Off season time. New thread time apparently cause @Ugene Magic doesn’t like high page counts.

So how about them Malkin and Letang UFAs? Maybe we should sign one or both.

Geno thread. Keep Geno talk here:

What did you think of the RR acquisition at TDL, and the Rust and Letang signings? Why notwait until thursday or friday to panic?
Your deadlines to panic keep getting pushed out further the more you post. It’ll be Give Hextall until the end of the summer by Friday.

Steel’s even solid on faceoffs for a young guy- 50.5% career.

Has produced everywhere, except NHL.

You need to calm down, it will all get done, and then you'll need to embrace Hextall. It will be absolutely glorious. And you and the majority here will have egg on your face. And I will stand triumphant!

It’s already dragged on for far too long.

The plan to penny pinch was for trocheck? Lol. Sign kadri, you have no wings. Sign trocheck, you downgraded. So what’s the play?

I think their plan is probably to sign Trocheck for around the same money they were offering Malkin and then trying to splurge on 2 top-6 wingers in free agency.

The issue is signing 3 big names in UFA is almost unheard of from any team.

I'm sorrydid free agency start yet?

According to who? Maybe you're the problem? IN fact I believe that to be the case. You come across as a very self important individual.

You dick around someone like Casey DeSmith this close to the beginning of free agency, not Malkin.
If you're right and they are ''dicking'' him around I guess he won't sign here. if I'm right he will. Let's see what happens, aight?

I don't think there really was a plan, tbh. You'd have had to already been in the process of shaving down the expense on depth guys like Zucker, Petts, and even probably Dumo--since injuries seem to have cratered his play.

At best, the team was always going to look very similar to the one we've seen for years. At worst, the team ends up with like Trocheck or Strome as the 2C. Either way, they're probably still a playoff team, albeit 1st round exit.

Also if Malkin leaves, I think you almost have to split up Guentzel and Crosby so Guentzel can carry the 2nd line. If you can keep Rakell, I'm not worried about a top line of Rakell-Crosby-Rust, but you're going to need to seriously beef up the 2nd line with Malkin gone.

I think if you put a good winger with size on RW with Guentzel and Trocheck, that should be a very good 2nd line. Would someone like Niederreiter fit that mold?

Who has been the GM for the past two years refusing to make any changes beyond a deadline pick up???

Hextall and Burke aren't stupid here. They told all involved cap would limit the offers. Letang lowered his AAV but got a little more money. Rust was a deal that no one had him signing here. Malkin knew any offer would be lower than he wanted and maybe he was surprised with the initial offer. But if Pens did offer 6 AAV for 4 years and Malkin believes that is not good enough, so be it. The days of prior years Pens management and GMJR doing no negotiation deals and guys getting paid more than production is over. Hextall is actually negotiating with players and that somehow is not the way to go. In fact it is.

We want the other Ondrej, Peat.

You want the other Ondrej. I just want to see the world burn.

More seriously, I want this team to take some gambles on guys who could have some high peaks left ahead of them. They probably won't pay off but they're the sort of gambles that can really change the outlook with a streak of luck. Kase was tracking into being a serious player before the concussions happened, and last year in Toronto he had pretty good stats considering he as utterly buried. If you can get the player he as in Anaheim, which seems feasible given last year, he'd be a definite plus player with possibly more and his cost presumably is about half hat the other Ondrej could cost.

I don't think there's room for him and Kappy so that's a pipe dream, but otherwise it makes sense to me.

Again Malkin + trocheck + wing.. ok
Trocheck plus two wings = downgrade.

I honestly don’t think Ron has a plan. Except to be cheap as ****. Hoping to wake up tomorrow and this was just a nightmare.

I’ve appreciated the calm as opposed to JR. but this is next level.

Hextall caved and gave Malkin what he asked for, but Malkin still said no because he was mad it took too long.

That's not Hextall being cheap.

I just really hope the Penguins don't wait on Malkin to make a decision on his plans for next year. Make a final offer sometime in the next few days that is the absolute max you can do (I'd imagine it's something like $6.5 million a year for 4 years), and say "this is your offer to come back, but if you don't accept it by July 14th, we're pulling it".

They can't afford to miss out on Kadri or Trocheck because they're waiting on Malkin.

I agree with this. I don't want another situation like they had when they waited for Hossa to make his decision and ended up with Satan and Fedotenko (even though that kinda worked out?).

It'll suck to see him go, but you can't wait around for him to make a decision. Especially when it seems like this has more to do with hurt feelings than not receiving a fair offer.

The issue to take with Hextall/ownership is that the team's still largely unchanged, Geno or no Geno, and that's not a good enough team anymore.

The issue to take with Geno is that he's coming across as a prima donna. The team relented and matched his requirement, but now he's too offended to accept? f*** outta here, dork.

Hope Sid bills him for the flight down to the shithole that is Florida. Assuming it's even true that he made the trip, which I'm extremely skeptical about.

Eh. Hextall has really pressed those guys. Him making a final movement at the end doesn't absolve him from the idea that he's cheap or however you want to put it.

That said, I think the plan is clear. Assemble the best second line he can, and if it's more like league average than it was, lean harder on team structure and less on individual talent that we've done so.

It’s hextal being a dip. It’s part of his job to recognize genos legacy in Pittsburgh and to dial his number the same time he does Letangs.

Hextall didn't re-sign Letang because of legacy. He re-signed him because he's the linchpin of the blueline and is a still top-10 defenseman in the entire league.
