Off season time. New thread time apparently cause @Ugene Magic doesn’t like high page counts.

So how about them Malkin and Letang UFAs? Maybe we should sign one or both.

Geno thread. Keep Geno talk here:

Isn't that what Colorado just did after losing 3 straight years in the 2nd round?

They stayed the course? First of all, inserting first-round draft picks into their lineup must be nice. We cannot do that, mainly because we have not had many. And then there is Mike Sullivan.

They brought in Lehkonen and Manson, great pickups both. Helm and Cogliano were perfect complements for their fourth line. Kuemper instead of Grubauer. Jack Johnson and Ryan Murray for depth on defense and MacDermid for toughness. Jost for Sturm.

Not exactly staying the course. We literally have been doing less than this. Far less. Despite not winning a round since god knows when.

Is anyone saying “doing nothing is fine?”

seems like there’s a world of difference between that and “we were really close to having a deep run with a couple of tweaks and better luck.”
I also think there's a complete lack of acknowledging just how abnormally dominant Sid and Jake were against the Rangers, and how much their play covered up team flaws. Those two played better and had more points than they have, combined, since 2018. I don't know if they're gonna hit that level again.

If those two play like they have against the Isles in 2019, the Habs in 2020, or the Isles in 2021, and the team's toast.

Not sure why all the doom and gloom. I’m hearing from my people that the Penguins still want to win the cup and they like their team.

You're listing guys who didn't even play in the playoffs, and Kuemper who sucked. The Penguins added Rakell, Heinen, McGinn, and Boyle from the previous playoffs. The Avalanche also were forced to look for new players since they lost Saad due to the cap.

The thing that really sucks is that JR's mark is still being felt by the roster makeup. You got guys like Petts and Marino with bloated contracts, Zucker with his awful contract, the assets lost in tunnelvisioning two 3rd liners in Zucker and Kap, etc.

An extra like $5 million having not wasted it on those guys and you can take a real run at someone like Forsberg, instead of bullshit media speak about wanting to chase Cups without actually being able to do anything to change up the roster to a significant degree, if the team even really wants to.

I'm going to be really irritated if Hextall gives Letang 3 years and it causes the AAV to be ridiculous. The Penguins need Letang and Malkin to come in as cheap as they can. Forcing them to take 3 years isn't how you do that.

You are a worse team now and in the future with Letang at $8.5 million for 3 years instead of $7.5 million for 4 years.

I agree, but it doesn't have to be this way. We don't HAVE to have such a sleepy GM.
It takes a long time to swap out the amount of problems this team has, and it takes two teams for trades to work. They should've been working on this kinda thing multiple seasons now. I don't think there's any desire to, tbh, from ownership or the FO.

In short; The fanbase probably has more of an appetite for change/improvement than the organization. I think that's pretty clear by now.

Yeah but now... hey... look... just... hold on a second, there. Have you considered that he just needs a LITTLE more time here and that he's actually WAY better than you think? Now I know what you're thinking "this guy has had years of miserable results" but allow me to show you these charts and heatmaps that explain to you why you are so stupid and wrong.

His desire-to-play-but-can’t-bc-of-core-injury per 60 levels are above average. That’s why I don’t mind if we keep him. I mean compare them to Jason Blake’s numbers from 2003 (if you haven’t already) notice a pattern…? Exactly. Now remember Dallas has a fairly new coach and they want to add to their strong locker room and not retract from it (they lost Raduov and probably Klingberg too) you will start to see how a Zucker trade makes a lot of sense and I will be absolutely 100% shocked if Dallas doesn’t at least consider it.

Hockeybuzz is ridiculous, no way the Pens are trading up to get Logan Cooley... that trade does not even make any sense..

You can criticize Hextall for being too passive as a GM, but the Penguins have also done better in the playoffs in the last 2 years than they did in the last 2 years with GMJR :dunno:

In JR's last 2 years, the Penguins were downright embarrassed in the playoffs while they had multiple bad players due to JR wheeling and dealing. They threw out players like Johnson, Gudbranson, Wilson, Bjugstad, a corpse of Marleau and such because JR just wanted to make trades for the sake of trading. A lot of those trades resulted in the Penguins bringing in a lot of bad players. With Hextall, he hasn't really brought in any bad players. He's been much quieter, but that also causes him to have much fewer misses than JR had. Hextall's been quietly effective, while JR was just shooting from the hip and doing bad trade after bad trade at the end of his time here.

I don't agree this is "JR's team", because if this was "JR's team", half the roster would have been traded in the last 2 years.

Exactly. The Jason Blake point is a good one. Not to mention Erik Cole amirite?

Plus if you take all of Zucker's points here from the last three seasons and mash them all together and make them ONE number... that number is WAY bigger. I just don't think people understand the game sometimes and what constitutes a top six player SMH

This is definitely still JR's team, imo. The only notable changes since his departure have been the additions of Carter and Rakell, the latter of which may not even be back. /shrug

I'm not one of the people trying to crucify Hextall. I think the lack of moves is more on ownership than the FO, tbh. But I do think Hextall's the wrong guy if the goal is to genuinely improve and compete for Cups before Sid hangs 'em up. Previous ownership was forced to hire somebody because JR's a f***ing petulant child, and they chose to hire a guy who would be in charge of the dismantling/rebuild of the team a few years too early as opposed to hiring another GM to play run and gun from the GM chair just to fire them when the era played itself to a close in the next few years.

Why are we comparing the 2021-22 Avalanche with the 2021-22 Penguins anyway???

Compare the '21-22 Avs with the '16-17 Pens if you want. Otherwise, it is useless.

But if you think we are a couple of lucky bounces away...more power to you.
