Off season time. New thread time apparently cause @Ugene Magic doesn’t like high page counts.

So how about them Malkin and Letang UFAs? Maybe we should sign one or both.

Geno thread. Keep Geno talk here:

Wait, Kap's salary is 3.2 million. How is his QO $840K? I thought I understood this nonsense, but clearly I don't.

QOs are based off of base salary for the last year, and since Kapanen's salary for the last year was a) lower than his cap hit b) mostly signing bonus rather than base salary, that gives a base salary of 800k for his last year.

Kapanen is not an RFA we should go to arbitration with. He'll get awarded something around 3 million and at that point we can't walk away. We are f***ed unless Hextall trades him now.

Well, we'd be pretty dumb not to qualify him then.

Or we don't qualify him and he ends up signing here again. But yeah.

Thanks dude. I feel like I'm kind of stuck 2 CBAs behind on the cap rules sometimes.

Once Kapanen is given his QO, he will sign it and then request arbitration. When people say half price they mean half of what they think the arbitration reward will be, most think it will be around 3 mil.

So that's the risk, if the Pens give him the QO, then they risk him having to pay him 3mil next season. So, they are hoping if we don't QO him then he will just come running back for half price. Which I don't see at all. If the Pens don't give him the QO then he will be a UFA. And he will get at least 3 mil on the open market.

A team like Detroit or Buffalo or NJ or Arizona that has a ton of money will easily sign him to a 1-2 year deal for that money. So if the Pens don't want to sign him for around 3 mil, then they should trade him for whatever they can get, because he will not be signing for 1.5mil in a world where Nick Paul gets 3.1mil on a 7 year deal.

Except then he has arbitration rights and I don't know if the team wants to chance that he'll get an award around his current salary.

Honestly, I'd just trade him for a guy with similar issues who might work better, but I wouldn't really lose any sleep if he left.

But once you qualify him he can take us to arbitration and we can only walk away if it's over 4.5m, which it won't be, but it will be fairly high - I'd feel pretty confident about 3.something - so we're landed with that price or trading him away.

Tbh I'd rather keep Kapanen all things being equal, even at an arbitration contract, but there's more important holes to fill and saying bye is an easy way to get money for them. I think they should only extend him if they're super confident of being able to trade out of Zucker and Petterson.

Yeah, like we were saying last night, Kapenen is fine but probably needs to be on the 3rd line and not playing with whoever the 2C is until he can prove that he's not screwing up shift after shift. He's got the physical tools to do okay here. But that's a big hypothetical.

Sure, but we would still be pretty dumb not to qualify him.

Qualify him and shop him... or extend him. He has some value from his pedigree alone. I would not let an asset with some value walk for free. That's bad asset management.

Incidentally, can you trade a player awaiting arbitration? I thought there was some weirdness about that.

Anyhow, draft day tomorrow, here's hoping we trade Zucker for a 2nd or something and it all becomes a moot point!
I thought draft started Friday. Thanks for the heads up. Thursday night seems odd, but I'm sure ESPN wants that Friday prime time spot for a real sport like cornhole.

I believe you can't trade a player awaiting arbitration, although I think you can walk out of the room and send a trade in.

You can of course trade a player who has yet to be qualified, which is what I would probably do at this juncture. And given how obvious this is, if we reach the 11th and Kapanen is neither traded or qualified, I'd assume he didn't have value.

1st round is tomorrow, 2-7 are Friday, I believe.

Gonna milk my last two days of quarantine and just watch draft coverage.

Some younger cup contender is going to offer ZAR more to be their Craig Adams. That's the best case scenario for everyone.
Inshallah.

Guys like ZAR and Adams are just 'safe.' Coaches loooove that so much in the short term that they end up playing 3rd line minutes ahead of real talent or youth. That talent would be fun to watch as a fan and that youth could develop, but both will make mistakes so we get Zach Adams-Glass 15 minutes a night instead.

I think it's an open question if we even tender Kap. I'd probably not tender him an offer and see if you can sign him for half price. That's assuming we don't trade him, anyway.

Yup. I wouldn't give Kap much more than what we could bury him in the minors for. So $1.5M MAX, but that's only if we have the room, which we shouldn't if we build our roster correctly, and it should be Puustinen instead.

Old news? Non-news?

If it's for 3 years than everything we've heard indicates that would be the team preference, not Letang. Given that, it seems FAR more likely that the AAV will start with 8 and not 7.

im already planning to be disappointed in Hextall’s draft day lack of action…he better trade a player off our roster at LD at least, but I’m preparing that he’s simply going to make a first round pick lol…also, if we don’t hear about a Letang and Malkin signing by tomorrow I’ll burst…

I think Pagnotta proved he's the most reliable source when he called the DeSmith signing a few days ago, and he said Letang will be coming around the $7 million to $8 million range. If it does end up a 3 years deal, which I'm thinking is a mistake by Hextall (should be longer to keep the cap hit down), I'm thinking it will be $8 million AAV, maybe even a bit higher. I want Hextall to give him 4 years to get the AAV into the 7s.

I'm hoping the Letang contract get sorted out today. I want the team to have some extra clarity going into the draft so they know what they have to do with regards to the cap.
