter.

How do you buy this team and leave these two fools in charge? Why were they given that courtesy? These guys likely won’t get another management job once FSG wakes up.

You might be right, but I’m more hung up on these rumours of Carter playing with a broken testicle in the second half and playoffs. Lots of talk about this going around right now. Not sure how it started….

If CERN turning on the LHC really does punch a whole in the space time continuum, I hope we merge with a timeline where we resign both Letang and Malkin.

Not looking forward to the Mandela Effect of "does anyone remember us resigning Malkin to $7.1mil x 3yr deal?"

He averaged 17:40 last year. If you look at game logs, he was around 20 mins while Malkin and/or Sid were out and closer to 15/16 mins when we actually had our top 2 centers in. If he could play the majority of the season closer to that 15/16 mins a night, I think (hope) we’d see a more consistent year out of him.

A lot of that goes on Sully, though. You gotta maybe think you shouldn’t run your 37 yo center into the ground by game 25.

If the problem with Carter is that he can't take the top 6 stand-in minutes a 3C usually takes when there's injuries, why did we bring him back to be 3C? Why was he 3C to begin with? Everyone knew 3C was going to have to see a lot of top 6 time last year and assuming we bring back Geno, it's a safe bet there'll be another 20 next season too.

Hextall is a stickler for 2 things: deals with old friends and stingy contracts. At 3M AAV who cares that the deal is multi-year, immovable, and kicks in when Carter is already 37 years old? Hextall is saving the Penguins 500k or something!

I think it's an open question if we even tender Kap. I'd probably not tender him an offer and see if you can sign him for half price. That's assuming we don't trade him, anyway.

His qualifying offer is $840,000. The league minimum is $750,000. If you don't tender him he hits UFA and is for sure gone. If you do tender him they risk going to arbitration and being stuck with a higher cap hit than they want.

July 11th is the final date for QOs, so we'll know fairly soon what they do.

But very unlikely to get under 3m in arbitration.
