Off season time. New thread time apparently cause @Ugene Magic doesn’t like high page counts.

So how about them Malkin and Letang UFAs? Maybe we should sign one or both.

Geno thread. Keep Geno talk here:

The entire goal shouldn't be simply re-signing Geno and Letang and icing the same roster, more or less, that's failed to get out of the 1st round for a handful of years consecutively. It should be dramatically improving on that team if they want to have any realistic hope of competing with the league's best anymore.

But that requires a whole lotta shifting around of players and I don't think the FO or ownership really, genuinely give a f*** enough to do that. So they'll bring back the same roster, shrug and blame some random factor for yet another 1st round exit next spring.

Maybe it's a bit of nostalgia on my part but I agree. Loved the name and logo, too.

Miss the Nordiques, too. They were kind of a nothing team but the logo was 70s gold and combined with the name they always just seemed so... foreign as a kid.

Yup all the defunct logos were the shit when I was growing up:

Whalers
Nordiques
North Stars

And even if they couldn't, they could have added on top of him to get rid of him. Or they could have even waited a year and tried to get rid of him with one fewer year left on his deal.

I know it's pure hindsight, but it just stinks that they didn't accomplish anything after getting rid of JJ and are still dealing with the consequences of buying him out.

I realize that this is still somehow a controversial opinion sometimes but they DID accomplish something... they took him away from Sullivan. Who, for all his good qualities as a coach, could not seem to find a way to place him in the lineup to mitigate his weaknesses. And in fact sometimes even seemed to double down on overuse.

But I do wonder what could have been done as opposed to a buyout. Which has hurt.

As I said in another thread: let's get the same exact band back together that's done jack all the past half decade.

Brilliant strategy!

DK's just essentially retweeting the same rumor that's been floating around the past 18 or so hours of a Letang deal being "imminent" but he can't simply retweet, so he has to word vomit some crap to make it look like he's got sources close to the FO/team.

I take DeSmith at 1.8 mil over a Fleury type at 3 mil+ all day.
Considering our goaltending woes in each of the last two post seasons I wouldn't. Probably the biggest reason we didn't get out of round one. Not a huge MAF guy by any means but CDS is very unremarkable. And he's been hurt when it mattered most both times, no thanks!

I think i am going to start a rumor twitter and just parrot friedman and Lebrun and when I get enough of a following start a website and make some semi passive income. I will market heavily towards 18-25 year old kids in Toronto

lol just make every single desirable FA's destination Toronto and every single terrible Toronto player a surefire trade candidate (that will also paradoxically reap huge returns) and you'll clean up.

If you bash Malkin for being Injury prone then DeSmith should be as well. The guy has not been healthy when you need him for two years in a row.
Yep, and this team is plagued by injuries year in and year out, so what do we do? we bring back one such guy and likely another. #DontbringbackGeno

Eklund kind of does this already but maybe there’s room for one more

Uh, okay?

Yeah, Miller may not want to sign an extension right now and may want to cash out in UFA. But Miller coming with an extension is hardly this pie in the sky scenario and you see it happen all of the time with that caliber of player. Seth Jones last year and Mark Stone a few years ago are just a few examples off the top of my head.

It's not a "make believe fantasy world" to imagine that the Penguins could be trading for Miller as he's coming with an $8 million AAV long term extension, because it's the same thing the Hawks did last year with Seth Jones. Of all of the things to criticize the "replace Malkin with Miller" idea for, that one is a really odd one.
Let's say that's a possibility though I think $8 million per year is probably less than he'll get on his next contract, what would Vancouver realistically want from Pittsburgh that doesn't hurt the Penguins now? I'd love to dream big but I'm a realist, a.k.a. negative as ****.

For anyone questioning the Lord of Coaching, Mike Sullivan. I'll point to the Mtl series where he gave JJ and Schultz GOBS of ice time.

But for some reason that wasn't Sullivan's fault either or something something Covid

Exactly. If you are not the prototype in goal by today's standards, you better be either GREAT or durable.

DeSmith is neither.

this thing about Letang taking a 3 year deal makes zero sense. Three years means higher AAV, for a specimen like Tanger, who you know is not bad bet to play 4-5 more years and get him under lower AAV. And why would he take that unless its $9.5M for 3 years. That would mean buy buy Geno and buy buy any solid replacement at 2C. Thats crap. If Tanger takes 3x8 I would be really shocked

There seems to be infinite amounts of room for trash journalism these days so I say why not.

I wouldn't even feel bad about it. People these days seem to downright enjoy hemorrhaging money for a good grift.

It depends what Letang values.

He sure could get more money elsewhere, that's a given.

The only places I see him go are Montreal and Ottawa, both for family reasons. Ottawa won't try and Montreal, if they are any smart, should not.

From what I understand, Letang's family lives in Montreal year-round (at least, they did back in 2019). They travel back and forth to see him during the season. His son is around 9 and his daughter 3. If they decided to keep them in the Quebec education system, I doubt that Krissy will entertain moving out of the Northeast.

My thinking here is that he values these things above maximizing his income:

- Family
- Staying with Sid (and Geno, but mostly Sid)

That leads me to believe that he might go for 24/3.

Good call. To establish trust my first tweet needs to go viral. I either need to prove I have legit sources or say something really dumb. I feel like Nathan Fielder rn
